Canon 4344B023AA overview

  • 1Description

Canon's PowerShot SX30 IS Digital Camera raises the bar for optical zoom lenses--way, way up. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a 35x, 24-840mm equivalent, zoom lens, taking you from a true wide-angle to an ultra telephoto suitable for wildlife and sports photography and, who knows, maybe even pictures of the stars (just kidding about the astronomy pix, kids). And it comes with Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer so you'll be able to capture great shots even at super telephoto focal lengths without unseemly camera shake. A Zoom Framing Assist makes it easy to follow a moving subject, even using the super telephoto.

The lens uses a double-sided aspherical glass-molded lens, an ultra-high refraction index lens, enhanced negative refractive power, and UD glass to correct wide-angle distortion and suppress chromatic aberration. With 14.1MP, you'll get high resolution pictures, whether you're shooting landscapes, pictures of the kids, or those 2 blue herons on the other side of the lake.

The high resolution 2.7" Vari-Angle display screen makes it easy to frame and playback your photos and video--that's right, you also get gorgeous 720p HD video, which can be shot using image stabilization and full zoom, with stereo sound. There's also Advanced Smart AUTO, which recognizes and sets optimal settings for 23 pre-defined shooting situations. Canon's proprietary DIGIC 4 Image Processor delivers faster, more accurate noise reduction for better image quality, even at high ISO ratings. This little beauty is ready to go out and play.

35x Wide-Angle Zoom Lens
Canon's first high-powered 35x Wide-Angle Optical Zoom (24-840mm equivalent in 35mm) with Optical Image Stabilizer reduces camera shake to achieve amazing images whether you are up close or far away. Using the new Zoom Framing Assist button aids the user in tracking and capturing subjects during super telephoto photography.

    Canon 4344B023AA reviews

PowerShot SX30 IS Digital Camera is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 297.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great P&S for all around photography. I have owned this camera for about three months now and really love it. The HD720 video is amazing. To view some video I have taken go to Youtube look up Ed6768. My most recent video is of an American Kestrel eating a small bird, also I took video of the Lunar Eclipse. The camera did a great job. For those people whom expect DSLR performance from a P&S, get over it this is a P&S. You want great Birding pictures then buy a 500mm or larger lens for your DSLR. If your OK' with good image quality ( ie: Not looking to get published.) then this camera does that perfectly. I love the camera for the purposes I use it for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant Zoom! Me being a novice when it comes to photography, this is a brilliant camera for experimenting BEFORE upgrading to a SLR or even as a second camera if you already have an SLR. It's compact, lightweigh with vast functionality. The Zoom range is brilliant. I wanted a camera that I could use indoors without any issues as well as outdoor shots without the need to carry around lots of different lens. Recently went to a concert where I was able to take close-up shots of the artist on stage despite not being very close. Was also able to take self-portraits as the flip-out LCD screen can flip 180 degrees. Brilliant, fairly priced camera!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed. The new SX30IS has a stylish design, has a powerful zoom lens wich has the best of both worlds, wide and telephoto. New lithium battery is a plus. Brighter and bigger LCD than previous models (I own a SX10IS). But sadly image quality is poor. Images lack of sharpness and sensor produces high resolution noisy pictures at normal sharpness setting. I had to work at custom color mode and set sharpness at -1 to get acceptable noise level,at the cost of less sharpness. Video is where this camera performs better. Images are clear even at low light conditions. It seems this camera sensor was designed primarily for video, than for stills.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent in its class Camera manufactures continue to improve their product. Shutter lag has been significantly improved and the start-up time is almost as fast as my SLR. The white balance and color is excellent and the lens is surprisingly sharp for an extreme zoom. The digic 4 processor appears to do a good job of reducing noise. Past P&S's over exposed the image and required an exposure comp. of -1/3 to -2/3. But the SX30 IS has great exposures at 0 comp. Image quality will not compete with my 5D but when it comes to size, weight and ease of use and still gives you good image quality when hiking and backpacking with its extreme zoom range, well, it's a dream come true.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A lot of camera for the $$$. Recommended to me by a professional Hollywood photographer. It suits my needs because of the multi functions and ease of understanding how to maximize the varied operations available. The unheard-of range of the lens at 25 to 800+ mm is fantastic. The internal stabilization eliminates the shake inherent in action shots using full optical magnification. It is great for getting close up when shooting wildlife. I have already demonstrated it to a friend who has, since purchased the camera. It ranks high on my list of previously-owned cameras whose lens alone, cost more than this entire single lens camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's Good It's a good prosumer cam. I bought it during the Winter 2010 sale from B&H. After watching several reviews on Youtube, I decided to buy this one. At first, I wanted to buy a DSLR. But, the budget was a little shorter. So, this was the next best thing I can get. The performance is moderate, the zoom is awesome. Still having some trouble to use it in full manual mode. The pictures are great on sunny days. But it has some issues with night outdoor photography. I don't suggest you to buy this if you are looking for DSLR type performance. The point is, it is the next best thing to a DSLR, but it's NOT a DSLR even though it looks like one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The rear dial is a good surprise for me The 35x superzoom is great for photos, but requires a certain firmness in their hands, even with IS. This camera is very light. What caught my attention was the handy rear dial such as exist in my professional Canon 50D (and others: 40D, 60D) for fast adjustment of aperture, shutter speed, stops etc. The hot shoe for the flash comes with an interesting removable rubber cap (yes, it's made by rubber, but seems solid plastic) and has a small leather bag in the box to insert this, attaching in the the camera strap provided. Don't miss this very small leather bag, and attach it soon to your strap! :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile, when outgrowing pocket cams I saw the NY Times review and had my doubts as their review described the camera as having only average picture quality. Also a knock on the cam was that it doesn't save pictures in RAW format. My wife was ready to step up from a pocket camera, and wanted a long zoom for photos of wildlife. Folks using this camera will most likely not bother with RAW editing, anyway, and the picture quality is just fine for the vast majority of situations. The zoom on this camera is the selling point, and boy, it should sell. A big step up from point-and-shoots, but easy to use and not something a casual user will soon outgrow as skills improve.
