LaCie Quadra overview

  • 1Description

The 3TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0 is a cross-platform, high-capacity, high-performance external drive, well-suited to handle the backup and storage demands of creative professionals. Designed to work with either your Windows or Mac computer, this drive features a large capacity of 3TB, a 7200rpm disk speed, 32MB of onboard cache, and an impressive mix of three different interfaces. It has a blazing fast USB 3.0 port, an eSATA 3Gbps port, and two FireWire 800 ports.

Although Mac OS X typically doesn't support USB 3.0 connections, LaCie has created a driver that allows you to use this interface with your Mac (also requires a LaCie USB 3.0 card for your computer). Also with regard to Mac computers, the two FireWire 800 ports allow you to daisy-chain the drive. With the drive, you can transfer data at up to 130MB/s via USB 3.0, 115MB/s via eSATA, and 85MB/s via FireWire 800.

The drive also features a heat-sink design for heat dissipation as well as a programmable eco-management mode. It comes with Genie Backup Assistant and Intego Backup Assistant software for backing up your data and restoring any data that you might have accidentally deleted. Whether you stack it with other d2 Quadra drives, mount it in a rack, or stand it upright, this drive is a versatile, exceptional backup and storage solution for the consumer or creative professional.

Please note that Windows XP does not recognize volumes of more than 2TB.

The Professional Choice for Performance and Reliability

This drive is an excellent choice for creative professionals who need fast data transfer speeds and a large storage capacity. This drive features a 7200rpm disk speed as well as 3TB of storage. Plus, with the USB 3.0 interface, it can achieve data transfer speeds of up to 130MB/s
The drive can also transfer data at a fast rate of 115MB/s via the eSATA interface and 85MB/s via the FireWire 800 interface

The Professional Choice for Cross-Platform Applications

The d2 Quadra features a variety of interfaces that work with both Mac and Windows computers, including one USB 3.0 port, two FireWire 800 ports for daisy chaining, as well as an eSATA 3Gbps port. With all of its interfaces, the d2 Quadra has universal connectivity, so it is easy to back up and restore any workstation, no matter the configuration and interface
Thanks to LaCie's USB 3.0 driver for Mac OS, the USB 3.0 port is compatible on Mac computers
The USB 3.0 port is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and the FireWire 800 ports are backwards compatible with FireWire 400

The Professional Choice for Design

The unique, fanless aluminum heat sink design provides an increased surface area, keeping it quiet, safe, and free from dust inside
The drive can also stand upright, be stacked horizontally with other drives, or even be rackmounted to save desktop space
The drive is a superb solution for heavy storage users who want off-site backups and archives of any work environment
For superior energy efficiency, this drive also has a programmable eco mode, which automatically conserves energy if the drive is inactive for a certain period of time
This drive is recyclable and ROHS-compliant

The Professional Choice for Functional and User-Centric Features

With the preloaded LaCie Desktop Manager, you can easily configure the shortcut button to launch the application of your choice in one push and configure your drive's eco mode

    LaCie Quadra reviews

    3TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.1 Gen 1 is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 116.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Won't wake up, freezes programs in use I use this product to store all my photo and video media. I use Lightroom, Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. I wasted my money on 3 of these drives. They go to sleep even during tasks like outputting files and transcoding media, so when you come back to your computer, the program will be frozen and you will have to manually eject the LaCie disk and crash your program to get them back. I was assured in July of 2011 that the firmware to fix the problem would be out in 1 week... it has been 3 months and my brand new drives are killing the productivity I need to make a living.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 3TB LaCie d2 Quadra falls asleep I'm a long time LaCie user. I've been editing video professionally for many years. I own several 2TB d2 Quadras that have performed very well on the road for years. If necessary I can even edit directly to them without a problem. The 3TB drive is a nightmare. It goes to sleep and then will not wake up. It has locked up my entire system on many occasions. Calling LaCie for help was useless. I spent hours of my time trying to fix a new drive through their support. LaCie knows they shipped a bad batch of drives but does not want to bear the cost of fixing their mistake. Shame on them. Their final solution was for me to send in the drive at my expense and they would take a look. This is after I had to loaded data on the drive so I would need to but another drive to copy my files to. So how much money do they expect me to lose on this deal? When your in a small business you don't have the luxury of large capital budgets. You have to make your money count. You need a company that's going to stand behind their products. When I think of the amount of billable time I spent trying to fix a new drive it angers me. It still falls asleep if left on and still will lock up my system. Anyone who edits video knows that can cause a lot of problems. I have to use it as store of old files and only turn it on when I have to. I chalk this up as a learning experience and warn anyone considering buying this unit. Shame on LaCie for putting this on the backs of their customers.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A Longtime Lacie User I've used LaCie external hd drives in my photo business for performance and reliability. However, the 3TB LaCie d2 was a non-performer. The drive shut down completely after 30-40 minutes of use. This happened repeatedly while duplicating files from a another Lacie drive.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It goes to sleep and hard to wake it up I have many Lacie Hard drives and never had a problem, this one with USb 3 seems to have an eco mode that puts the drive to sleep after 30 min of not using - Now if u r working on a photo shop file it see u as not using the drive therefore goes to sleep. Saving a file would mean the rotating beach ball and a crash. the only way out is to unplug the drive - some times you lose the file and some times you dont . This drive not does not work for me and i need to look for another Brand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Rock of The Desktop This is my second 3TB d2 Quadra in as many years, and there's a reason... this HD rocks!!! La Cie might get some bad rap here and there, but what they do well is give a great value for a beautifully designed product - and it seems to always perform flawlessly for me. I would not hesitate to recommend this baby to anyone. thank you LaCie.I've got two of them running on my MacBook Pro 17 and they provide an island of security for me with Time Machine one one, and Carbon Copy Cloner ont eh other - cheap security knowing that i'm probably not going to be loosing any files anytime soon. har har har.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Off to a bad start I am having similar freezing issues as the other reviewers (Mac OSX 10.6.8). I have been in contact with LaCie support, and they say they will be releasing an update for these - hopefully that will fix the issue. For now, I am able to just turn off the drive when I don't need it so I'm keeping the drive, but it will be nice to have it fixed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Excited to get, but a let down PLEASE READ ENTIRE COMMENT: I have more than 15 Lacie external drives. They have all worked flawlessly, and I have been extremely please with each of them. HOWEVER, I do NOT recommend this USB3.0 version for Mac users. I had the same major issue with it over and over. I have returned it and purchased the USB2.0 version, which is working perfectly. If you read through the other comments on the B&H webiste, you will see many other users have this same issue. The drive will seem to work fine, but then when you computer goes to sleep and wakes up, the drive appears to be mounted, but you can not access it. I had to manually shut off the drive and restart it. Luckily, this did not cause any loss of files or data. This does not happen all of the time, but more often than not. I tried several fixes and it was not until I read the reviews, that I realized this issue was global and not due to my setup. I do NOT recommend this USB3.0 version for Mac users, but I do highly recommend the USB2.0 version. As always, B&H went above and beyond to help me return my item and get an appropriate one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable I am writing this review based on MANY previous La Cie d2 hard drives I have purchased over a decade. I am a professional photographer and go through hard drives like candy. I use and use up a lot of hard drives and have bought several from other manufacturers, and always buy a second hard drive of each type to use as a backup. I recently did an inventory of the myriad drives that I have and found that, while other manufacturers have a fairly high failure rate, only one of my La Cie drives has broken down... and that is over almost a decade and a half of use. In particular I like the d2 enclosures because they have a variety of ports. So, as Apple has changed its mind whether it wants to use firewire, USB or whatever they decide to switch to exclusively next year, I can still connect with all my d2s. I can find cheaper drives, but I will always pay more for reliability and connectivity.
