Sachtler Tandem Leg Tripod Overview

The CF 100 ENG HD 2CF two stage, heavy-duty tripod, provides maximum stability and carrying capacity. Constructed and drawn out of one-piece of carbon fiber material, it is twist resistant and lighter than dural aluminum. It features a 100mm / 4" bowl, tube diameter of 24mm (0.94") for extra stability, and is fitted with the Sachtler quick clamping system, so you can securely - and visibly - lock the tripod.

The CF 100 ENG HD 2CF's double extension provides greater stability, allowing an extended height range with a payload of 210 lb., and with a weight of only 9.5-lb it's lightweight, solid and stable. Spreader and feet are not included.

Sachtler Tandem Leg Tripod Reviews

Beasts

Two stage latches are not as fun as Speed Locks, but generally, not that much slower, unless you are always fully extending the legs for every shot. There a more solid than the non HD version. But also bigger and heavier. The non-HD version will have a tiny amount of flex with high drag heads, but these ones will generally be solid. Sachtler tripods are great, but very high priced.

Proper Sticks

The only reason not to use these sticks are if you can't afford them (which is a fine reason). But if you can, they are far more stable, sturdy, and easy to adjust than their single-leg counterparts. The legs slide down when unlocked without any pulling. Go ahead and spend the extra on the HD version (as opposed to the CF-100ENG 2CF). For a little extra, you get a lot more stability. These sticks are very light to carry for their weight rating, and collapse down to be quite short. I bought them because my Manfrotto 535 sticks were flexing too much during high-drag pans, and the feet would occasionally slip or the legs pop inwards. Windy conditions were out of the question. Those issues have been resolved by the Sachtler's spiked feet, mid-level spreader, and heavy build.

Sturdy and aesthetically pleasing

This is a product for serious film making. While filming for my first nature documentary on a DSLR (Canon EOS 1D Mark IV), I knew what I was missing. My heavy Canon EF 400mm f2.8 L IS USM lens weighing 5.3 kgs was giving jitters in other tripods and heads. With a payload of about 95kgs, this will work well with my future film camera (RED) and will last a long long time. I bought this to be used with an Oconnor 1030 HDs fluid head with 100mm bowl. It works like a charm. I know it would be tough to carry in treks. However, there is no escaping the weight if one wants to get rock steady stability. I don't lust after gear, however, I must admit that the tripod looks lovely.

Quality, Slightly Tough Setup

I purchased these legs in tandem with the Sachtler DV-10SB Fluid Head for use with a DSLR video rig. The legs are a bit overkill for my needs, but I know I can always through a larger 100mm head on these legs without issue. The only drawback I've experienced is the time it takes for setup. Perhaps I'm a bit clumsy, but I miss the convenience of my former Sachtler Speed Lock legs. Overall though, these are very high quality tripod legs - worth the investment.

Can this stay upright with just rubber feet, or do I also need to purchase a spreader?

You need a spreader. Also the rubber feet are not included. You need to buy them separately.

question

Whats the weight like? I'm currently using a Sachtler hotpod and was looking into a lighter weight tripod that I could travel with. How much weight difference is there with a hotpod versus this set of sticks with an 18s fluid head on it?
Asked by: Anonymous
The Sachtler CF-100ENG 2CF Carbon Fiber 2-Stage Tripod Legs weighs in at 5.3 lb. The Sachtler HOT-POD 10 Carbon Fiber Hot-Pod Tripod with Pneumatic Column weight in at 12.8 lb (5.8 kg). The weight difference with the same head would be 7.5lbs/3.4kg.
