Vivitar VIV-DKS-18 overview

  • 1Description

The DKS-18 small black Photo/SLR/Laptop Sling Backpack from Vivitar is a triple threat when it comes to buying this type of pack. It can be worn in three different ways and therefore serves as a durable pack for both transport and shooting. It's made from tough Oxford Fabric 600D.

When worn as a traditional backpack, it carries more than its weight in equipment including a 14" (35.6cm) laptop. When worn as a shoulder bag, you have rapid access to your gear through the zippered lower half of the bag. When used as either a left or right sided sling-style bag, the quick access zippered side pockets (on either side) give you even faster access to your equipment. An additional mesh storage pocket is supplied for small accessories.

The bag is essentially divided in half with the top being used for personals and smaller items in their own foam-padded compartment. The lower half is the main compartment where your gear is safely stored within additional foam-padded, adjustable dividers. There's an additional zippered mesh accessory compartment for batteries, media cards, cleaning cloths, pens or even business cards.

Carrying a tripod is no problem since the bag comes with connecting straps on the back that will hold your pod securely. This is a relatively lightweight pack that is functional, durable and flexible for the shooter who likes to be outside and constantly on the move. It's carried by two wide, padded and adjustable shoulder straps that are supported by an adjustable chest strap that helps keep the pack steady and centered on your back. The waist belt is also adjustable and helps prevent the pack from swaying while hiking or climbing. There's a comfortable back pad and easily removable and deployable rain cover for when the weather turns sour. Finally, if you're just trying to get the pack out of your car trunk, Vivitar has added a strong top carry handle.

Can be worn as a sling-style bag on either left or right side - accessory pockets on each side provide rapid access to equipment
Multiple versatile storage compartments - top and bottom halves separate personals and photo gear
Internal, adjustable foam-padded dividers
Accessory mesh side pockets for small items like batteries
Padded shoulder straps, chest strap and waist belt add stability
Rain cover provides additional protection from the elements

    DKS-18 Photo/SLR/Laptop Sling Backpack, Small (18 x 11.5 x 8", Black) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 108.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bag for small day trips to take pictures This backpack is great for taking your camera to the aquarium, zoo, or just walking around anywhere to take pictures. It fits my Canon Sl1 and several lenses and accessories in the bottom section and has room up top for sunglasses, phone, wallet, keys, etc., and a tripod strap and holder secure a tripod well. It also comes with a rain cover that is stored in the upper compartment. Also, there is a computer or tablet compartment on the back (closest to you) that fits my surface pro 4 safely. Overall, it is well built and protective. My favorite feature is the side pocket that the camera goes in so you don't have to completely remove the backpack from you to access your camera.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Get What You Pay For Great looking bag with great features and overall size. However, after about 5 days of use, little threads were starting to come out of random places all around the bag. The mesh pockets easy rip if you put anything more than a couple USB cables in them. Had I not gone to Europe for 2 weeks immediately after I bought this bag, I probably would have returned it within a week for poor construction but I got enough use out of it for what I paid. Getting one of the new Manfrotto sling bags when this finally falls apart completely. Also, not really a con per se but if you're using a larger camera or a DSLR with a battery pack grip it's a bit difficult to get the camera in and out of the side access pocket.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Almost broke my gear I am so incredibly frustrated with this bag, and I never write on these things. I had my bag for 2 months at most. I had 1 camera and 2 lenses along with my laptop. The straps both ripped, causing my equipment to hit the concrete. I am still having trouble with my computer... Not happy, If you do buy this bag, remember to put very little weight in it. Minus that MAJOR malfunction, I liked the arrangement of the bag and I wish it would have held up better for longer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect for the price I purchased this to use with my Canon DSLR T2i and currently carry that camera with an 18-135 zoom kit lens, a 50 mm prime lens, my 13 macbook pro, and all of the assorted chargers and cords. I have yet to fill it up, but plan to purchase up to 2 additional lenses that I'll also carry in this bag. It is comfortable, easily accessible, and was a fantastic bag for the price.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad quality I purchased this bag two months ago for carrying my camera and laptop everyday. However, the pocket and the zip are already broken.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Compact but roomy I like the versatility of this backpack/sling. It's compartments are snug without having poor accessibility - I like the three areas to gain quick access to your equipment. I also like that the design allows you to add personal belongings like the notebook and other items. I'll be travelling to London soon so this eliminates the need for me to take a large, cumbersome backpack that would prevent me from using for my camera gear (I haven't given 5 stars as it has not been in the trenches yet, so wear & tear and durability have to be confirmed) At this price-point for an amateur photographer, you can't go wrong.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GREAT BAG Absolutely great bag. I use it for a prosumer camcorder instead of dslr but it still works great. Fits ALL of my field equipment. Great pockets make me feel more organized than before. Only con would be this stitching. When I put ALL of my equipment in the bag it doesn't bulge but it gets heavy and that strain is starting to show in some of the stitching already 1 month in. Nothing that affects the stability of the bag but it's something I keep an eye out whenever I come back from the field. A simple sew job will fix any problems down the road. I highly recommended this bag for the obsessed prosumer!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good starting out This bag is good to start out with if you're a beginner in photography and don't have an enormous amount of equipment. I am a student and have been shooting for years and every class i have i get more equipment and little gadgets to improve in my photography, so far this bag is doing well in organizing and keeping my gear safe however theres not many small compartments where i can put extra batteries, memory cards, and cords, and other little things that i use like my filters. I have only been using it for two weeks, maybe i can find a way to organize and store my stuff but right now the bag is just doing well with my camera and the big gear. I would recommend buying it for temporary usage but not if you have a bunch of equipment.
