ASUS G74SX Overview

  • 1Description

The G74SX-A1 17.3" Laptop Computer from ASUS is a powerful 17.3" notebook computer, built to handle the intensive hardware demands that modern computer games place on a system. The computer's graphics engine is powered by the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M GPU, loaded with a staggering 3GB of GDDR5 video memory.

The computer is equipped with a Blu-ray drive. It is capable of playing HD movies from disc, either on the computer's 1080p display or an an HDTV via an HDMI connection. The drive can also read and write CDs and DVDs.

The system is powered by a 2GHz Intel i7-2630QM quad-core CPU which, coupled with the graphics card, can really push up frame rates in complex 3D video games. Thanks to Intel Turbo Boost Technology and the ASUS LevelUp function, you can overclock the system's CPU to up to 2.9GHz for enhanced performance.

Storage is handled by a dual hard drive system -- two 750GB 7200rpm disks, for a total storage capacity of 1.5TB. The computer boasts 12GB of RAM, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0+HS, and a 2MP webcam. A THX TruStudio sound system provides crisp and clear audio output for a true multimedia experience. Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) is the installed operating system.

Hail to the King!
The world of portable gaming has a new reigning king. The G74SX is a performance notebook that imposes its will with the combined power of a second generation Intel Core i7 CPU and nVIDIA GTX 560M GPU with 3GB of GDDR5 VRAM. A score of P2008 in 3DMark11 and P9180 in 3DMark Vantage makes this one of the fastest notebooks in the land. Support for DirectX 11 ensures that you'll not only have the one of the fastest rigs in town, but also the ability to play games as they were meant to be seen for a long time.
Stealth and Strength
Like its predecessor, the G74SX design was inspired by sharp polygonal shapes, but this time inspiration came from the US Navy's Sea Shadow stealth ship and modern day aircraft carriers. Like the stealth ship, opponents will never know what hit 'em, and like an aircraft carrier, the G74 has the firepower to shock and awe the competition.
3D Video Output and THX TruStudio Sound
The G74SX is great for gaming, but its hardware is serious business. It offers the one of the best 3D ecosystems for PCs, offering 3D content creation and editing. It's powered with nVIDIA 3D Vision, so games, photos and movies are all able to be enjoyed like never before. There's also the ability to output the G74SX to a 3D TV, so you can enjoy 3D entertainment from the living room. Pair that up with THX TruStudio and EAX 5.0 3D gaming audio technology, and together they make the G74 not only a great gaming notebook, but also a hub for multimedia entertainment.
Get Comfy
Gaming is something to be enjoyed, so why not be more comfortable for extended gaming sessions? Fatigue will be a thing of the past, thanks to the G74's 5° inclined keyboard, designed to provide a better ergonomic angle, as well as super comfortable rubber-like palm rests that are easy on the palm and wrist. There's also more space between the keyboard and number pad, so it more resembles a desktop keyboard.
Superior Ventilation
The harder you work, the more heat you generate. A computer is no different, and with the amount of power in the G74SX, some serious cooling is needed. A unique venting design pulls air from underneath the notebook, cooling the system down, then vents it through the rear, keeping hot air away from the user and reducing ambient noise for prolonged gaming.

    ASUS G74SX Reviews

G74SX-A1 17.3" Laptop Computer (Black) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from High on performance, low on price. I wanted a gaming laptop that could handle all of today's games without shelling top dollar for it. After some homework (and rave reviews of the G73 from my lecturer), the G74 was the best choice in terms of performance and price. Designed for games by gamers, the laptop packs enough hardware to handle any games you throw at it. I played Crysis 2 at the highest specifications and the G74 ran it like a charm. The rubber surface is comfy, the brushed aluminium surface around the keyboard is sleek, and the laptop is always cool with minimal noise from the fan. And on top of that, it only took B&H less than a week to get this across the Pacific to me in Australia.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Trading I realize this computer was designed for gaming but the last game I played on a computer was space invaders. I use this for my currency trading which requires superb graphics and excellent speed and reliability. Some charts are graphic intensive and this computer can handle it with no problem. Hard drive storage is over kill. The only downside is that the font size in certain applications is small but I understand that is due to the unbelievably high resolution.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome laptop I purchased this laptop to play demanding games and the computer keeps up with almost every game I install. I dont feel like I have to worry about changing the graphic settings around instead I max out all the options and it plays smoothly. I only have two complaints. The laptop is much heavier than I thought but I can deal with the size because the fan on the back does a great job to keep it cool. The speaker is much weaker than my previous HP but that can be easily fixed by connecting external speakers. Great laptop overall, I have no regrets!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High quality with a nice price I've been using my new Asus laptop for 3 weeks now and it can run all games with the maximun graphical settings. Games such as Battlefield 3 or Skyrim would run on maximun settings without problems. The computer has a nice and quiet ventilation system. You won't realize if it's on or not. The bad thing is how heavy it is... 4 kg is not something you can move easily but you have a nice backpack for free to solve this problem. Also I'm not so happy with the keyboard, I wouldn't say it was designed for gamers by gamers. If you play for a while, you would check it's not comfortable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ...powerfull machine ...It is a powerful machine. My biggest surprise has been how quiet it is considering the internal hardware.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product and great price I needed a laptop that has a lot of storage and a large display because I work with media and do not like iMacs. The laptop is configured for gamers and has a lot of great features to make gaming great fun. I purchased the laptop online. I received a call from B&H to confirm the purchase - I really appreciated that. The laptop was shipped in a timely fashion and well packaged.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excelent heavy choice The G74SX-A1 notebook by Asus is a powerhouse machine for heavy applications and games. Flight simulator softwares, like FS2004, FSX and X-Plane 9, for instance, run very gently, with high FPS. It is a heavy metal machine to replace your desktop and have some mobility. With it, you won't need to change or upgrade your laptop in the next five to six years.
