Canon 4426B008AA overview

  • 1Description

Spanning a flexible range of telephoto focal lengths, the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM is a Canon L-series lens characterized by its relatively compact size and versatility. Two ultra-low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for high clarity and color accuracy, and a Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast. Also, a floating elements mechanism is employed to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range for notable sharpness from 3.9' to infinity.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, this 70-300mm also features a four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. A ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism also afford quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed and has a protective fluorine coating on the exposed elements for use in trying environmental conditions.

Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 112-480mm equivalent focal length range.
Two ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. In addition to the single-shot standard IS mode, a second mode is also available that is optimized for panning.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Floating focus mechanism maintains consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, from 3.9' to infinity.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Optional rotating tripod collar is available and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

    Canon 4426B008AA reviews

EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 438.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Small but hazy If you really need a small and lightweight lens, this is probably the best one you'll find. The rapid focus, small size, and solid IS is nothing short of amazing. I've successfully taken some pictures handheld at night and bumping around in crowds. On the downside, the images are hazy. A large diameter unsharp-mask and black level adjustment are needed in post processing, which about doubles the noise level. Closing the aperture too much while zoomed in causes the front fresnel lens to appear in the photo. After a few years of light use, I've accumulated quite a bit of dust inside the lens. The internal electronics also needed to be replaced out of warranty.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small yet sharp and practical I have used this for newspaper concert coverage in very low light situations and for freelance work for winter sports and it has performed well even at 20 below zero. The size of the lense is an added plus while photographing concerts in varying light conditions. Not as sharp as fixed lenses, but for newspaper coverage and sports photography the quality of the images is excellent. A very useful lense. The autofocus has performed well for alpine ski racing in very harsh conditions. I have used a tripod with a 2 second delay for low light concert photography with very good results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent purchase I purchased this lens after some excellent reviews were published. This is as good as the reviews indicate. Extremely sharp wide open, incredible detail. I've hand held at 1/15 at 300mm an gotten fantastic results. I use this lens on my 50D and works flawlessly. It is odd that no tripod collar is included at this price point, but honestly don't know when one would really need it as good as the IS is. AF speed is really nice, I've gotten the best bird in flight photos yet. I can't wait unitl airshow season begins. Don't hesitate if this focal range is what you need, I don't believe there is an equal in this range.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Compact I needed a short and relatively light-weight lens that went out to 300mm. It had to fit in my regular camera bag. This lens was perfect. Originally purchased for a Rebel XT it worked great. Since then I've purchased a 5D mkII and, quite frankly, I'm going to let my wife keep this lens with the XT she inherited as the image isn't as sharp as my "L" series lenses and the lense is a bit sloe for concert photography. Saving my pennies for a 100-400mm or maybe even the 400 f4 prime. Nevetheless, this is a very goods lens on a 1.6x sensor. If you need compactness and light weight with a far reach on a 1.6, this is the way to go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent performance and value I have several other L Series lenses for myself, but got this one for my wife. The construction feels very sturdy, as one would expect for an L Series lens, but it is comparatively lightweight for the zoom it achieves. The autofocus is quiet, crisp, and generates very sharp images throughout its range. It is considerably more compact and lightweight than my 100-400. (When are they going to update the 100-400??) I like the locking feature to prevent slippage of the zoom mechanism on the 70-300 better than the tensioning ring system on the 100-400. It is a high quality, easy to use lens which produces very crisp images. What more could you want?

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Why did Canon make this Lens? Just had this lens for a week rental and sad to say, I don't know why it was made. Used it on my 5D Mark II. First I have the 70-200 F4 IS USM lens which is fantastic but I thought I would replace it with this lens. Well, it is not only heavier but why F5.6 @ 200-300? Comparing the two lenses,I found the 70-200 to be sharper at all focal distances and the colors slightly better but if one were to say that the new lens goes to 300mm, well just crop @ 200mm. Besides the above, the cost is as heavy as the lens. If you are going to go with a lens of this weight, get the F2.8. Sorry Canon because all my other equipment from you is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens This lens was a replacement for the non-L version of this same zoom lens. It's heavier, sturdier and has a much better IS function than the non-L lens. Focusing is quicker and much quieter also. I use this lens with a Canon 60D for wildlife/nature photography while on walks on trails. I don't carry a tripod and find handholding this lens to be easy. In low light situations I increase the ISO to maintain a shutter speed of 1/200 or greater and get great handheld shots. For me, the extra weight of the lens also helps stabilize the lens. My only complaint is the manual focus ring is too easy to turn and sometimes gets accidentaly moved when making zoom ring adjustments.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely LOVE this lens Over the years I have bought and sold more lenses than I can count...just ask my wife. This lens is one of the best, if not THE best lenses I have used. Talk about sharp...extraordinarily SHARP! And the color rendition is sensational. You can read that variable aperture zoom lens are not as sharp as prime or a fixed aperture lens like a f/2.8. That may be true for some other lenses, but not this one. It truly is a phenomenal lens. I use this on my Canon 5D Mark III and the results are terrific. Admittedly, I'm a bit of a pixel peeper and this lens just blows me away and holds up to Canon L-Series lens reputation.
