Canon 2746B006AA overview

  • 1Description

At the long end of Canon's L-series lens lineup, the EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM is a super telephoto prime distinguished by its impressive reach and advanced optical design. Utilizing two fluorite elements, one Super UD element, and one ultra-low dispersion element, chromatic aberrations and color fringing is virtually eliminated and imagery exhibits notable clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting in order to achieve greater contrast when working in backlit and harsh lighting conditions.

Beyond the optical attributes, the 800mm f/5.6 is also characterized by its advanced four stop-effective Image Stabilizer system, which has separate stabilization modes to suit various shooting applications. Also complementing handling is a sophisticated ring-type USM, which provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions and it has a rotating tripod collar to benefit working atop a tripod or monopod.

Super telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 1280mm equivalent focal length.
Relatively bright f/5.6 maximum aperture affords control over depth of field for isolating subjects and producing selective focus imagery.
Two fluorite elements, along with one Super Ultra-Low Dispersion element and one ultra-low dispersion element, are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. In addition to the single-shot standard IS mode, a second mode is also available that it optimized for panning.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
A Focus Preset function is available to quickly recall a programmed focusing position.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to three different ranges to suit different applications: 19.7-65.6', 19.7'-infinity, or 65.6'-infinity.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Fixed rotating tripod collar benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Canon 2746B006AA reviews

EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 58.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phenomenal I was a die hard Nikonian, but got sick of waiting for the back ordered 600mm f4 VR, with no answer about when it would ever be available. So, for about the same price, I bought this lens. I put it on a 50D body. I do not see the logic in using full frame format for super telephoto photography. It is fast, tack sharp, and everything I ever hoped it would be. The auto focus and IS work extremely well. I have used it on birds so far, from Herons to Hummingbirds, and already have my all time best photographs of each. It is heavy, and expensive, but lighter than the Canon 600mm f4. A Wimberly tripod head makes this a very useful instrument.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light weight, fast focus, razor sharp This lens has allowed me to get some incredible wildlife images that would have been nearly impossible to get without it. In the past I have used my 600mm (non IS) with a 1.4X to get similar images. The 800mm is nearly 3 1/2 lbs lighter than my 600mm and this makes a huge difference when hiking to where your subjects are. I usually use it on a Wimberley head with the pan and tilt knobs loose which allows the stabilizer to kick in. I have not tried to hand hold it given its large size and 9.9 lb weight. Perhaps Arnold could do this but not me. I have gone nuts using it since I bought it in October. In fact, my other lenses have been on vacation since then!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp but BIG I agree with everything others have said. I hoped this lens could replace my 500mm but not so sure. I find I need the 1.4 converter on the 500 most of the time but with this lens it's about right for birds with no converter. 1.4 makes it too long sometimes (good problem to have). Though it's only 1.4 lbs heavier it sure seems heavy and will be tough to pack very far. It can be hand held for short periods on a full frame body with no converter but with a 1.4 it's tough even with a monopod. IS works great but no better than the 500mm. This lens is best on a tripod with a gimbal head. Just as sharp and well built as the 500 but more reach.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens! I purchased this lens soon after it became available in the USA. I have been a Canon user for many years. My primary use is animal photos, usually from a rather large distance., and this lens is the best I have ever used. It's not for everyone, it's big and heavy and costly, but the performancy is fantastic! I highly recomend this lens if you need a lens of this length. Only suggestion to improve it would be changes to the tripod mount. The 1/4 " hole is way too far back, making the lens nose heavy, otherwise it's the best!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens but attracts people I use the lens for photographing sea ducks, hawks, buntings and shy birds. It is very sharp and the tripod-sensing image stabilizer helps while the lens is supported. A Lowepro pack, good tripod with Gambel-type head and the lens weighs 34 pounds. It is tiring to carry around for any great distance. Using a Canon 40D with it is a bad idea and unless the light is very bright the pictures come out blurry. This lens is a people magnet and strangers will stop to chat, stare or quickly leash their dogs and keep walking. It attracts a lot of unwanted attention - be prepared to expect anything from the general public.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely the BEST! This lens is a dream come true. I shoot wildlife, often at a distance, and this lens is amazing. The lens is sharp as a tack and, when mounted on a gimbal head, very easy to handle. Auto Focus is super fast and quiet. Used a 2X converter and had great results. My first extensive use of the lens was in Yellowstone and Grand Teton this past November. We hit all kinds of weather and the lens never disappointed. All in all I got some of the best photographs of my life. This lens puts you right there.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pricey, but worth every cent I am a wildlife photographer. I have been using a 500mm for years, with cropped sensor cameras, and with 1.4x and 2.0x converters. I never liked the results that I got with the 2.0x converters. But I need a really long telephoto. The wildlife I like to shoot (wolves, bears, eagles) behaves much more naturally when they feel completely alone. So, after years of arguing with myself, I finally convinced myself that buying the Canon 800mm was a good idea. And guess what, it is not only a good idea, it is a great idea. The feel of the lens is fantastic. It feels really stable, sturdy, but light. The autofocus is consistent, and super-fast. The images, even half a mile away, are really crisp. I can crop them by half, and still the resolution will be good enough for professional purposes. I have compared the same image, taken with a 500mm+1.4x, and with the 800mm. Big improvement. Definitely not cheap, but worth it...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from TOP OF THE LINE GLASS! The Canon 800mm that I recently purchased is everything that I hoped it to be, which is super sharp and a breeze to use with my Wimberley Gimbal head. Quality construction along with Canon's optimum glass makes this lens stand above any other lens that I have used! I shoot low ISO whenever possible so I shoot this often with wide open aperature that delivers tack sharp images! Awesome piece of glass! I shoot wildlife exclusively and coupled with a crop camera has powerful reach factor.
