Fujifilm EF-42 Flash stopped Firing - Don't buy it.

It was working fine, until it suddenly stopped firing the flash. It charges, the Test/Charge button lights up (you hear the sound it makes while charging), but the flash doesn't fire; both via the camera when it's in hot-shoe and via the test button on the back of the camera. My flash was well taken care of, it was never dropped, etc., one day recently while taking pictures it literally just stopped firing. There's no excuse for a product failure such as this. And from what I can see, I am not the only Fujifilm customer having problems with Fuji's flashes. Don't buy it.

Does the job

I am not a flash guy! Unless it’s impractical I always opt for natural light. Last night I had a volunteer gig and felt that I couldn’t take too many chances. The ef42 did the job and now I’ll put it away until the next time.

The flash that could.

This is (Fujifilm EF-42) a very good flash, small, reliable. It takes 2-4 sec to recharge, but takes my old HS30EXR longer to write files to the card (both raw and JPEG). So problems there. The flash follows camera's focal distance up to 70 mm (lanse goes to 130 mm or so). I don't think the focus assist light works with my camera, it only uses camera light for AF assist purposes, but the speedlight's. I am using rechargeable batteries with this flash, they work just fine (Enelopes).

All this with plastic shoe?

Works quite well with my Fuji cameras, I just wish the shoe mount were metal instead of plastic, or at least the mount should have had a lock pin instead of the screw down locking clamp that stresses the plastic shoe mount.

Seems good for my application

Bought this as a more compact flash, than my ef-x500, to put into a pack for taking hiking. My plan is to use as more of a fill flash when taking outdoor photos. I haven't used it yet except to test fire and take a few shots, so therefore only 4 stars. It is pretty simple, with only two buttons to get through the menus, which makes getting through them a bit tedious. It has no switch to lock it onto the hot shoe. Have to use the dial screw to secure it. I like the smaller size and the fact that the head pivot doesn't have a push button to release actually works better for me: If the unit gets a little compressed in my pack, the head can pivot on its own and it's less likely to break. If it does break, I guess it's better than having my ef-x500 break, for sure!

Ample, reasonably priced flash.

I like the medium size of this flash. Not as big as the 500, but has swivel and bounce and enough power. Simple easy to use controls and TTL.

Works as advertised

I mostly needed a flash for macro photography and so far this flash has worked just fine for my XT3 and 80mm lens. I've hardly ever used a flash before so I wanted something quick and easy to use, which this is. I've shot a few hundred pics using the flash and the flash is still recharging quickly. That is, the batteries are holding up well. For me, this was a great purchase.

Flash Unit Meets My Needs

I am using unit with a Fuji XPro2. The flash output is fine for my occasional use. Recycle time is good. I read previous comments that the unit is not as well built as Nikon SB flash units. I did not notice shortcomings in that area but may with extended use. Previously I worked with Nikon cameras, lenses and flash units. The Nikon SB units had more versatility in functions than the Fuji EF42. The EF42 is less complicated to use and does meet my (now) non-professional needs - and at a reasonable price. I do wish the back-lit information screen would remain on while in active flash on use.

question

Is this flash compatible with Fuji X-E2 ? I saw in the description it is compatible with X-Pro1 but the X-E2 is not listed. I was wondering if this description is just obsolete or in fact it is not compatible with X-E2 ?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, the Fujifilm EF42 flash is compatible with the X-E2. The list of compatible models has not been updated yet to reflect the X-E2. We are sorry about any confusion that may have caused.

I use it with a XE2, so this feature is useless for me, but I think it does not work at high speed sync.

question

I can use manual power only in full stops here, right? I mean 1/1, 1/2, 1/4 and so on, but I won't be able to use 1/2+0.5EV in manual setting?
Asked by: Sergey
It appears you are correct. While the flash does have Exposure Compensation capability, it appears it may only be used when shooting in TTL automatic flash output. When setting the flash output manually, it would cycle through (1/1) or 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64 power settings.

question

Will this flash work with the new XT1 from fuji? How does the power compare to a canon 600exII and how fast does it recycle compared to the 600exII? Thank you.
Asked by: Anonymous
The Fujifilm EF42 shoe mount flash will be compatible with the Fujifilm XT1. At full power, the recycling time is roughly 3-3.5 seconds depending on the battery type used (NiMH or alkaline, respectively). The minimum recycle time for the Canon 600 EX RT is 3.3 seconds. The Fujifilm EF42 has a guide number of 138 at ISO 100, whereas the Canon 600 EX RT has a guide number of 197 at ISO 100.

question

Does this flash have rear curtain sync?
Asked by: Anonymous
Rear curtain sync is a setting that will have to be set on the actual camera body, rather than the external flash.
