After several attempts to talk to someone about help I have given up and will seek out another company. I have tried to get this recorder to playback but to no avail, so did even record or is the playback speaker defective. Made in China go figure.

A Decent Voice Recorder With External Microphone

I wanted a cassette recorder reminiscent of the one I had as a kid in the late 1960s. Given the price point, this one is workable and represents a decent compromise. The good: form factor and general build quality are good. I like that it has a mic input, remote pause and 1/4" phono plug/headphone outputs. The audio quality for voice recording, using a decent external microphone (I was using an AKG handheld dynamic voice mic) is pretty good, considering this is Type 1 tape with no noise reduction. Noticeably better than micro cassette with the same external mic. With this mic, I found it best to not overdrive the input, so I talked not so loudly; there's no record level control, it's all automatic. The bad: If you're used to servo-driven cassette decks from the 1980s, there are a few things to note. You shouldn't go from play to rewind or FF directly without first stopping the transport, else you risk breaking the device. This doesn't have that kind of transport. Even an old Sony Walkman, or a micro cassette recorder, would permit those kinds of control changes. With this unit, it's safest to press stop before changing modes. This is indicated in the instructions. Also, it doesn't vary its record bias or equalization with higher bias tapes, like chrome, ferri-chrome or metal. It'll play them, but you'll notice the high end will be brighter than normal. This unit is designed for use with Type 1 normal bias tapes. The ugly: the internal mic is all but useless, as you pick up motor noise from the plastic chassis. Best to use an external mic at all times. And if you playback too loudly the speaker will buzz. This isn't a high-fidelity, music-oriented recorder. I'd say its intent is for voice recording. But, with a good external mic, at the appropriate sound level, it produces good voice recordings. I like its portability with 4 C-sized batteries, and it comes with an AC adapter, too.

I use the recorder in my bird watching activities. So far, it has worked well, especially the counter (which on some past machines I've had didn't work). It seems to be well made and dependable. I would recommend it to others,

I ordered this cassette player for my 93 year old mother. She made lots of recordings many years ago and her old player quit working. I was able to quickly show her how to use it and it is a good quality product with excellent sound from the speaker. It is fairly large for this kind of product by today's standards but the excellent sound warrants the size and makes it easier for my mom to use. I highly recommend.

Love to, but I can't recommend Califone CAS1500 Cassette

I love reviewing of a good product but the Califone CAS1500 Cassette Player/Recorder is not such a product. I've just used it a few hours, and at random times the sound simply stops. The tape is moving but there's no sound production. I'm able to stop the tape, start playing it again and the sound comes back on, but who needs that? I'm not looking forward to the hassles of returning it, but I feel I have no choice. I'd've gladly paid much more for this or any other player that simply works well and is hassle free.

Dont buy this

I was looking for an average quality cassette player but this is way below average. The speaker sound is barely audible, the build quality is flimsy and the motor is extremely noisy. This is maybe worth 15-20 bucks max, not 60. Im returning mine ASAP.
