The SuperSlim USB 2.0 9.5mm Optical Drive External Enclosure from OWC / Other World Computing turns any 9.5mm slot-loading internal optical drive into an external solution. The enclosure makes CD, DVD, and/or Blu-ray disc burning and playing easy with Mac and Windows PCs. It's bus powered, meaning there's no AC adapter needed, and ultra-thin and lightweight for easy transport in your gear bag. OWC / Other World Computing USB 2.0 optical d... reviews

SuperSlim USB 2.0 9.5mm Optical Drive External Enclosure is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Elegant solution After reading many reviews for less expensive external enclosure options, I decided on this one for the fact it was specifically designed for the Mac's superdrive. Everything fit and worked great. Note that at times Macs may not recognize an external optical drive - just open Disk Utility and that many times will refresh your devices.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well, easy to set up I used this to house the optical drive I took out of my MacBook Pro when I put an SSD in its place. It works fine, nothing fancy. The only drawback is that it is a plastic case and so it's not particularly durable (and if you put anything on top of it it bends and touches the disk inside, so.... don't do that). I would recommend it, but not for travel use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great solution. I wanted to keep my existing optical drive in use after replacing it with a second hard drive in my Macbook Pro, and this allows for that quite nicely while maintaining a low profile. Worth the premium if you're like me and would rather not buy a new external and shelf the one you pull out of your laptop. Clever, solid construction (despite being plastic), and everything inside-and-out is secure. Looks good and works as it should off a single USB port (though it does come with a double-port cable in case you need it).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Flimsy Got this for my 2011 MBP's superdrive which I removed to make space for a 2nd HDD in the laptop. It's flimsy feeling and I'm afraid that it will get crushed in my bag. The Apple external superdrive looks like its made out of aluminum and will probably last longer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get This Case If you have an old MacBook sitting in a closet and need a way to read discs on your MacBook Pro Retina, this is the case to get. It's easily assembled and the included cable will get the job done. Some technical know-how is needed to gut your old retired computer. I didn't need to use both USB ports to power the drive but the included cable is long enough to stretch across my MacBook Pro Retina to use both ports.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cheaply made, but a good solution This enclosure is cheaply made, even considering the low price. Still, if you've removed your laptop's optical drive to make room for a second hard drive, this is probably a better option than buying another external optical drive. Considering how often I'm going to use the optical drive (maybe 4-5 times/year), it's just fine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Reuse anot old Scott less dvd-rw I bought this because I had a trayless dvdrw from a laptop that went bad. The dvdrw installed and worked great. Absolutely no issues finding the drive or any functions. The only issue with the device is the there is no way to manually remove the inserted disk unless you plug it into a working computer

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent unit Excellent unit. Only complaint was that it felt flimsy when I got it but once the drive was installed properly it felt much more sturdy. would prefer it to have the USB cable attached like the Apple external Superdrive but no big deal really. No more than I use it right now.
