Pentax O-GPS1 Reviews
Works but clunky
Bought it for travel photography, used it with K-S2. It did the job, but (1) it is an awkward extra lump to add to a camera and requires yet another battery to organise, and (2) it is insecure on the hot shoe, having fallen off a few times, once in a street gutter, and finally in a forest in the Pyrenees, where it still rests, somewhere in the undergrowth. A rather expensive ($200) experiment in geolocation.
GPS me.
Used with the Pentax K-70 and the Astrotracer function. Works well and solid construction.
GPS Module to Be Used Location/Astrophotograpy
Unit purchased 1/21. First used 3/5. Highly Accurate identifying present location and altitude. Will be using unit primarily for astrophotography paired with a Pentax KP. Have to wait for spring and the snow to melt to put it threw its paces. Was not able to obtain signal indoors due to metal roof. Glad I stuck with Pentax all these years!
Probably works ok, but not on my location
BE aware, that if you live in a city or town and you got magnetic interference (like I do, as I come to find out) this unit won't function properly. I havent field-tested it in an actual field with less cars, less power lines, less wifi networks and more sky above me. A good way to tell how well it's gonna work can be predicted by if you use any travel map like google or apple that needs GPS and if you had issues with it being inaccurate at your home, then this unit will also miscalculate and will not function as intended.
Worked like a champ
I purchased this for my Pentax K5 camera and the 2020 Jupiter/Saturn conjunction. I had no issues in establishing a GPS signal and using the Astrotracker for a longer exposure. I am looking forward to using it for more astrophotography as I get experienced for an upcoming Dark Skies vacation.
Perfect for astrophotography
Bought this specifically for astrophotography. Put in a battery, hooked it up to my camera, and I was up and running. There's a bright blue power LED on it, which is a bit annoying when shooting at night, but I was otherwise able to get some great photos with minimal setup. Definitely recommend.
amazing tech
I own this O-GPS1 module and use it on a Pentax K-70. It works flawlessly, even after I turn it off and move to a different part of the yard. calibration takes 15 seconds and usually only needs to be done once. When using a 10 mm lens I can expose for 120 sec; when using my Rokinon 135 mm, 20 seconds still results in round stars. I'll attach a single image of the Lagoon Nebula taken with 135 mm lens and 20 second exposure and also one of the Andromeda Galaxy.
Worth the cost.
Nice addition to my K-70. I understand that Pentax is coming out with a new version, but with the pandemic I decided to take the plunge under the a bird in hand is worth two in the bush philosophy. So far I have enjoyed the additional features it has unlocked in the K-70 -- astrophotography and geo-tagging. I even take it to my kids football games just to tag the photos for location and general direction of the shot. My 2 complaints are: no case for the cost and on/off button. For the price, Pentax should ship it with a simple case, even a fabric on to ensure the bottom contacts are kept clean. I found a small bag, but that's really just cheap on the part of Pentax to not include a simple 25 cent nylon bag. Second issue is the on/off button. It is not great. A slider or toggle would be better to give you positive feedback on whether it's off or on. My fingers are big and I have trouble seeing the lights for feedback. I occasionally think I have it on only to find I don't. Also the blue lights are blinding at night, so I stick a piece of electrical tape over them. Overall worth picking up.
