Vixen Optics 11305 Reviews

6x16 Artscope Monocular (Red) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Clear optics, compact form, nice feel i'd recommend this to anyone looking for a good, compact means of magnification. i tried the 8x and the difference in magnification wasn't worth the extra length to me. the 6x is compact and has stayed in my every day bag since it's purchase. i purchased with the intent to use indoors at museums, to view architectural details, and to in general, bring things closer to view. the kids can even use it. - i think the finish could be nicer - rather than rubber banding for grip, i would have liked some form of knurling or texture on the barrel, or nothing at all. - though it's compact, it would be nice if it had a standard 1/4 thread for mounting to a tripod or attaching to other camera/optics accessories.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It helps me see stuff. I've often said that my eyes have more issues than National Geographic magazine. As a result of same, I'm constantly on the lookout for things that can help me make out detail at a distance a little bit better. It was, in fact, an eyepiece very like this that allowed me to get through the last year of high school and most of university without having to sit three feet from the board while notes were being written. I lost that eyepiece a long time ago, though, and have been on the lookout for one like it ever since. A few years ago, I found an inexpensive and functionally similar one that I still have. Then I came to B&H and found this one. What's better about this than the one I already had? Well: 1) It's much better-built. This thing feels solid, and the focusing action on it is smooth. 2) It's better optically. The eyepiece is nice and bright, and high-contrast. Focusing is accurate, and the image is razor sharp across the whole eyepiece. In short, it's just, well, better at everything it's supposed to do. I suppose it's not perfect, though; the place to attach the lanyard is on the front of the eyepiece, so that as you turn the front to focus you wind the lanyard around the eyepiece. You could, I guess, always turn the part closer to your eye to focus it, but that means taking it at least a little ways away from your eye during that time. That, though, is a minor glitch in what is otherwise a great product, and which I cannot recommend highly enough if you're looking for a high-quality visual aid.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I can see the pupils in the models eyes I am in a portrait painting class, I use the monocular to see the details in my models face. I was amazed at the clarity the unit gave me from 15 feet away. I would be missing so much painting information without this new tool. I only wish there were something that would steady my hand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfection Because I have limited vision in my right eye a monocular works great for me at the theater when I want to see a face close up. This is small, easy to focus, light weight and works perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! This is a fantastic little monocular. Exactly what I was looking for. I love the fact that it is usable as a regular monocular for things far away (like any other monocular/binocular) as well as a close up device. It focuses incredibly close almost like a macro lens on a camera. This is one use not often talked about: If you are a macro photographer, this monocular will help you "scout out" new things to shoot. To me, the 6x16 is a great balance between size, brightness and magnification. I always find 8x magnification monoculars too shaky to hold. The built quality is very good, the focus action is smooth and firm without being too firm. I thought about getting the Leica Monovid, but I'm glad I got this one instead. The Monovid requires to screw in an additional lens for close-ups, the Vixen doesn't. It is also very light, which comes in handy for my travel-light camera bag. The optic is very clear and contrasty. Some people say it's dim, but I can't confirm this. It is as bright as a 6x16 can be. I have a 6x30 which is a lot brighter of course, but that one is also several times the size of the Vixen. You can't have everything. Excellent value for the price. I highly recommend it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excellent instrument for the price Image quality is very good. Much better than I expected from such a modestly priced instrument. At four meters the Vixen produces a sharper more contrasty image than my old Zeiss 8 X 10 monocular. At infinity, I can see no difference in image quality between the two. The build quality is also very good. The monocular looks and feels like a high-class optical instrument, such as one made by Nikon or Olympus. The monocular has lens caps for both the objective and the eyepiece. They are identical and, therefore, interchangeable. They fit well. Neither too loose nor too tight. They stay on when they should but come off easily when you want them off. At its closest focusing distance, 25cm, its image seems as good as the image produced by my E. Leitz 8 X aplanatic magnifier (working distance 13mm). I have used the aplanat for nearly 50 years and have always considered it to be the gold standard in magnifiers. Magnification at infinity is 6 X, but it increases as the focus moves to nearby objects. At 25cm it is about 10 X. Moving the focus point from infinity to 25cm takes a lot of turning, but the mechanism is very smooth and well damped. This makes precise focusing easy and, once focus is achieved, it is not easily disturbed. I am very pleased with my purchase. I recommend the instrument to anyone looking for a pocket-sized monocular that can be used as a long-distance magnifier.
