Panasonic DMC-GX8KBODY Overview

  • 1Description

Pairing 4K recording and an updated Micro Four Thirds sensor, the black Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 is a sleek, compact mirrorless camera enabling versatile, multimedia recording. Utilizing a high resolution 20.3 MP Digital Live MOS sensor, along with a Venus Engine image processor, the GX8 is able to record 4K UHD movies at 30 or 24 fps, record full-resolution stills at 10 fps with AF-S or 8MP stills at 30 fps, and work in difficult lighting situations with a top sensitivity of ISO 25600. Complementing the imaging capabilities is a unique Dual I.S. system that offers the use of both in-camera and in-lens image stabilization systems to effectively minimize the appearance of camera shake. The body design is also characterized by a durable, magnesium alloy construction that incorporates a tilting 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a free angle 3.0" 1.04m-dot rear OLED touchscreen to suit working from a variety of angles. Offering an enhanced set of imaging features with a comfortable form factor, the GX8 is an everyday camera designed with advanced multimedia capture in mind.

Among other features, the GX8 also features built-in Wi-Fi with NFC to enable seamless wireless image transfer and remote camera control from linked smartphones or tablets. Benefitting both stills and movies, Panasonic's DFD (Depth-From-Defocus) AF system helps to quicken focusing speeds while a Starlight AF feature maintains focusing accuracy in low-light down to -4 EV and manual focus is accented by focus peaking and Touch AF controls.

20.3MP Digital Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
An updated 20.3MP Digital Live MOS Micro Four Thirds sensor pairs with the Venus Engine image processor to deliver fast overall performance, a wider dynamic range, with notable image quality to suit working in a wide variety of conditions. Sensitivity ranges from ISO 200 to 25600, with the ability to extend down to ISO 100 for working in bright conditions or with longer shutter speeds. Versatile burst shooting modes also allow you to pair high continuous shooting rates with single-shot or continuous autofocus. Using the mechanical focal plane shutter, you can shoot up to 8 fps with AF-S, 6 fps with AF-C, and 5.5 fps during live view with AF-S. For even faster performance, up to 10 fps shooting is possible with the electronic shutter function or 30 fps at 8 MP using the 4K Photo Modes.
4K UHD Video Recording
In addition to the versatile still shooting modes, the GX8 also supports recording 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) video with either 30p or 24p frames rates at 100 Mbps in the MP4 format. Full HD 1080p/60 is also supported, in both MP4 and AVCHD formats, as well as HD and SD resolutions.

A built-in stereo microphone can be used during recordings, and features an integrated wind-cut filter, or an optional external microphone can be utilized via the 2.5mm jack for even clearer sound.
4K Photo Modes
Utilizing the 4K video recording capabilities, a trio of still shooting modes are available for recording continuous 8 MP stills at a 30 fps shooting rate:
  • 4K Burst: Just as with video recording, this mode will allow you to continuously record 8 MP images at 30 fps for up to 29 min. 59 sec., making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.
  • 4K Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record 8 MP images at 30 fps one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.
  • 4K Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the 4K video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8 MP frame.
Dual Image Stabilization
Helping to achieve the utmost sharpness when photographing handheld, Dual I.S. combines the GX8's sensor-shift image stabilization technology with lens-based image stabilization to compensate for a broader range of movement types to render sharper, clearer imagery. Dual I.S. requires the use of compatible Lumix lenses featuring O.I.S.
Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
  • A large OLED Live View Finder features a unique tilting design to benefit working from low angles and also has an impressive 2.36m-dot resolution, 0.77x magnification, and 10,000:1 contrast ratio.
  • A larger means for image composition and playback, the 3.0" 1.04m-dot rear OLED monitor has a free angle, tilt and swivel design to support viewing from a variety of angles. It is also a touchscreen, which permits intuitive menu navigation and settings control.
  • Constructed from magnesium alloy with die-cast front and rear frames, the GX8 features a durable design that also incorporates extensive sealing at each joint, dial, and button to render it both splash- and dust-proof.
  • The sleek flat-body profile incorporates both front and rear dials for intuitive control over aperture and shutter speed settings. Eight assignable function buttons are also available, as well as a dedicated exposure compensation dial.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC allows for wireless image sharing and remote camera control from linked smartphones and tablets.
Depth-From-Defocus and Starlight AF Technologies
For accelerated autofocus performance, DFD (Depth-From-Defocus) technology is employed to quickly calculate the distance to subjects and adjust the focusing position in as little as 0.07 seconds, which enables continuous shooting up to 6 fps with continuous AF. This contrast-detection type focus method benefits both still and video recording modes, as well as subject tracking applications where subject color, size, and motion vectors are used to intelligently lock-onto the moving subjects and ensure precise focus. Additionally, supporting working in low-light conditions, a Starlight AF feature enables accurate AF performance down to -4 EV.

Benefitting manual focus operation, focus peaking is available that highlights bright edges of contrast with a colored outline for quickly recognizing your focus point, as well as Touch MF Assist for touch-to-focus operation.
Other Camera Features
  • A mechanical focal plane shutter enables a fast maximum shutter speed of 1/8000 sec., as well as a top flash sync speed of 1/250 sec. An electronic shutter function also avails a top shutter speed of 1/16,000 sec. to better enable working in bright conditions and with wider aperture settings.
  • More than 100 consecutive full-resolution JPG files can be captured in a burst, or approximately 30 consecutive raw files in a single burst.
  • Raw image files can be processed in-camera for a more streamlined post-production workflow.
  • Depending on the lens in use, the included DMW-BLC12 battery provides approximately 330 shots per charge when using the rear monitor, or 310 with the electronic viewfinder.
  • Photo Style modes: Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, Scenery, Portrait, Custom, Cinelike D, and Cinelike V.
  • Creative Control modes: Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Monochrome, Dynamic Monochrome, Rough Monochrome, Silky Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Toy Pop, Bleach Bypass, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Fantasy, Star Filter, One Point Color, and Sunshine.

    Panasonic DMC-GX8KBODY Reviews

Lumix DMC-GX8 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only, Black) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 86.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best bang for you photographic $$$ I'm a professional photographer and videographer and have recently sold all my Nikon Full Frame gear to move to 4/3rds full time. I can easily pull poster sized prints that are sharp, contrasty and clear with great colour. The next moment, I can shoot 4K broadcast quality video that rivals anything else in the market. Lenses are plentiful, economical, and extremely light weight. I can go out with a GX 8 and my Gh4 and a half dozen lenses to cover 12mm-300mm - that's 24mm-600mm in a small fancy pack style lowePro, and not be sore and aching. This is a serious camera for Pros and amateurs a like. --------------------

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good value and Quality. I like this camera and am pleased with the quality of the camera and component lenses. Lighter and smaller than full frame, but with plenty large file size for my use. I really like both the pivoting view finder and LCD Screen, both are useful for shooting at odd angles. I've owned almost every major brand of camera (though not recently) and am pleased with Panasonic's value and quality. I hike a lot and with the 14-140 lens it is relatively lightweight and very useful combo for a high end camera. Got hooked using the DMC-LX7 and predecessors as one of the best pocket cameras around. Had the GX8 for two years with no problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My First Mirrorless Just a background, I'm just an amateur photographer so this won't be a very technical review. I use the camera mostly for family and travel photos. Been using it for a few days now and i'm very happy with it. Previous camera was a Lumix LX5 and this is definitely a great upgrade. I haven't explored all features yet but for the basic ones, it does the job. Build quality is very good, not too heavy even if i attach my external flash (430 EX II). The OLED screen is very sharp and doesn't leave much thumbprints. I find the multiple Fn buttons a bit confusing and i personally think it can do without the others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my new camera! I am an enthusiast photographer & wanted to upgrade my DSLR for a compact but interchangeable camera. I stumbled on this one.Read so many good reviews & was blewn away by the images that this camera has captured. It is true, this camera is fast! I love the fact that is weather sealed( but not gonna immersed it in water )don't have to worry when I'm gonna get caught in a rain when taking pictures. I love the touchscreen & can upload through wifi. I love the design on this camera ( I have the silver) Loveeee!! My First micro 4/3 camera & fell in loveeee!!! I paired this this Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4. Absolutely love the lens!!!!!! If u want a perfect bokeh ugh this lens is aaaamaazing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Panasonic DMC-GX8 As a first time user of a mirrorless camera, I am pleasant surprised by the ease of use and the lightness of the camera. It is a joy to use. The size and weight together with it picture quality, just did it for me. Although it has many positives about it, the GX8 has sever things I didn't like about. Being a DSLR camera user for many years, being able to only shoot about 330 shots on a single charge is certainly the biggest drawback to me. So be prepared to spend on extra batteries. The other thing that got my goat was the eye piece. It was made of hard plastic and rectangular it shape. As I always use the view finder for my shoots, the edge of the eye piece cuts into my eye pretty badly. I wish Panasonic would use a softer rubber for the eye piece. Overall, I like the GX8 very much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No surprises here.... another home run Panasonic has done it again, this time with a weather sealed body, new 20mp sensor , dual IS, a class leading touch display and internal 4k (that wont overheat after 30 mins) .....sorry sony A7Rii . The best camera is the one that you always have on you, and this camera fits that bill on many tics. Paired with the large selection of premium Panasonic/ Olympus glass, this camera will not disappoint. Whether you are shooting 4k internal video or snapping some still shots, this camera will be your every day workhorse. Lag is non-existent and the manual focus on this camera is simply unmatched. My only complaint along with many is the battery life which could be a bit better for the size of this camera. Also note this is not a pocket camera by any means. This is the GH4 revamped for still photography. Good job panasonic. Loving it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Panny has exceeded all expectations! After one month I have only just started to enjoy this beauty. 4K photo modes are awesome. Dual image stabilization works! In camera RAW editing is a nice touch on the road. A ridiculous number of ways to customize the abundance of programmable function buttons. The build is sturdy and a bit larger than the GX-7 but I like it. Focus is lightning fast, even in difficult lighting. Touch screen is a great improvement (even took my first non-smartphone selfie with my kids) and the LVF is the best out there. And of course B&H never disappoints, ever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really Great Eight... Excellent Viewfinder, weather sealed, articulated LCD and sensitive touch screen (fastest way to change AF point), lots of custom buttons for pro use, 20MP that has more crop ability, great balance with tele lenses like 100-400mm, not small not big just perfect size, comfortable grip, 1/8000 shutter speed (mechanical), wi-fi, NFC etc. Most important thing is AF speed that it's incredible fast and reliable even in low light (faster than my 5DM3)... High ISO is not a problem with an improved I.S. because you do not have to use high ISOs. However you can get perfectly usable photos up to ISO3200. Panasonic has many great lenses that i ever used and almost all have I.S. DOF is so nice like full frame sensor when i use like panasonic 42.5mm f1.7 lens. So i stop using big, heavy and old DSLR systems. No need anymore...

In a nice touch, Panasonic has removed the 29 minute, 59 second recording restriction from non-European models, so it's only European users who might by stymied by the workings of EU duty regulations. Is it true that there is no clip limit of 29 minutes 59 seconds anymore for non-European releases of this camera? The above review on dpreview says so. But your spec listing says there is. Which one is correct?

Please take the camera out of the box, put a really big card in it, plug it in with a DC adapter and see how long it will run. Thank you.

How does it do in low light?
    Asked by: Anonymous
I think this camera has an effective rating of ISO400 if you want to maintain low noise. The camera ISO rating, in my opinion, is overrated by a stop. It's close to the speed/noise behavior of a Canon Rebel.
