Canon 1005C002 Overview

  • 1Description

The Canon VIXIA HF G40 Full HD Camcorder records 1920 x 1080p Full HD video at 60 fps in MP4 format. The HF G40 is equipped with a Genuine Canon 20x HD Video Lens and a manual focus ring that can easily be set to control the zoom instead. The camera supports Wide DR gamma and Highlight Priority mode for improved image clarity. Assignable buttons and full manual control allows you to customize the shooting experience and take control of your image.

The HF G40 records to dual SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slots. You can record to just one or both simultaneously, and the dual card slots also support relay recording, which automatically switches video recording to the second media card when the first one fills up. For steady shooting in a variety of conditions, the camera offers intelligent optical image stabilization with powered and dynamic modes. This feature enables five-axis correction to correct camera shake throughout the full range of motion. For shot preview and image playback, the HF 40 is outfitted with a 3.5" OLED capacitive touch display and a 0.24" tiltable color LCD viewfinder.

The HF G40 also provides dual-band Wi-Fi technology that lets you share your videos quickly, using a variety of methods. You can use compatible wireless networks, wireless hotspots, or iOS mobile devices to share footage. You can also use Wi-Fi to back up and quickly transfer files. Canon equipped the HF G40 with several professional shooting functions and advanced display features including Focus Assist, Zebra Pattern, Color Bars, and Test Tone. Slow and fast motion recording are available, as well as interval (time-lapse). Some of the camera's other features include Audio Scene Select, headphone and microphone jacks, HDMI connectivity, and a Mini Advanced Accessory Shoe that supports attachment of a variety of shooting aids including lights and microphones.

Genuine Canon 20x HD Video Lens
The VIXIA HF G40 has a Genuine Canon 20x HD video lens that uses aspherical lens technology to achieve low chromatic aberration and high resolution, while maintaining a compact form factor. Super spectra coating technology lowers flare and ghosting as well.
8-Blade Circular Aperture and Hybrid Focusing System
The Canon 20x HD Video Lens also features an 8-blade circular aperture that reduces the "starburst" effect found in camcorders with non-circular apertures. The result is a more appealing circularly blurred background in the out-of-focus areas. This feature is bolstered by a manual focus ring, which allows more accurate control. For extra flexibility, the manual focus ring can be set to control zoom instead. Besides manual focusing, the camera supports a Hybrid AF with Instant AF or Medium AF, Normal AF, Face Priority AF, and Face-Only AF.

Manual Control

Custom Key and Dial
A Custom Key and Dial feature allows you to assign functions to an easily accessible key and adjust the settings with a control dial. The functions include:
  • Tv/Av: Use the dial to adjust shutter speed (Tv mode) or aperture (Av mode), as needed. In this mode, the key has no effect.
  • Manual exposure: When manual control is selected, the dial can adjust aperture and shutter.
  • Exposure Lock can be set on or off, as can the AGC Limit.
Gain Control
Gain may be manually set from 0 to 24 dB in 1 dB increments. Auto Gain Control Limit allows you to set the maximum gain limit for the image sensor's sensitivity so that image quality can be maximized in low-light situations.
Power Zoom
Power zoom is available in variable and constant settings in three modes: Fast (approx. 1.9-60 seconds), Normal (approx. 2.5-180 seconds) and Slow (approx. 4.0-285 seconds). 16-predefined steps in Constant mode provides added control.
Focus Assist and High-Definition Peaking
The VIXIA HF G40 camcorder provides Focus Assist, which provides 2x magnification of your subject, and deactivates as soon as you start recording. Color peaking highlights the sharpest areas in the frame so you can easily check your focus.

AVCHD and MP4 Recording Formats
The VIXIA HF G40 supports MP4 recording at up to HD 1080p60 resolution.
Slow and Fast Motion Recording
The VIXIA HF G40 allows you to add a fast or slow motion effect to your captured video by letting you record in a different frame rate than the one you use for playback. You can record interval video from 0.4x to 1200x speed.
Built-In Dual-Band Wi-Fi
Built-in Wi-Fi technology lets you share your HD video through compatible networks, wireless hotspots, and iOS mobile devices using the free Canon Movie Uploader app. Transfer files to selected FTP servers for backup or when a quick transfer is necessary. Share videos over the internet with Canon's free iMAGE GATEWAY online photo storage service as well. You can even watch videos stored on the camera's memory cards directly on your TV, or use your PC or mobile device to browse remotely through the previously recorded videos stored on your camcorder, without connecting a cable. The Remote Browse function uses a standard web browser and does not even require a special app.
Remote Operation Through Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi technology also allows for remote control of key camcorder controls, such as recording start/stop and zoom (in three different speeds), exposure functions (iris, shutter speed, gain, and more) and focus settings.
LANC Control
The camcorder features a 2.5mm stereo mini jack LANC port, under the HDMI out connector. This is an input for LANC control only.
OLED 3.5" Capacitive Touch Display
The touch-sensitive Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) panel on the VIXIA HF G40 supports capacitive touch responsiveness, 10,000:1 contrast ratio, and 1,230,000 dots of resolution. Touch operation also affords more fluid control of camera functions like Touch and Track, Touch Focus, and Touch Exposure.
Tilt Electronic 0.24" Color LCD Viewfinder
The VIXIA HF G40 features a 0.24" color LCD electronic viewfinder with approximately 100% field of view coverage and 1,560,000 dots of resolution. It can be tilted up to 45° from its normal resting position as well, which enables more shooting freedom. Settings can even be adjusted with a handy joystick so you don't have to stop looking through the viewfinder. And, because it is positioned where your thumb naturally rests while holding the camera, you can shoot and adjust easily—even with one hand.
Dual SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card Slots with Relay Recording
The VIXIA HF G40 allows you to record video directly to widely available SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards with capacities ranging from 32GB all the way up to 2TB. They are available in ultra-fast reading and writing speeds that make it easy to share video. Plus, dual slots on the VIXIA HF G40 enable Relay Recording. The camcorder automatically switches to the second memory card when the first one becomes full, so there's no need to worry about running out of recording time.
Wide DR Mode
Selecting Wide DR Gamma mode suppresses overexposure in bright areas of your image. This has the effect of expanding the dynamic range to 600% and helping provide smooth detail with accurate color rendition while limiting blown-out highlights.
Highlight Priority Mode
VIXIA HF G40 camcorder has a new Highlight Priority mode that achieves effects similar to HDR modes in other camcorders. By reducing the mid to high-brightness compression of the standard gamma mode, the Highlight Priority mode helps prevent loss of detail in high-brightness areas.
View Assist for Highlight Priority Mode
The View Assist function allows the camera's viewfinder and LED panel to increase brightness and medium tone gamma to display your images with the brightness and gradation with which they are being recorded.
High-Capacity Lithium-Ion Battery
The VIXIA HF G40 is powered by a high-capacity rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack that lets you shoot longer. It also features intelligent technology that accurately indicates remaining battery time down to the minute.
Intelligent Optical Image Stabilization System
Canon's sophisticated SuperRange optical image stabilizer helps compensate for camera shake. Canon's DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor enables Dynamic Image Stabilization mode, which provides continuous adjustment throughout the entire zoom range to correct a broad range of motion issues, with extra compensation applied at wide-angle focal lengths. The system stabilizes rotational camera shake, and this helps ensure smooth, virtually distortion-free video, even when you're walking while shooting.
Linear PCM Audio Recording
The VIXIA HF G40 supports pro-quality 16-bit LPCM audio recording for enhanced sound fidelity. This format is also fully compatible with both video and audio editing software. LPCM is supported only in 28 and 24 Mb/s recording modes.
Audio Scene Select
Audio Scene Select offers five modes that automatically optimize settings based on the recording situation. This makes it easy to record more realistic, immersive audio in a range of situations.
Optional Canon WM-V1 Wireless Microphone
This Canon camcorder works with a range of accessories including Canon's WM-V1 Wireless Microphone, which streams audio wirelessly from subjects up to 164' away. It's ideal for when you're shooting talking subjects from far away. It can also be used as a standalone transceiver to cue shooting and more.
Zebra, Color Bars, Test Tone
The VIXIA HF G30 has a range of functions designed to pinpoint focus adjustment and exposure control for professional-level quality. Zebra Pattern indicates "blown out" or high-brightness areas to help you set proper exposure. Color Bars and Test Tone can be selected and recorded to adjust video and audio quality.
Composition Aids
With the integrated Level Marker feature, it's easy to keep the camcorder level for more accurate framing. There's also a Grid Marker that provides a reference grid in your viewfinder. The Grid Marker is also available in two different colors for better viewing contrast.
Versatile Mini Advanced Accessory Shoe
The integrated Mini Advanced Accessory Shoe allows you to attach optional Canon accessories, such as the VL-5 Video Light, VFL-2 Video Flash Light, DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone, or SM-V1 5.1-Channel Surround Microphone. However, on the VFL-2, only the video light function is supported.

Canon 1005C002 Reviews

VIXIA HF G40 Full HD Camcorder is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 51.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from High quality camera, well made, and PDF manual most helpful Prior to using this camera, I had only used the lower-level Canon HF R300, which was fine for moderate resolution and adequate sound. This new HF G40 is on a whole different level: the controls are well-made, easy to use, much flexibility in programming shot types and sound types, and just a lot of fun shooting clips. I did find, as others have mentioned, that default sound levels are on the hot side, so dropping these manually makes a much clearer sound. Last night I recorded an outdoor jazz concert (in 90-degree weather); the picture and sound (Manually adjusted down a bit) were really quite fine. So happy both with quality of the camera and quality of output.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Camcorder The Canon Vixia HF G40, is the best camcorder I have ever used, and I have used quite a few different models over the years, why you ask? well for one, the build id very rugged, and fits nicely in your hands, its not small and dinky like some of the others, it has a feel of a true pro camcorder with many many pro features, such as a very large OLED Screen with touch capabilities, dual SD card Slots..WiFi.if you so desire to use it, I prefer to take out my SD cards and download my foto's and Videos directly to my iMac and the most Important feature of all.beautiful breath taking video, the best i have ever seen, and did I mention, this camcorder shines in low light situations? no noise....and either beautiful stills, or excellent either AVCHD or MP-4 witch Incidentally you can convert your AVCHD to MP-4 in Camera for either posting or editing......I highly recommend it.....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera for live streaming I am the IT director for my church. After much research and comparisons I settled on the Canon Vixia HF G40. purchased this camcorder for the sole purpose of live streaming our church services. I selected this camcorder based on the features and reputation of Canon products. Set up was easy and it operated flawlessly right out of the box. The picture quality is superb and the video quality over the Internet exceeded my expectations. I feel like I receive good value for the price. Dealing with B&H is always delightful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Action Camera I started my career doing VLOGs with an HF20. The next camera upgrade was my old trusty G20. Then I passed on the G30 upon a rumor of a coming G40. It was well worth the wait. My cell phone started ringing off the hook. Competitors in motorsport business starting calling how I got shots at traditionally dark venues. I think most venues in the sport of Truck and Tractor pull are dark. But the results were garnering serious attention. The footage copies down to Windows easy enough. And editing this codec along with all my other Canon cameras is a snap. It is not uncommon for me to have up to 4 cameras at a time rolling still using a 60D for interview footage. If you are limited to dark venues, give this camera a try, you will not be underwhelmed. You will enjoy what footage you get.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality and full manual control I was looking for a camcorder that allows full manual control at a reasonable cost. The G40 meets my expectations. Besides normal everyday video recordings, I will be using this camcorder for situations where autofocus and autoexposure often fail. Examples include airshows and model rocket launches, where the autofocus wants to focus on the sky rather than the airplane/rocket. Also will be using this camcorder with the 1.5X converter and a solar filter to take video of the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. Again manual focus is critical for that application. Besides the manual control, I also like many of the other features of this camcorder, including wifi, the LCD viewfinder, and dual memory card slots.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall pleased with Camcorder Sport recording was my purpose in purchasing this camcorder. I appreciate the 60 frames/second for this. Overall I'm pleased with the camcorder, it is a bit heavy when hand -held for extended time-frames. I did have to get used to the zoom, if I could switch the lever around, it would be helpful as when I want to zoom, I end up widening the shot. Also I had to adjust to the start button positioned adjacent to the set button. I'd prefer the record button to be closest to my palm which is not the case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excellent choice I bought this CANNON VIXIA HF G40 CAMCORDER approximately two weeks ago and am most pleased with the quality. This is my 3rd Cannon Vixia Camcorder and Cannon continues with operating improvements and picture quality. I use the camera in my commercial real estate business as well as to make home movies of my grandchildren. It is a very simple process to transfer to my IMac for editing and adding touches for the finished DVD's. The slow and fast speeds work well but do require a number of setting changes, I find this function works much easier on my IMac in the editing process. I use the automatic setting most all of the time now as my eyes are failing and am happy to say that I could not improve on the quality. Finally, I am pleased to say that B & H has been my source for purchases now for over 10 years, in my opinion they are the BEST! .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Video Camera, so many little things done right I'm sure you can find the technical specs on line and at review sites, with better description than I can provide. I'll just give my impressions. I've been recording video and taking photos as an hobby for over 35 years. I had used a VIXIA HV30 for years prior to retiring it for a 70D for both photo and video. The 70D makes great photos, and decent videos but it does take some work. I missed the features of a video camera and when Canon made this compact G40 I became intrigued. I've only owned it for two weeks but so far it has impressed. The 20x power zoom and video optimized focusing make taking great looking HD videos easy in a wide variety of conditions. This camera is light weight, compact, but feels solid. I shoot everything at the highest quality settings and get 4 hours with the larger battery on 1 and a half 64GB SD card. The bonus is that it also takes a pretty good photo in a pinch. I like that I can put photos on one card an video on the other. Its easier to take excellent photos with the 70D, however. The G40 is more compact for the same long lens. They will both find a home in my camera bag. Importing videos into FCPX and photos into aperture is slick and seamless.

What editing software (for Mac) is this compatible with? Will it transfer to FCP without needing to be converted first? Is it compatible with older versions of FCE?
Asked by: Brittany S.
The camera's recording codecs/files do not need to be converted when transferring to FCP or iMovie.

What's new in the G40 that wasn't in the G30?
Asked by: Michael F.
Although very similar the HFG40 has been tweaked just a bit. It incorporates a new version of the HD CMOS sensor that Canon claims has better low-light performance (an increase of 3dB of signal-to-noise). It also has Canon's Wide DR flatter-gamma profile for preserving more shadow and highlight detail than generic profiles as well as a Highlight Priority mode. Canon has also added a Looks setting to make it easier to access.

What are the differences between this camera and the XA30? They seem to share the same lens, sensor, viewfinder and dual storage card capability. Is the difference mainly the top handle that the XA30 has?
Asked by: DONALD V.
The Canon xa30 includes 2 xlr inputs, and the Canon g40 only includes a 3.5mm. You also have more manual controls in the XA30, as well as the handle.

The stabilization for handheld shots looks bad on several YT vids. Has anyone tried the Dynamic POWERED stabilization? Does it come close to Sony's Balanced Optical Steady Shot?
Asked by: George H.
Canon's system works well, but SONY's Balanced Optical SteadyShot is the superior technology in my practical field experience.
