Canon 4383B004AA overview

  • 1Description

Canon's VIXIA HF R11 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder provides you with 1920 x 1080 HD recording, 2MP digital still capture, and a myriad of additional features and functions. In addition to the camera's 32GB built-in flash memory, the HF R11 also records to SD/SDHC memory cards, including Eye-Fi memory cards. And at the heart of the camera you'll find the 2.39MP HD CMOS Image Sensor and Canon's DIGIC DV III Image Processor.

Other core features of the HF R11 include a Genuine Canon 20x HD Video Lens, 20x optical zoom, Dynamic Image Stabilization, and a 2.7" widescreen LCD display. The camcorder also provides you with microphone and headphone terminals. Functions like Smart Auto, Face Detection, and Instant AF (Auto Focus) take the guesswork out of shooting in a variety of situations. And in addition to these beneficial features Quick Start, Pre-Record, and 24p or 30p frame modes give you even more options.

Flash Memory Recording
The VIXIA HF R11 allows you to record up to 12 hours of video to a 32GB internal flash drive or to a removable SD memory card. With Relay Recording, the camcorder automatically switches video recording from the internal drive to the SD memory card when the memory becomes full. There's no need to worry about running out of recording time during a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime shot. You'll also have the flexibility of copying video from your VIXIA HF R11's internal drive to the removable SD memory card. That makes it easy to insert the card into your computer or HDTV's card reader and view your recorded footage immediately.

The advantages of flash memory go beyond the added recording time. You'll also appreciate the quick response time, because there are no moving parts. In addition, when you review, you'll have quick access to your footage. Another plus is the VIXIA HF R11's low power consumption rate, allowing your battery to last longer. And if your HF R11 happens to slip, or you accidentally knock it against something, you'll be happy to know that flash memory makes your camcorder more shock-resistant than other recording storage systems. It also minimizes the chance of data loss if there is damage to your recording media or to the moving parts found in other camcorders 1

Stunning HD Image Quality
A Genuine Canon 20x HD Video Lens delivers excellent image quality, while the Canon Exclusive 2.39MP HD CMOS Image Sensor captures video at 1920 x 1080 resolution and photos with astonishing detail, while the Canon Exclusive DIGIC DV III Image Processor provides impressive color and imaging performance, with enhanced reproduction of difficult to capture purple and blue tones
2.7" Widescreen LCD Display
The 2.7" LCD on the HF R11 lets you see more of what your camcorder is recording. The screen delivers bright, clear detail and the widescreen format means there's no need to imagine what your final image will look like on your widescreen television because it's not squeezed into a small space while you're shooting. What you see will be what you get
Dynamic Image Stabilization
With the Canon HF R11, you can be sure that even on the move your video will be smooth and steady. Dynamic IS provides continuous adjustment throughout the entire zoom range to correct a broader range of motion. In comparison to conventional electronic image stabilization systems, extra compensation is applied at wide-angle focal lengths to eliminate unwanted vibration that is common when walking
Built-In Digital Camera
The VIXIA HF R11, in addition to being a camcorder, is also a digital camera. The VIXIA HF R11's Dual Shot makes it easier than ever to capture both video and photos. Shoot up to 3 frames per second in the Continuous Mode, or a blazing 5 frames per second in the High Speed Continuous Mode. The versatile VIXIA HF R11 even lets you capture a still image from an already recorded movie. While playing the movie in your camcorder, simply press the photo button to capture a 1920 x 1080 photo onto an SD card or to internal memory. Additionally, the VIXIA HF R11 allows you to capture 30 photos from one second of video. And in addition to all that your VIXIA HF R11's built-in flash lets you capture superb photos indoors and in low light conditions, and also features red-eye reduction
Auto Intelligent Auto Focus
Auto Intelligent Auto Focus, AiAF, ensures sharp images and gives creative flexibility. Even when your subject isn't in the center of the frame, the VIXIA HF R11's 9-Point AiAF will automatically select from 9 metering frames on the screen to help bring images into sharp focus
Selectable Metering Patterns
For optimal still image exposure, the VIXIA HF R11 offers selectable metering patterns: Evaluative, Center-Weighted Average, and Spot
AE Bracketing Feature
The AE Bracketing feature of the VIXIA HF R11 automatically takes three versions of the shot, with 'dark,' 'normal' and 'light' settings in ½ exposure steps so you may choose the one that best suits you
Histogram Display
For the advanced digital photographer, the VIXIA HF R11 comes with a Histogram Display - a feature found in Canon's line of digital SLR cameras. The display allows you to see the brightness information of your still images, so you can adjust your exposures as you shoot
Smart Auto
Smart Auto makes shooting great video easy. Using the power of Canon's DIGIC DV III Image Processor, the VIXIA HF R11 intelligently detects and analyzes faces, brightness, color, distance, and movement, then automatically selects the best settings for the scene
Genuine Canon Face Detection
The same Face Detection technology used in Canon digital cameras is available in the VIXIA HF R11 high definition camcorder. Up to 35 faces can be tracked automatically, ensuring razor-sharp focus and natural, accurate exposure. Of the faces tracked, 9 detection frames can be displayed at one time. The system is in fact so smart that it will recognize faces turned downwards or sideways.

In addition, a specific face may be selected as the main subject for continuous tracking. This feature can be used to search for clips featuring that specific subject's face. In search and playback, use of the Face Index will display frames with the chosen face as a thumbnail in each shot in which it appears. The selected face can be linked as a timeline to further identify footage containing that subject

Advanced Video Snapshot
Advanced Video Snapshot allows you to capture the highlights of your adventures with the same ease as taking photos. Simply record a series of short video clips - or select your favorite clips while in Playback Mode - and blend in your favorite background music to create an exciting movie that will grab everyone's attention. This version of Advanced Video Snapshot allows selectable recording time (2, 4, or 8 seconds). Additionally, audio from an external source such as an MP3 player can be played along with the Snapshot movie, and playback can be controlled from that source
Easy Web Sharing
HD-to-SD Downconversion allows you to convert recorded high definition video to standard definition files while safely preserving the original HD video. These standard definition files make it even more convenient to edit, share video online, or create a DVD. The downconverted video can be transferred to your computer via traditional methods - i.e. USB connection, card slot - or wirelessly to sharing sites with an Eye-Fi SD memory card
Eye-Fi SD Memory Card Compatible
The VIXIA HF R11 is compatible with the Eye-Fi SD Memory Card. It's possible to wirelessly transfer your down-converted video and photos to your computer, or upload them directly to online sharing sites in a few simple steps. Insert an Eye-Fi SD Memory Card into the SD card slot on the camcorder, configure your computer to select the target site (e.g., Facebook, YouTube, Shutterfly, Flickr) and you're ready to share your standard definition files with family, friends, and the world 2
24p & 30p Frame Modes
24p Cinema Mode enables all aspiring moviemakers to achieve a professional "film-look." You can change the camcorder's frame capture rate to 24p (recorded at 60i), which provides the appearance of the same frame rate as movie film. In addition, you can use the VIXIA HF R11's CINE setting, which changes the color and tonal characteristics, evoking the look and feel of a movie shown in a theater. For added flexibility, these settings can be used together or independently.

In addition to the standard interlaced video frame rate of 60i, you may choose to set the VIXIA HF R11 to capture video in 30p Progressive Mode, (30 progressive frames, recorded at 60i) which is particularly useful for footage to be used on the Internet. Excellent for action and sports shots, this setting gives enhanced quality to still images captured after recording

Terminals
To maximize the usefulness and versatility of the VIXIA HF R11, you'll find a range of terminals to extend the capabilities of your camcorder. Easy, one-cable connectivity to your HDTV is achieved through the VIXIA HF R11's HDMI Terminal which also supports CEC and x.v.Color. A Microphone terminal with manual audio level control and Headphone terminal provide audio flexibility
Pre-Record
The Pre-record feature places your HF R11 in a stand-by "pre-roll" mode. With this feature the camcorder continuously records three seconds of video to memory before you even press the record button. When you start recording, the additional video is recorded too
Quick Start
With Quick Start, you'll never miss a quickly unfolding shot again. When the HF R11 is in Camera Mode and the LCD panel is closed, it is placed in standby. When the action starts, open the LCD panel and you'll begin recording in less than one second. You'll also help extend your battery life as compared to leaving the camcorder in regular recording mode

    Canon 4383B004AA reviews

VIXIA HF R11 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder (Black) is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Clicking noise picked up by internal mic The camera itself is very easy to use and intuitive; however, I found that the audio picks up the focusing mechanism sounds. This cannot be hidden even when using the built in audio filters set to maximum or manual mic levels. To test this, you can take it to a quiet room and you will hear a lot of background clicking when the camera is focusing... Overall, for the price it is a good camera with a lot of features; however, the audio is problematic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon Camcorder This flash camcorder is one of the easiest to operate. It takes great still photos, and awesome HD videos. It's small and compact, yet you would have no problem holding on to it. The 20X optical zoom brings your photos and videos close up. With the built-in 32gb flash drive, and additional SDHC slot, you will not run out of space any time soon. Having only recently bought it, I can't say anything bad about this camcorder.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Camera, Poor Software Excellent camera, but the software is not user friendly and the manual is far from helpful. I am still debating whether to return it. I only wanted to use it to film my high schooler's football games and then transfer them, along with some earlier files recorded on an earlier camcorder model that had been converted to usable files, onto a DVD. The task was onerous and far from successful. The descriptions in the manual didn't comport with what we encountered.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth the money, I would buy again. Used the camera to film loud live stage music and was very impressed with the sharpness, color clairity and sound reproduction. Found that using the Cine mode was the best setting. Auto is not bad, but switches between recording programs and you can see when it changes in the recording. Camera was able to handle loud sound without distorting in the recording. Had Mic Attenuator set on. Some of the instructions are a bit vague in the guide. This was an upgrade from a large VHS camcorder for me, so I may be more excited about it than those who upgrade more often. Internal mic very sensative and picks up background noise easily. Love the audio level meter option and the external mic jack. It is incredible that such a small device can record in such great video and audio quality. Can not comment on battery length since I do not use that often.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Will wait for better technology I bought this kit at my local ... for $.I currently use a very good Panasonic 3CCD miniDV SD video camera and an iPhone4 for 720p video. This would have to be better than both.I only use iMovie ('10) on a Mac and didn't even bother with the bundled software. Therefore, the following are my observations upon using this camera:* poor low-light performance, lots of noise* poor optical image stabilization* poor image quality for motion, lots of jagged edges* default bit rate set quite medium (change to high)* default video quality set to medium (change to high)* default video size set to 1600x1200, (change to 1280x1080)* default frame rate set to 60i, not 24p or 30p* setting camera to frame rate modes 24p or 30p disables photo feature* default JPG compression level set to medium (change to low)* iMovie must convert AVCHD to QuickTime, a very slow process, even on a quad-core Mac* AVCHD .MTS files are 1/5 the size of QuickTime .MOV* The larger .MOV files are a challenge to play off of external drives to their much higher bit rate* VLC can be used to play .MTS files directly* rated battery life is only 45m* keeping footage presents dilemma, keep AVCHD files, QuickTime, or both? lots of storage space required, no tape backup* video quality of iPhone4, even though only 720p, is better. In summary, this camera provides worse video quality than my iPhone4. The optical image stabilization, the one thing that could be a significant benefit, is so weak as to barely be useful.I've returned the camera and will wait another year or two for better technology at this price point.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good But Not Easy To Use If you are looking for a digital camcorder you can pick up and use successfully without opening the book, stop reading and look for a simpler model. But if you are welling to invest a lot of time in learning the ins and outs you will be rewarded. I just returned from two months in Africa, visiting friends and churches. No large animals though. The camera was good for casual gatherings and for large LOUD church services. It was easy to hold over my head for shots of groups. It was small enough to slip into the pocket of cargo pants. These are real plus features. A better mike would be good, but you do have control over the level of the sound which is a real plus. The light level was easily adjusted, since black faces require a LOT more light. The battery dies pretty fast but I had an extra one which saved the day on several occasions. A Printed instruction manual would have been nice. I printed out part of the one that came on a disk. I should have printed it all out. The biggest pain is getting the pictures off the camera onto the computer. You must install special software on your computer and then follow the instructions to the letter. The alternative is to copy the file to the memory card and then put that directly into the computer. The amount of video you can take with this thing is amazing. I took extra memory cards with me but never came even close to filling up the cards I had.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Solid little camera This is the second R11 that I have purchased. The weakest point is the awkward thumb navigation tool in the fold out monitor. This has been replaced with touch screen in the replacement model

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor in low light . Bad Battery life.... Bought one for our trip to Rome. Not satisfied with the battery life and shooting in low light. Returned the camcorder after our trip. It was hard to learn the functions at first but got a hang of it after a while. I would not recommend this canon even though I like and had other canons.
