Sigma 105mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

The Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS Macro Lens for Sony Cameras delivers superb, distortion-free images throughout its broad focus range, from infinity telephoto to life-size (1:1) macro, as close as 12.2" (31 cm) without accessories. A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and one high refractive index SLD lens provide excellent correction for all types of aberration and distortion. Its non-rotating front lens group makes it easier to work with polarizing filters. A focus limiter helps divide the broad focus range into more manageable chunks.

The "focus-free" mechanical design allows the lens to autofocus without any interference from the manual focus ring, making it easy to hold the lens without affecting the speed or normal operation of the autofocus function. Rugged mechanical construction also makes it durable enough for even the heaviest use required by professional photographers. This is an ideal lens for a wide variety of applications from nature photography to portraiture.

The improved DG lens design for this lens corrects for various aberrations. This macro lens is specially coated to get the best color balance while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras. Sigma's own proprietary OS (Optical Stabilizer) system enables handheld close-up photography.

Close focus capability of 12.2" (31 cm)
Optical Stabilization (OS) enables handheld close-up photography
Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces ghosting caused by reflections from the surface of digital image sensors
Dual Focus (DF) makes the lens easier to hand hold during AF

    Sigma 105mm f/2.8 reviews

105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS Macro Lens for Sony Cameras is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One great lens I recently purchased a 105 mm f/2.8 Sigma EX DG OS macro lens for my Sony cameras and although I have only had limited opportunities so far to use it, I love it. It's a fast, lightweight medium telephoto lens, ideal for shooting indoors in environments such as gymnasiums and other large halls. It's a great complement to my 28-75 mm f/2.8 Sony lens, which I use on nearly every shoot, The Sigma lens gives me that extra reach that comes in handy when the 28-75 isn't quite enough and my 300 mm f/2.8 is too much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this Lens! I use my Macro lens on my A77 II so the effective magnification is closer to 150mm and the images are incredible. Luscious bokeh. Incredibly sharp. Why's I wait so long???

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Helped me take the next step I use it mostly outdoors for insects, small flowers, dew drops, frost etc. Coming from the old school I always used tripod. Until I tried the Sigma with two levels of image stabilization and focus limits. I have great results handheld at 1/50s. Of course Sony's focus peaking function is very helpful as well. Outstanding colors, bokeh and sharpness. Heavy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My favorite lens by far! I bought this to use with my Sony a200 about 4 years ago. I have used many other types of lenses but this one is my favorite. It produces great results almost every time. The photos attached were taken without using a flash and without a tripod so you can see what this lens is capable of. The only reason I didn't give this lens 5 stars is because the auto focus (motor) broke. I baby my lens and have never dropped or abused it. I always have it in my padded camera case when not in use, so I'm not sure how it broke. I sent it to Sigma to get fixed but they sent it back saying the part they would use to fix it isn't made anymore. :( I have been using manual focus for about a year now. It is still a great lens even without the auto focus, but as you may already know in some situations you NEED auto focus, especially if you use it for video. I have tried using it with my new Sony a77 using the video and it's pretty much pointless. I would recommend this lens if you get the extended warranty. It takes amazing photos!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice lens, but slow focusing I bought this lens mostly for macro photography, and it works great for that purpose. I have tried using it on some sports (children's indoor basketball in fluorescent lighting) and found it to be very slow focusing. It will go through the entire focus range and then stop at a focus point that was almost in focus when it started. This may be more due to my error in trying to use the lens for something it is not suited; I will update this post as I learn more about the lens. The macro pictures that I have taken with this lens are very nice!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens! I purchased this prime lens for my A77II for several reasons. One being the macro, the focal length, number of blades...........blah blah blah. I compared this lens and reviewed several before I decided on this one and I'm glad I did. It takes sharp pictures, is very quiet and is well built. You won't be disappointed!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Will update My first "true " macro lens. Build quality is excellent, focusing very quiet. Slow AF, which is common on this type of lens. Hunts a bit. Probably will use in MF mode mostly Update will follow. Using with A77II.
