The H2n has an unprecedented 5 microphones built in, providing you with 4 selectable recording patterns to choose from. A simple dial on top of the recorder lets you switch between traditional XY stereo, 2-channel surround, 4-channel surround, and a mid-side stereo mode. The mid-side mode allows you to adjust the width of your stereo field for terrific flexibility. When recording in RAW mode, you can even adjust the field after you've made a recording.

The H2n records to widely-available SD and SDHC flash memory cards, and supports capacities up to 32GB. When using a 32GB card, you can capture up to 50 hours of CD-quality WAV files, or up to 555 hours of stereo 128kbps MP3 files. An integrated reference speaker makes it easy to review your recordings to make sure everything has been captured properly. The streamlined and intuitive interface puts critical controls right at your fingertips. The large 1.8" backlit LCD display makes it easy to navigate through system menus and monitor audio levels. The analog-type mic gain wheel lets you make precise adjustments on-the-fly.

If you'd like to connect external equipment, the H2n provides you with a 3.5mm mic/line input, allowing you to hook up your favorite microphones, instruments, and other sound sources. A 3.5mm headphone/line output makes it easy to connect headphones, portable speakers, and other devices. A remote jack lets you connect the optional wired remote to start, stop, and pause recordings, as well as add marks. It also reduces handling noise for the cleanest possible recordings. A high-speed USB 2.0 port lets you transfer recordings to your Mac or PC. You can even use the H2n as a live USB mic, terrific for VoIP chats and podcasting. An activation card for Steinberg's WaveLab LE 7 software is included, and once downloaded, it will give you audio editing and mastering tools to help you turn your recordings into finished masterpieces.

The H2n offers a number of versatile powering options. It offers over 20 hours of continuous operation on a pair of standard AA alkaline batteries. It can also be operated via USB bus power, or an AC adapter (sold separately). In the event of battery failure or accidental power loss, your recordings won't be lost. A data recovery function will automatically restore you data the next time the recorder is powered on, so you don't lose one-of-a-kind audio moments. Other features of the H2n include a lo-cut filter, a compressor/limiter, auto gain, pre-rec, auto-rec, a tuner and metronome, variable speed playback, key control, A-B repeat, file dividing, normalize, MP3 post-encode, marker, and surround mixer to give you useful tools for a variety of applications.

Compact Design
The compact design fits in the palm of your hand and can be taken practically anywhere. This makes it ideal for film and broadcast applications, as well as journalism, podcasting, musical performances and rehearsals, and much more
5 Internal Microphones
The H2n has 5 high-quality mic capsules, more than any other portable recorder. This unique 5-mic design enables the H2n to record with 4 selectable patterns
4 Selectable Recording Patterns
A simple dial on top of the recorder lets you switch between traditional XY stereo, 2-channel surround, 4-channel surround, and a mid-side stereo mode
Mid-Side Stereo Recording
The mid-side mode allows you to adjust the width of your stereo field for terrific flexibility, setting the perfect amount of ambient/surrounding noise. Commonly used in film and broadcast, mid-side recording combines a uni-directional mid mic that captures sound directly in front of you and a bi-directional side mic that captures sound from your left and right. By increasing or decreasing the level of the side mic, you can control the width of the stereo field. When recording in RAW mode, you can even adjust the field after you've made a recording
XY Stereo Recording
The 90° XY stereo condenser mics are arranged with the left and right mic capsules on the same axis to ensure perfect localization and eliminate phase shifting. This provides accurate depth and imaging for terrific stereo recordings
2-Channel and 4-Channel Surround
By using the mid-side and XY mics together, you can create 360° surround sound recordings in either 2-channel or 4-channel mode
SD/SDHC Recording
The H2n records to widely-available SD and SDHC flash memory cards, and supports capacities up to 32GB.
Multiple File Formats
Depending on your needs, you can record uncompressed WAV files at up to 24-bit/96kHz or compressed MP3 files at up to 320kbps in order to fit more hours of data on your memory card. Zoom H2n reviews

H2n Handy Recorder Portable Digital Audio Recorder is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 143.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where have you been all my life I gave up trying to cheaply record myself playing drums after too many decades of recordings that sounded like a tin roof in a sandstorm at the sea shore. Now there are many little recorders that can handle the job but this little Zoom stands out for price and ease of use. I've also used it to record a public event with voice and Tibetan singing bowls and it captured the lowest levels to the highest perfectly right out of the box by pushing a couple of buttons. I look forward to exploring all of the possibilities this versatile, handy recorder offers.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Perhaps 3.5 stars As an owner of the previous version H2 (which I negligently fried with one static discharge from a rug), which was a decent recorder with some quirks, this iteration has improved control ergonomics. Sound quality seems to be excellent although I have not rigorously evaluated yet. One-touch record is nice. Hard to believe, but the battery door is actually worse than the previous model. NO cords or basic pouch/case were provided - really cheap. Glossy plastic finish is not very attractive to me, and has very sharp edges. All negatives aside, if it holds up I will considerate it to be a reasonable albeit expensive purchase - we shall see...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great recorder Great device. Records clear sound, setting can be a little annoying but once set up it works perfectly. Have been using with DSLR video and have attached it to the flash shoe mount. Does not pick up any of the focusing motor or anything. Does a good job at distance recording have tested out to 20+ feet and spoke normally and clearly captured what I was saying and had the gain at about 50%. Minus one star for the settings and the fact that when you charge batteries and have to take them out the time resets when you put them back in.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good product Product is good. Recording is good. Options in how to record: good. One thing that could stand improvement: the access to the SD card. Not a huge deal, but access to the SD was not throughly thought through in the design. The mini tripod that comes with the accessories pack attaches to the bottom of the recorder and the tripod needs to be removed in order to access the SD card. Then the small cover to access the card seems to be an afterthought. Sometimes it's a lttle hard to open it. However, I don't know of any other recorder I would rather have to do what this thing does. The sound quality and recording options in this size recorder: excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! A co-worker let me borrow his original H2 to grab an interview on a red carpet event right on 42nd Street in NYC. I was amazed at how these mics picked up my interview with a band of three people so clearly amidst the crowds, taxis and bus horns. When I went to pick one up for myself I was pleased to see that the H2n had come out, and picked it up right away. It's even better! The biggest improvement over the original H2 is the gain wheel (vs. a lo/mid/hi gain switch). Get the accessory kit with the screw in stick handle if you're going to be in the field with this, as holding the unit itself can cause unwanted noise. Enjoy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great for Surroud! Love this so far!! I haven't had a ton of time with it yet, but primarily bought it to record in full surround when we are traveling. The compact size of this is great and allows for easy transit which is crucial on my trips. But having the ability to record in full surround is awesome! I can't wait to make recordings of the amazing sounds and pristine noises of the jungle in Borneo this summer! I've taking audio recordings on my phone before in other jungle settings and use it for white noise every night. Being able to record in full surround and mix that audio in to the videos I produce after a trip will be amazing!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Useful, but lacking key feature I purchased this in order to be able to avoid using a wireless mic. I also wanted a simpler way to capture audio from a DJ or auditorium sound board. The built in microphones work reasonably well, although they are certainly not top-shelf. However, they are adequate for my purposes. The menu system is easy to understand and navigate, and the product is easy to use. However, there are two deficiencies that keep me from giving this product top marks or from recommending it to others. Both have been mentioned in other reviews. First, the line in cannot be used for line level inputs. However, it is not clear exactly what is going on. It appears as though there is some sort of sensing circuit, because when presented with a line-level signal, the audio levels are not completely pegged as they would be if this input was truly just a microphone input. However, the level adjustment being made is not sufficient and therefore the input level must either be reduced substantially from normal levels, thus increase noise, or you must introduce a small amount of attenuation. I think I will still be able to use this to capture audio from a soundboard, but the audio will not be quite as good as it could be because of this level issue. The second issue is that you have to use full gain in order to get reasonable volume from the built-in mic. This seems like a major defect, but others have noted this same issue. Finally, the construction quality certainly is not up to what I am used to with even consumer microphones and cameras. It seems lightweight and not entirely solid. I'm pretty careful, and I did purchase the accessory kit which includes an excellent protective case

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great Concept but quality and support fail! I used the H2N for 4 months and was happy with the recording quality, it suited my needs very well. Then the display started behaving erratically. I sent the unit in for warranty repair and am still waiting 4 months later with no response from the manufacturer!
