Formatt Hitech HT85GKIT6 overview

  • 1Description

The 85mm Graduated Neutral Density Kit 6 from Hitech has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. This kit contains a 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 Graduated Neutral Density filter. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. A Graduated ND filter appears gray and reduces the amount of light reaching either the sensor of a digital camera or the film plane of a traditional film camera. It is clear at the bottom with a gradual transition to darker gray at the top. Primarily, this filter is used to control exposure when shooting bright landscapes where your horizon line displays a great exposure difference between sky and foreground and you need to balance them out for a pleasing exposure.

A Graduated Neutral Density filter is also used to create some unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of the rippling water of a waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. Since it allows the use of slower shutter speeds in bright light, it becomes possible to create these special effects that would normally not be possible to capture without the filter. And since it can also help to control your depth of field, it permits you to shoot at wider apertures. Ultimately, its value is in helping to prevent bright, overly washed out images shot in bright light. Soft/Hard designation indicates the degree of transition of the filter. Soft edge grads have a smooth transition from clear to ND. Hard edge grads have a more defined hard lined transition and should be used for longer lenses.

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed ISOs, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
Absorbing Cell Technology
The secret to Formatt's consistency in filter design lies in its unique "Absorbing Cell Technology" (A.C.T.); this unique process allows color correct dyes to be applied to optically pure, wafer thin absorbing cells and offers a controllability that ensures the smoothest grad lines and consistent color across the whole filter surface
Hitch filters are manufactured to exacting standards and can be counted on to be consistent filter to filter which means you can change filters mid shot or from day-to-day and still maintain the same exposure
Hitech filters are made by Formatt, a company with three generations of professional filter-making experience produces every filter to the highest technical standards. The finest materials, together with state of-the-art production technology have resulted in a standard of optical excellence unmatched anywhere else

    Formatt Hitech HT85GKIT6 reviews

85mm Graduated Neutral Density Kit 6 is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Value I have used Hitech graduated neutral density filters for years. The 3-filter kit is a good value compared to buying them separately. I prefer them to Cokin because they are 1/4-inch longer to provide more adjustment range. The three-filter kit also comes with a nice cloth pouch, which turned out to be very handy. These filters fit P holders, and since they're smaller than larger pro filters, you may have vignetting problems with wide angle lenses. If you use a Cokin P filter holder, slice off the outer two slots or buy Cokin's single-slot holder. Even then, if you have a protective UV filter, you will likely vignette at around 24mm with a full-frame DSLR. As for any color shift, though I admittedly have never performed any specific tests, never has anything jumped out at me to indicate an off color. Beware that resin filters do easily scratch (sometimes I think they scratch all by themselves!), so long-term usage is limited compared to glass filters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works just like it should Easy way to get a set of grad filters for landscapes. They are filters, they work. No color casts and they haven't scratched yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality with good price Quality is very good, no fog even when encounter with light source. No more reddish color like Cokin filters 121S etc, quality is very good even when 0.3 and 0.9 filters are used together and no reddish color is produced, great value for money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter for the price I have used a friends Lee grad filters and now have these to compare. I could not find a noticeable difference. For the price these are great for me as a serious amature photographer. I highly recommend this set.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great filters These filters help me get much better photos with high contrast. They are completely neutral, so no color distortion. I enjoy them on my sony alpha 6000 and on my old sony alpha 700.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than Cokin P series I have worked with it only ones. It seems better when I used more than one filter at the time. But the magenta color appeared occasionnaly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice ND Filters A good value for the money, easy to use and a great set with 1,2 and 3 stop densities and able to stack them to achieve higher levels.
