The 100mm Graduated Neutral Density Kit 6 from Hitech has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. This kit contains a 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 Graduated Neutral Density filter. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. A Graduated ND filter appears gray and reduces the amount of light reaching either the sensor of a digital camera or the film plane of a traditional film camera. It is clear at the bottom with a gradual transition to darker gray at the top. Primarily, this filter is used to control exposure when shooting bright landscapes where your horizon line displays a great exposure difference between sky and foreground and you need to balance them out for a pleasing exposure.

Formatt Hitech HT150GKIT6 Overview

A Graduated Neutral Density filter is also used to create some unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of the rippling water of a waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. Since it allows the use of slower shutter speeds in bright light, it becomes possible to create these special effects that would normally not be possible to capture without the filter. And since it can also help to control your depth of field, it permits you to shoot at wider apertures. Ultimately, its value is in helping to prevent bright, overly washed out images shot in bright light. Soft/Hard designation indicates the degree of transition of the filter. Soft edge grads have a smooth transition from clear to ND. Hard edge grads have a more defined hard lined transition and should be used for longer lenses.

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses
To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed ISOs, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
Absorbing Cell Technology
The secret to Formatt's consistency in filter design lies in its unique "Absorbing Cell Technology" (A.C.T.); this unique process allows color correct dyes to be applied to optically pure, wafer thin absorbing cells and offers a controllability that ensures the smoothest grad lines and consistent color across the whole filter surface
Hitch filters are manufactured to exacting standards and can be counted on to be consistent filter to filter which means you can change filters mid shot or from day-to-day and still maintain the same exposure
Hitech filters are made by Formatt, a company with three generations of professional filter-making experience produces every filter to the highest technical standards. The finest materials, together with state of-the-art production technology have resulted in a standard of optical excellence unmatched anywhere else

Formatt Hitech HT150GKIT6 Reviews

Good Quality and Price, but beware the resin . . .

As a an avid hobbyist on a budget, I felt this package would be a good compromise between quality and cost.  VERY pleased with the choice so far.  Product arrived in pristine condition - although I noted from a prior review from someone they received a flawed filter.   Am still experimenting (in use with a Nisi V5 filter holder on a Nikon D750).  Excited about the effects - no perceived unnatural warmth or coolness in the tones.  Unfortunately, the photographer behind the camera still seems to be the weak link . . . My only comment (not criticism) is to emphasize that these products are resin, not glass.  While you need to be painfully careful with any filters in terms of scratches, you need to be even more so with this softer substrate.  A good quality filter holder (e.g. Ruggard) is a must - not an option.  In short, as much as I like these, when (not if) they get scratched, I will likely replace them piecemeal with glass filters.  But these are the right place to start.

As good as Lee?

I bought these because B&H struggles to keep the Lee soft edge set of NG filters in stock. Of course about a week after I took deliver of these filters I got a notification that the Lee filters were in stock. I used these filters in Mount Rainer last week and they worked well for me. What I don't like is the cheap plastic case that these filters come in. Buy I already owned a Lee filter holder so this wasn't a big deal for me. I didn't see any color bias unless I had a polarizer on the lens while using these filters.

excellent product, just don't drop them

THese graduated work very well. Even though many photographers are just using bracketed shots, I prefer the control that these filters allow. DEFINITELY buy the protective filter carrying case for $30; the plastic sleeves that the filters come in are useless, and can scratch.

I'm confused. The pictures and specifications indicate these are 100mm X 150mm filters. The answer for, "What comes in the box by 'Manzell L. (Staff) states they are 100mm square. Are they 3 square or rectangular filters?
Asked by: Earl D Allison
The filters are rectangular. This is common with most graduated neutral density filters since you sometimes need to raise or lower the line where the density changes.

question

What comes in the box? The description provided by B&H is limited.
Asked by: Lisa S.
The Formatt Hitech 100mm Graduated Neutral Density Kit 6 comes with the three (3) filters listed under the In The Box tab on the kit's webpage, which include the Formatt Hitech 4 x 4 Soft-Edge 0.3 Graduated Neutral Density Glass Filter, B&H # FOGND.3S44, the Formatt Hitech 4 x 4 Soft-Edge 0.6 Graduated Neutral Density Glass Filter, B&H # FOGND.6S44, and the Formatt Hitech 4 x 4 Soft-Edge 0.9 Graduated Neutral Density Glass Filter, B&H # FOGND.9S44. The filters are designed to fit 4 x 4 /100mm x 100mm filter holders, such as the Formatt Hitech 100mm Aluminum Modular Filter Holder, B&H # FOHTAMHS, or the Cokin Z-PRO Filter Holder (Requires Adapter Ring), B&H # COFHZP. However, as indicated under the In The Box tab, only the three (3) filters are included in the filter kit. You would have to purchase the filter holder and adapter ring for your lens separately, as nothing but the filters are included in the filter kit.
