This innovative mic uses 3D binaural sound recording to recreate the immersive audio we hear when listening to multi-channel surround sound, but audio recorded with the 3D Mic Indie requires only a pair of closely placed speakers, headphones or even ear-buds to experience 360° audio.

The 3D Mic Indie works by using an audio signal modifier system called SHEM. SHEM developers undoubtedly looked at how the military and defense department had experimented with recreating our brains psychoacoustics (how we hear sounds around us). The Mitra 3D Mic Indie owes its ability to recreate the human hearing experience to the algorithms that successfully duplicated the psychoacoustics related to depth and passing sound. The 3D Mic Indie uses SHEM, which puts those algorithms to the test.

The result is a binaural mic that records what appears to sound like full surround sound audio. It basically simulates human hearing by capturing the psychoacoustics and recording it. Plus, this model is designed to attach to your video camera, DSLR camera or digital audio recorder. Since the 3D Mic Indie offers only 3.5 mm phono line connectivity, it's more affordable than its big brother the 3D Mic Pro and is absolutely perfect for anyone looking to add immersive 3D audio to their digital video recordings.

When you listen back to the recorded sound through two closely spaced side by side speakers, headphones or even ear-buds - the listener's brain processes the psychoacoustic information in the recorded sounds and hears the realistic 3D sound as if it was them sitting on the beach listening to the waves break from left to right along the shore.     Rated 4 out of 5 by from remarkable audio impact with live music After reading/listening to a review by Vincent Laforet, I opted to try this device with my new Canon DSLR body. The results are quite exceptional.Clearly the best audio is taken right off the boards via XLR cables - but that is not always an option and it also makes things more complex and less mobile. This version of the device uses a single mini cable for direct input to the DSLR. They DO offer an XLR version.This device requires care level setting as it runs quite hot and also, in my experience, requires inverse equalization in post processing to smooth it out a touch. So it is not simply plug and play unless the desired result is borderline shrill. The manufacturer provides very precise EQ curves depicting what the device imparts, and this makes cleaning the sound up pretty straight forward.What I like most is the overall air, and sense of the audio being just like it was with my having stood there. The impact is quite exceptional.The mic makes my camera body top heavy but as I an using a tripod, mostly, this is not that big a deal. For hand held I believe a monopod at the least is required, if not more exotic measures like a counterbalance/shoulder mount.So what is good: realistic sound field, really wide frequency range, hard-to-define impact of using binaural gear in recordings not typically using same.What is not so good: expensive, somewhat awkward to mount, somewhat heavy if mounted on camera shoe mount.I've used it successfully in live jazz venues and have received very positive feedback as the sound is ultra realistic versus (and I do dig this) simply properly mic'd and recorded. I think each has its place - and for replicating what it sounded like in the audience, this device is pretty darn good.I am an end user and not associated with the product in any manner.
