Rogue Photographic Design ROGUEGELS-U Overview

  • 1Description

The Rogue Gels Universal Lighting Filter Kit (Set of 20) from ExpoImaging makes it easy to bring a more dramatic color sense to all of your photographs. Chose from a variety of Lee filters for reds, yellows, blues, and greens to punch up an image with color, or create mood. Or, use the correction gels to balance your flash to ambient light. Flash coverage area measures 3 x 2.5" (7.6 x 6.3 cm)--total filter length with tabs is 6" (15.2 cm)

Each gel has the LEE name, the gel's measured f/stop loss value, and (when appropriate) the corresponding Kelvin color temperature correction and camera white balance icon, all printed directly onto the gel. Stated f/stop loss values are measured using a Sekonic light meter in a controlled test. These values compare the metered exposure of the bare flash with the metered exposure using the Rogue Gels placed over the flash head.

Large variety of color and correction Lee filters (3 x 2.5" (7.6 x 6.3 cm) coverage area)
Flexible Gel-Band included to attach gel to any shoe mount flash

    Rogue Photographic Design ROGUEGELS-U Reviews

Rogue Gels Universal Lighting Filter Kit (Set of 20) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 128.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth the extra cost There are hundreds of flash colour correction gels out there, so why pick one of the most expensive ones? This one comes with a very well organized case, listing the name of the filter, the colour, and the f/stop light loss from the flash when using the filter. Filters are clearly marked with the f/stop light loss as well. The set of filters also includes a High tech rubber band to attach them to your flash. I would never consider other flash filter systems that need tape to attach them to a $ speedlight.Overall, these are excellent quality filters and well worth the extra cost for the convenience and overall quality that you get.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Special lighting effects with Rogue Gels These gels are so easy to use its amazing they weren't out years ago. Each gel has easily readable info printed on expected f-stop loss and color correction info so there is no guessing. I plan to primarily use these as mood/atmosphere enhancers to add a splash of color in the background etc. All the product literature shows a split rubber band and easily securing the gels. My package came with a wide rubber band that fits very snuggly on my speedlight and it is hard to expand enough to slip the gel under. I may try to split the band myself or just replace it altogether. That does not detract from the product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice, complete gel set Pretty much all the gels you would ever need with your speedlight/flash, along with a simple silicon band to secure them. The gels are generously sized and should work with any medium to large speedlight/flash with a rectangular head. There are clear markings on the gels themselves, so you always know what you're looking at. The only thing I'd like to see changed in the future would be to replace the cardboard dividers between the gels with cardboard folders/pockets. The dividers don't secure the gels, and if you are trying to gel a speedlight/flash outdoors and it's windy you could lose some, or at a minimum get them dirty.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great, needs 2 elastics This is a good product. The colour correction ones are the most useful for bouncing flashes at events. The fun colours are good for background colours for portraits. It's also very hard to keep them organized. My only complaint here is that this product contains so many gels and so few elastics. If it had one more elastic, then you could use two flashes at the same time. If it came with two copies of the most useful correcting gels, that would be even better. But even if not, you could use a 1/2CTO and a full CTO (for example) which would be better in some cases than nothing. Even if you're only using one flash, keeping the second elastic on your backup flash would be convenient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and fast! When shooting weddings I like to match my off-camera speed lights to the ambient light. I have 5 radio controlled speed lights that may have any variety of light modifiers on them. Sometimes I'll use a colored gel for an unusual effect - but mostly I use the CTO, 1/2 CTO, and 1/4 CTO to color the light of my speed lights to match that of the reception location. The gels are kept in place by a fancy rubber-band. I keep 2 rubber-bands on each flash - some of the bands are from Gary Fong accessories, others are those produce bands used to hold bunches of broccoli together! I always have a back-up on each flash incase one snaps or drops. Great for using in soft-boxes and umbrellas. I used to use the Gary Fong amber dome-top when using a Gary Fong, but it caused amber light shooting up with mixed light projecting from the sides because the Fong is still white on the sides. Putting a rogue gel over the light source results in consistent color output from the Gary Fong (the gel gets a little smashed - but they hold-up well). While the price is a little much for something you can make for pennies - I'd rather spend the money and be done with it than hassle making my own gels. These gels come in a small canvas envelope that can fit into any gear bag or even your pocket. I got a pen from Michael's that writes on cloth and wrote GELS on the canvas envelope in white - this way I can see it better in my gear bag (everything in there is black, tough to sort through it in the dark). I did the same for all the other gear sacks that tend to get lost in the dark depths of my main gear bag. Using these gels beats having to carry different colored Sto-Fen diffusers for each flash, now you can just cram one of these gels under the white Sto-Fen diffuser, it saves me some space in my gear bag. I also use the Rogue Flash-bender soft boxes. These gels are a little more difficult with this modifier (I have the ProXL and the Large). Both of these products are a little heavy to mount on the head of a flash & have a tendency to walk about as you set up your light. Having a gel on the flash kind of gets in the way when your attempting to strap one of these bulky modifiers on the flash. But the result is worth the added effort. Keep in mind these gels reduce the light output some, stacking light modifiers isn't without it's drawbacks. I like that Rogue actually prints on each gel the number of stops each gel will reduce your light output. Handy for anticipating flash performance and battery life. I gave this product 5 stars because they are simple and easy to use. Because of this, I carry them with me and use them! Saves me time in post production. I think there's a lot less black and white reception photos in the world thanks to these gels!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these gels Very inexpensive way to create cool images in camera. Also contains color temperature correct gels for those days when your speed light just won't balance with ambient. These gels are the perfect size and placing them on/off a speed light is simple with the included rubber band thingy. The included carry case helps you keep the gels damage free and easily findable in one place. As soon as I saw these gels I went back on B& to order more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally a gel you can really use! Most gel packs for speedlites were manufactured as samples for photographers to evaluate. Consequently, they were roughly the same size and shape as the flash head and had no extra material for an attachment device. Rogue has solved that problem. These gels have flaps that wrap around the head fully covering the flash screen. They also come with a rubber strap to secure the gel in place. The best part is the info about the gel color and how many stops they affect your flash printed right on the gel. Great carrying case too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well put together kit, easy to use. I've just used these a few times, but find the set easy to use on both my SB800 and Lumopro 180. The silicon gel band that holds the gels to the flash head is very convenient and the gels are easy to attach. The filter holder and info printed on the gels make them simple to use and find. I considered buying less expensive products but I'm very pleased with this. It is a great way to start using filters over your flash.

The item pictured features the old band. Has BH updated their stock with the version with the newer band, which is teal and has tabs for easier handling?

We carry the most current version of this product.

Does the rubber band hold the gels tight around an Olympus FL-600R flash, or is the band to big for that flash?
    Asked by: Clark
I have that same flash, and the rubber band works fine. It's not real tight, but it certainly holds the gels in place without any problem.

Can these filters be used with the Gary Fong Collapsible Lightsphere or the Speed Snoot?
    Asked by: Natalie H.
It is a good chance it will not fit well. The band that is used to hold the gel will prevent Gary Fong modifier from fitting correctly and securely.

Will the Expoimaging Rogue Gels fit a Sunpak 522 flash?
    Asked by: Ralph
YES, absolutely. Position the gel over your flashhead, wrap a rubber band (included) around the gel/flashhead, and you're ready to shoot. Look around the internet: There are several tutorials that show how it works -- if you need the help.

Do these filters cover the Canon 600EX-RT speedlite? In the specs, it says the dimension of each filter is 3 x 2.5 , but I don't know if that includes the part of the filter that goes under the band or not. Thanks!
    Asked by: Janina M.
Yes. The area that covers the face of the flash head is actually a tiny bit larger than the 600EX-RT head. This is great because it truly colors all the light blasting out, without any light leaks around the edges of the filter.

Can you use these with the Rogue grid?
    Asked by: Amy P.
You can, as they fit on the flash, then the grid fits on the flash. They make a set especially for the grid.
