Sony Sonnar T* E 24mm f/1.8 ZA Overview

Practically distortion-free and featuring a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture, this Sonnar T* E 24mm f/1.8 ZA Lens from Sony will help APS-C E-mount shooters capture difficult scenes with ease. Offering a 36mm equivalent focal length, this lens is a common choice for street, interiors, landscapes, and general photography. Also, thanks to the use of one extra-low dispersion element, two aspherical elements, and the Zeiss T* coating, shooters will enjoy images free from aberrations and flare. Operation is speedy as well due to the use of a fast and silent linear autofocus motor and an internal focus design, which permits focusing as close as 6.3" for close ups with a 0.25x magnification. Additionally, it has a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth, round bokeh.

Based on the Zeiss Sonnar optical concept, this lens uses a design with eight elements in seven groups that helps achieve the large maximum aperture of f/1.8 while simultaneously reducing flare and improving contrast.
A wide-angle prime designed for APS-C Sony E-mount cameras, this 24mm lens will provide an equivalent focal length of 36mm. It can also be used on full-frame E-mount cameras in APS-C mode.
The f/1.8 maximum aperture allows users to create images with shallow depth of field and work in low-light conditions with relative ease.
Zeiss T* anti-reflective coatings have been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections in order to provide greater image clarity, contrast, and color fidelity.
One extra-low dispersion glass element is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Two aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
A linear autofocus motor and internal focus design provide quick and precise autofocus performance and enables accurate and silent focusing while recording videos.
The advanced optical design permits a minimum focus distance of just 6.3" for a maximum magnification of 0.25x, allowing shooter to capture sharp close ups.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Just bought this two weeks ago and love it. Have been having a great time on the trails with it.

I own the 24 and 55 f1.8’s Sony Zeiss primes and use on an A6500. Both yield spectacular images especially in low light. Amazing bokeh. Both feel great in the hand on my A6500 and body and lenses make for a compact package that travels well. Highly recommend both, as these are all you will need for most everyday photography situations. Note that I am an amateur and use primarily for family and travel.

I wanted to love this lens

I was excited about getting this lens and wanted to love it. I have the A6000, 18-200mm lens and Sony 50mm lens. The 24mm (35mm on full frame) angle of view is my favorite, and I looked forward to having a fast, sharp prime walk-around lens for my A6000. Yes, the images of people were better than the zoom lens but not as great as I thought they would be. Autofocus was slow. Landscape images didn't have the pop I expected from a Zeiss lens at this price. So, I am returning. Many thanks to B&H for their great customer service.

If this had OSS this would be the best lens for sony aps-c.

This lens is perfect. It's missing OSS though which would have made this incredibly worth every penny for use on aps-c. It's crisp and fast. There's little to no distortion. This is so fun to use whether to with autofocus or manual. It is pretty expensive though compared to the 35mm which everyone chooses over this. If you have an aps-c sony camera and don't ever plan on upgrading to a full frame this is worth it. Otherwise, the 35 is a better option.

Excellent choice for a go-to, walk around lens

I've been searching for a prime lens that would give me an angle of view that would work for travel photography for both street and interior use and also for close-up (but not macro) work. This lens is right on the mark for the focal length I was looking for on an crop sensor camera. I test drove it at an arboretum on an overcast day so I could get an idea of how it would perform indoors without flash, hand held. I was very happy with the quality of the photos and the color pop from the flowers was outstanding. The sharpness on the lens I got is excellent and when I processed the raw images in Lightroom, the lens correction was minimal if at all. Wide open gave me a sufficiently shallow depth of field and great bokeh. Smaller apertures were also sharp; may be some lens fall-off at edges but I haven't taken enough photos to know for sure. I use this lens on a Sony A6500. The attached images were shot with Auto ISO, Aperture Mode, no tripod, no flash.

Excellent Color saturation.

My go to prime lens when out being a tourist or in low light situations, it has that something special even though it is not the sharpest on my A6500. It is worth the money I have found as it spends most of the time on the camera while travelling. Photo shot at night with in camera image stacking feature.

Sharp Lens

This is a preliminary review as I haven't been able to make many test shots, but for the ones I have made they were incredibly sharp, corner to corner. Great contrast. Lens is light weight and fits nicely on my A6500. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is that the circular polarizer that came with it is a joke. Took me almost 15 min to get it to screw on. I would imagine regular filters will be fine, but a spinning filter like the polarizer is difficult to grab the lower portion of the filter and get it to screw on. And don't get me started on trying to remove it.
