Telephoto Versatility for APS-C

An ideal complement to many kit zooms, the silver E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS Lens from Sony opens the door to many telephoto perspectives with its 82.5-315mm equivalent focal length range on APS-C-format E-mount cameras. This portrait-length to mid-tele reach is ideal for a range of subjects, from portraits to distant sports and landscapes, and its sleek size also makes it a great travel companion.

Optics and Design

  • Designed for APS-C-format cameras, this 55-210mm lens perfectly complements many kit zooms by providing an 82.5-315mm equivalent focal length range for telephoto applications.
  • A variable f/4.5-6.3 maximum aperture helps keep overall lens size and weight to a minimum.
  • Two extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • Two aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
  • Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Autofocus and Image Stabilization

  • An internal focus mechanism contributes to faster, more responsive autofocus, the minimum focus distance of 3.3', and easier handling as the lens does not change in length during use.
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.

Sony E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS Reviews

Good lens, good price.

I bought the Sony E 55-210mm f / 4.5-6.3 OSS lens for my Sony a6000 camera, which came with the Sony E 16-50 f / 3.5-5.6 PZ OSS kit lens. The first thing I did was to shot to a distant tree including the edge of my window, and then I shot to the edge of my window including the distant tree (img 01). The first thing that struck me was that at 100% magnification of the image, the leaves of the tree appear acceptably sharp, and at the edge of the window I did not find a significant color fringing in the area of highest contrast. Increasing that area of contrast to 300% (image 02) continued to appear free of chromatic distortion. Ok, I decided to photograph the same graph paper, with numbers written on it, with the two lenses from the starter kit. Light conditions: Tungsten light. Shutter speed, 1/4 second F / 8 aperture ISO100 With the Sony E 55-210mm f / 4.5-6.3 OSS I shot at 190mm focal length. With the Sony E 16-50 f / 3.5-5.6 PZ OSS I shot at 50mm focal length (getting closer to the paper). Both lenses have a protective Tiffen UV filter. In the center of the image the difference in sharpness is only apparent by looking closely at the texture of the paper and a bit at the numbers written. But at the edges of the image the difference in sharpness is more obvious. The Sony E 55-210mm is noticeably sharper than the Sony E 16-50. For nearly $ 600 between the two lenses, its performance meets the needs of most wearers. For a professional entry level, they are borderline acceptable at a great price.

Used this for photojournalism.

I used this for photojournalism paired with a Sony a6000. This lens gave me very sharp results stopped down to 6.3 for a constant aperture. With the body often shooting at 11fps, the OSS is a must and made the most of all conditions. I would say I found it more convenient to pick up and shoot with vs. my full frame 70-200 2.8, and rivaled the image in many ways. I only wish Sony would make a wider-end low-aperture lens like this one for all-in-one shooting.

Arrived quicker that projected. Zoom works smoothly; focusses quickly. But, weather has been too cold to really work it out.

Unfortunately, teleconverters are not compatible with lenses with a focal length shorter than 70mm.

is it good for astrophotography? and Sony a3500
Asked by: osama
The Sony E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS Lens (Silver) (B&H# SO55210455) will indeed fit and work perfectly with the Sony a3000, Sony a3500, and Sony a6XXX series cameras. Ideal usages as far as astrophotography would be concerned would be to take star trail photos or shots of (relatively) bright objects such as the moon. If you want to take photos with stars appearing brightly and clearly then you'll either need to set your ISO very high and/or use a long shutter speed for best results with this lens. That would result in star trails. Be sure you have "Long Exposure NR" set to "On" to reduce shot noise. If you want a faster lens to gather more light so you can use shorter shutter speeds, this is the top pick of astrophotographers shooting with Sony mirrorless APS-C cameras: Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E (B&H# SI1614S) https://bhpho.to/3Aslbk3
