Sony DT 16-50mm f/2.8 SSM Overview
Covering wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives, this standard 16-50mm zoom is designed for APS-C format A-mount cameras, where it will provide a versatile 24-75mm equivalent focal length range.
A constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
Three extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Two aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
A Super Sonic wave Motor (SSM) autofocus system provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and contributes to more natural and intuitive manual focus control. The internal focusing design also helps achieve a minimum focus distance of 11.8".
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Dose this lens work well with old Minolta Maxxum ...
Dose this lens work well with old Minolta Maxxum 7 body?
Good question for not all combinations work. However, in this instance yes this lens will work on your camera. The trick is the camera must have the same number of contacts, 8 in all, as the lens. The Minolta Maxxum 7 does have 8 contacts so it will work with that lens Sony DT 16-50mm f/2.8 SSM Lens.

question
A6000
Hi Bryan, this lens does work with Sony A6000 but with some restrictions. First you need the A-mount to E-mount adapter model LA-EA3 or LA-EA4.
For LA-EA3: Available with a Mount Adaptor.
(1)The SteadyShot is not supported.
(2) Operation sound of the diaphragm is recorded with the internal microphone.
(3) The Photo Creativity function does not work.
(4) Outside the A (Aperture priority), S (Shutter priority), and M (Manual) modes, the shutter speed and the aperture can not be adjusted during the movie recording.
(5) The [Lens Comp] (Lens Compensation) function does not work.
(6) The "Focal plane phase detection AF" function does not work.
(7) Autofocus function (AF-S (single AF)) can be used. * With an A-mount lens attached, the autofocus speed will be slower than when an E-mount lens is attached. (It takes approximately 2 to 7 seconds (based on Sony’s measurement standard). It may vary depending on the subjects or brightness of the shooting environments.)
(8)* When you record movies with autofocus, the operating noise of the lens may be recorded.
(9) If you attach the [A-mount lens] using the Mount Adaptor, MF assist function does not work automatically when you turn the focus ring. You can enlarge the image by selecting [Focus Magnifier] function or [MF Assist] function to any key in the "Custom Key Settings".
For LA-EA4: Available with a Mount Adaptor.
(1) The SteadyShot is not supported.
(2) Operation sound of the diaphragm is recorded with the internal microphone.
(3) The Photo Creativity function does not work.
(4) The [Lens Comp] (Lens Compensation) function does not work.
(5) If you use MF (Manual Focus) in the A (Aperture priority), S (Shutter priority), or M (Manual) mode, the shutter speed and the aperture can be adjusted during the movie recording.
(6) If you use AF (Autofocus), the aperture will be fixed to F3.5, or the largest aperture if the lens' largest aperture is smaller than F3.5, during the movie recording.
(7) When you record movies with autofocus, the operating noise of the lens may be recorded.
(8) The "Focal plane phase detection AF" function does not work.
(9) The "EYE AF" function does not work.
(10) If you attach the [A-mount lens] using the Mount Adaptor, MF assist function does not work automatically when you turn the focus ring. You can enlarge the image by selecting [Focus Magnifier] function or [MF Assist] function to any key in the "Custom Key Settings".]

question
How much better is this than the Sony standard 18-135mm 3.5/F?? I'm looking for a new lens for my Sony alpha a77 ii
thats a subjective question. This lens wont be as telephoto as the f/3.5, but it will be brighter.

question
What is considered to be the optimum aperture for this lense
The sweet spot for a lens tends to be a couple stops down from the max aperture. For the Sony 16-50mm f/2.8, it should be roughly f/5.6.

No, this is an APS-C lens. Sony's A-mount DT lenses are all APS-C designs.
