B+W 403 overview

  • 1Description

The B+W 52mm UV Black (403) Filter is a specialized filter used to block visible light while allowing UV A radiation (320-385nm) to pass through. This filter differs significantly to the more well known UV filter, which does the opposite by blocking UV radiation. The UV Black filter visibly appears completely black and is used in combination with specially sensitized films for applications such as forensic photography, material research, and fluorescence photography. Depending on the illumination and materials being used, the filter factor ranges from 8 to 20 (3 to 4.3 stops).

B+W filters are constructed from high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. They feature a brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

Used for ultraviolet reflection photography in forensics or material research applications.
Can be used as a filter for a UV-emitter when working in fluorescence photography.
Depending on applications and materials being used, the filter factor ranges from 8 to 20 (3 to 4.3 stops).
Constructed from high quality Schott glass for optical clarity.
Brass filter ring helps to prevent jamming and provides additional strength.

    B+W 403 reviews

52mm UV Black (403) Filter is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from high quality, works as it should great quality filter. I specialize in the scientific and other technical areas of photography. You should have an idea of what this filter does before you buy it. It is a specialized filter for specific purposes. I use it with a full spectrum converted camera. For anyone having issues with the heavy IR contamination in digital, try adding a hot mirror in combination to block some of that IR and of course using UV studio lights and even better add woodsglass filter to the UV light sources to maximize your UV isolation in digital. If you are not in a studio setting and using it for fun it gives wild effects with a converted camera. Your lens and sensor illumination/aberations characteristics will play a huge part with the UV part of the transmission. test all of your lenses at all focal lengths and at several different f/stops.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Interesting photography techniques I use this filter with my Olympus 5050Z. I don't get true UV because I haven't modified the camera, but I am getting really interesting Infrared contamination. With my Hoya R72, I only get black and white, or false color when I process it in in Photoshop. With the B+W 403, I get the infrared effects of white foliage, combined with blue sky and water. The contrast between the sky and water and the black and white of everything else makes a gorgeous photograph after tinkering a while in Photoshop. So far, the filter doesn't seem to work on my new Cannon Rebel XSI. It may be because I haven't experimented much yet, but not all cameras work with either UV or Infrared. Check your camera for IR or UV sensitivity before buying one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from have a lot of fun with UV photography I got what I expected. Good construction. I measured the transmission spectrum of this filter. Besides the UV peak between 320-380nm, there is a significant IR peak from 700-800 nm. So if you wish to take pure UV photo, watch out the contamination of IR light, which is strong in sunshine. Ideally used with dedicated UV light source.
