FiiO D5 overview

  • 1Description

The Fiio D5 Coaxial / USB Decoder connects to a computer via a USB connector, and functions as both, an external sound card, as well as a dual microphone input interface. It is suitable for high fidelity audio playback, voice recordings and network voice applications. The D5 Decoder features a coaxial output that provides output stereo PCM digital audio, and can be connected to an external DAC or any other coaxial audio device. In addition, it comes with a 3.5mm output for connecting your headphones.

With the stereo line out, the device can be directly connected to an amplifier or speaker. Moreover, the line out is automatically muted once headphones are connected. The decoder draws power via the USB connector itself and hence does not need any external power cabling.

    FiiO D5 reviews

D5 Coaxial / USB Decoder is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good output, problematic input I have a decent analog headset with independent mic and headphone jacks that I was trying to use with a Mac Pro, and found that using a Y-adapter to combine them into a 4-contact plug was unreliable at best. This device seems like the perfect solution, but for the mic input: there seems to be some kind of impedance issue, because the mic levels are ridiculously low. This might be because it has two mic inputs? Output-wise, the unit is fine... the sound quality is decent, the hardware volume/mute buttons all seem to work, notwithstanding some unmute weirdness. If my device could get a decent output signal from my mic, it would be 5-star, but as it is, 3.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great! Easy to use! I bought this product as gift for my dad. He wanted to use it to link a cassette tape player to his laptop in order to record audio from the cassette to the laptop. This product works awesomely to allow him to do that and was not at all complicated to understand how to use. Score!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from very nice unit with problems I was looking for a usb microphone input device for voice overs and the the D5 has two mic inputs, usb in/out and a headphone jack, which would make this a great universal device. the build quality is awesome too, as the enclosure is made from metal, which was a nice surprise. unfortunately the mic input sound level was fairly low and had to be amplified in software, which caused a hissing noise... the headphone sound wasn't as clean either. I returned this item and purchased a Griffin iMic instead

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does exactly what I wanted and then some I wanted to get rid of the AC-powered optical-to-coax digital audio converter I used with my Mac mini, and discovered this. No more need for an adapter, supported out of the box with no drivers, and I discovered it simultaneously outputs to both digital audio and the headphone jack, which I have hooked up to the monitor speakers. Furthermore, the volume/mute controls affect the headphone output, and not the digital audio, which is perfect for my application.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cheap and good! Sound quality excellent via coaxial output. I don't see a way to sync it to an external word clock though. That could be improved. It meets my needs.
