Sirui K-40X Overview

The Sirui K-40X Ball Head is an extremely sturdy head with control knobs for pan, tilt, and tension, plus an Arca-style clamp for the included quick-release plate. The pan, tilt, and quick-release knobs are all separate, while the tension knob is integrated into the ball-locking (tilt) knob. The head tilts 90° for portrait orientation. There's also a video pin on the plate to keep camcorders from twisting.

The interior ball locking of the K-40X head has a sphere tolerance of 0.01mm, and it's equipped with an orientation-memory locking dial. This helps yield a high load capacity of 77 lb. The quick-release clamp features a secondary release button that prevents any inadvertent disengagement of the camera/plate from the clamp, thereby adding to the head's overall security and stability. The Arca-style platform conforms to standard sizes, so you can use compatible plates from other manufacturers.

The three control knobs allow a photographer to exercise extremely fine control over the orientation of the camera, whether it's a DSLR, 35mm, medium-format camera, or even a camcorder. Pan, for instance, can be adjusted while the tilt stays locked, enabling precise movement that's measurable – there are degree markers at the panning base for panoramic photography.

The K-40X is CNC-machined from an aircraft-grade aluminum alloy and anodized with an oxidation treatment that ensures a durable, high-quality finish.

Two bubble levels (horizontal and vertical) on the quick-release platform ensure that your framing hews to the horizon in either portrait or landscape orientation

Quick-release plate is aluminum alloy with a rubberized surface

Sirui K-40X Reviews

For my Manfrotto 3021BN tripod

I was very limited with my old 3437 head that came with my Manfrotto tripod. This Sirui K-40X ball head was in my price range, sturdy and allowed for more options such as using my L-bracket & Macro Rail. I have used it now for 8 years and I still love it. The only nitpicky thing I could say is that occasionally the main locking knob can get a little tight, but once I play with it for a moment it goes away. It is very capable holding up my Nikon D4 with its 28-300mm lens and any other little odds & ends I add on.

Top notch ball head

I wanted something to travel with that was a lighter than my regular fluid head. I needed something that could handle at least 17 lbs. This did the job very well. Sturdier than I expected, quite well made, moves easily, and locks down well. It's a little heavier than I expected it would be, but saves some weight and works really well.

The Sirui K-40X Ball Head is larger and heavier than I expected. So far I have used it with a Manfrotto 055 carbon tripod holding the Canon R5 with battery grip and 15-35, 24-70 lenses. I holds the camera very snug. No drooping or anything like that. The screw in knobs tighten down very well and can be loosened with out strain.. The only drawback to the head is the bubble level. You have to balance using the levels BEFORE you put the body on.

Does just what it should

This is my second K-40 X ball head. I bought both because the load on my old ones was just too much for a 600mm lens, plus 1.4 extender, plus DSLR camera with battery grip. They both work well alone and with a Wemberly Sidekick. I'd buy it again but I only need two.

I've used this for a year and after that time the rubber on the knob started slipping and the ball head started locking up. I thought it was time to replace it. But first, I thought maybe I could fix it. All it took was for me to remove the rubber and clean underneath. Then I readjusted the tension and cleaned all around the ball itself. Feels like new again.

Reding angle of rotation is very bad. Stable even panorama

I have 3 Sirui heads and one tripod for 3 years. I wish I knew RRS products before Sirui. A: Advantage 1- very stable in rotation of 360 degree 2- With a good balancer and very good tripod can be used for panorama even 2 or 3 lavel. 3- Price is very good B- Disadvantage 1- Very heavy 2- Calibration of the angle of rotation is very bad reading is impossible 3- Level control knob and luck is very bad 4- When you want to use it you have to adjust the reading angle before installing the camera Conclusion: I just use it whenever I have no choice

Good, but heavier than expected

I do a lot of travel with video gear and always looking for a way to reduce weight. I thought a ball head would be useful to stand in for my heavy hydraulic head, but it needed to be strong enough to hold a prompter along with the camera, monitor, etc... This is amazingly sturdy for what it is, but it's also pretty heavy, though not as heavy as my usual head. If you want a ball head, this is a very good value. If you're looking to lighten up your kit, you might want to get the smaller one.

Beefy Ballhead

My only knock is that it isn't super-smooth, but it is a great ball head for the cost. It does everything I want a ball head to do and it does most of it really well. Not ground-breaking but an excellent value, especially for long lenses and weighty cameras.

Will this head support large camera and lens ...

Will this head support large camera and lens combos including a Nikon D500 and Tamron 150-600mm without slippage?
Asked by: Richard
The Sirui K-40X Ball Head, B&H # SISUK40X, has a 77 lb load capacity. The combined weight of the Nikon D500 DSLR camera and the Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 for Nikon F is 6.27 lbs. When tightened properly and mounting the camera/lens combination on the lens' tripod collar for proper center of balance, there should not be any slipping when using the aforementioned setup on the Sirui K-40X Ball Head.

question

is this ball head compatible with the Sirui monopods?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes. This ballhead will be compatible with Sirui monopods. The head features a 3/8 connection, which is standard size for both monopods and tripods. If you ever need to use the smaller 1/4-20 thread size, there are bushing adapters available. General Brand Tripod Reducer Bushing 3/8 to 1/4 -20B&H # GBRB ? Mfr # NPTRBThis scenario is less common, but having this part handy would cover you for almost all available support systems.

Does the 77lb load capacity only apply when it's vertical? For ex, if I wanted to use a 20lb cinema camera and lock it at an angle, would it slip?
Asked by: gabriel
The 77LB only applies when the ball head is in a center/horizontal position. We do not recommend using such heavy equipment off-center. Other brands make stronger ball heads but they are not really designed to be used in such a way. Although they may work at the beginning, the ball will slowly start shifting
