Canon 7034A007AA overview

  • 1Description

The EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM Lens from Canon utilizes multi-layer diffractive optical (DO) lens technology to correct chromatic aberrations, substantially reduce lens size and provide excellent overall telephoto image quality. This offers an alternative for sports, nature and wildlife photographers, giving exemplary results in a size previously unheard of for a lens of such a focal length and aperture.

In addition, Image Stabilization provides up to 2-stops of correction against camera shake for less blur when using slower shutter speeds. Furthermore, with two distinct stabilization modes are featured. Mode 1 is best used with still subjects while Mode 2 is optimized for panning with moving subjects. An ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) enables fast, smooth and quiet AF action and the AF stop buttons allow you to temporarily pause autofocus. Also, to minimize autofocus time with specific subjects, a focusing range limiter function lets you set the distances at which the lens will focus and with manual focus override, you can apply precise manual focus at any time, even in AF mode.

With a barrel constructed of magnesium alloy, the lens is designed to be lightweight and durable and a tight seal structure ensures effective dust-proof and drip-proof performance. A detachable, rotating tripod collar provides a stable mount to tripods or monopods and the drop-in Gelatin Filter Holder 52 comes with a glass filter and fits standard gelatin filters. This lens includes a dedicated lens hood and hard carrying case and is compatible with the optional EF 1.4x II and EF 2.0x II extenders.

High-diffraction optics suppress aberrations and provide class-leading low size and weight

    Canon 7034A007AA reviews

EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great travel & wildlife lens I have had a 500mm f/4 L for several years. However, it is really hard to hand-hold that lens for any length of time, and increasingly hard to travel with it with the increasing baggage weight restrictions on airlines. I got the 400 DO about four months ago, mainly for wildlife photography here and overseas and I love it. It is easy to handhold and pack for travel. Rather than trying to pack the heavy tripod & Wimberly gimbal I use for the 500, I rely on hand-holding & bean bag for the 400 + 1.4X TC, and if really needed, it is light enough to use my Velbon carbon-fiber spotting scope tripod. Because I have the lens with me, I am getting far more, super-sharp photos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love It! I have used this lens extensively both hand held and on a tripod including with a 1. 4 III teleconverter. This lens is sharp! I love it in every way. I have travelled extensively throughout Southeast Alaska in my boat and the portability of this lens allowed images I could not possibly have obtained otherwise. I really don't have an opinion about contrast, other than once I have enhanced my photos in Lightroom, the images are consistent with other L lenses I've owned and used. Amazing technology and I wish Canon would release a 600 f4 DO. It would be my next lens. Weight really is a major factor with these big lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best hand held lens for birding I and my wife both own one of these incredible lenses. I print 24 x 36 prints with this lens attached to a 1D Mark III, and even with a 2x extender at 800mm, this lens picks up the folds in the skin under the eyes of the birds we shoot. The great thing is that you can walk around and hand hold the lens which allows you to capture a lot more action since you aren't tied to a tripod. I also have the 600mm, but it's far too heavy to hand hold. This lens is far more practical if you like walking around with your lens, as compared to the 400 2.8 which I bought and returned in 2 days. That thing is a beast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Wildlife Lens I Can Carry I'm an old lady wildlife photographer. I've begun to have shoulder problems from carrying a regular 500mm lens with 1.4x converter, tripod and DSLR with a 1.6 crop factor. When my husband pointed out this lens, i was hesitant. Those crisp, wonderful photos with our big lenses are so special. But I've been delighted. Tiny birds a long way away hanging on cliff walls are sharp. Birds just a few yards away are just as detailed as with the bigger lenses. Still, with the 1.4x converter, this lens is ONLY the equivalent of 560mm. So I still love to shoot with the 500m and converter close to the car. But when it comes to carrying into the field, this is definitely my lens of choice.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Sharp I've owned the 400 DO for 4 years opting for the light weight and easy handling. It replaced a 500 f4 IS Canon lens that was excellent but heavy for me. The DO isn't as sharp as the 500 and that is my major complaint. I recently purchased a new 500 (like the one I sold for the 400) and am pleased with photo quality. The switch for the A-F and IS project from the barrel and are easily moved during handling. Canon could fix this easily. The lens rotation in the mounting ring is inferior to Canon's other big tele's. For the price of the lens I would expect the same smoothness. There is no de-tent to feel when the lens is rotated 90 degrees, for instance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet Piece of Glass I'm using this lens for primarily wildlife photography. I wanted a lens which travels well including in small commercial aircraft. I'm using a 1.4 extender with a Mark IIID. While have not had a chance to use the lens in the field, I have been using it in a limited fashion. It appears to have the portability and clarity needed to perform the intended tasks. The clarity of the captures are remarkable. The carrying case is provides substantial protection. I think overall Canon did it right with this lens. If it was lighter in weight I would be happier, but isn't that always the complaint with any 400 lens?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Performer I bought this lens two weeks ago and have been extremely pleased with the results. It replaced a 100 - 400 Canon lens and I should have made the move much sooner. Forget about the reviews that claim this lens is soft, IT IS NOT. I have used this lens for wildlife hand held and then used my 500 f4 Canon on a tripod. The 400 DO held it's own in this field comparison. This lens is light enough for occasional had held shots and travels well in my back pack. I am pleased and can't wait to try it with the Canon 1D X.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What's all the fuss about? I too procrastinated for some years over whether to buy the 400mm 2.8L, or to ignore all the critics in favour of weight & price. Now I wonder just why I waited at all! This is a superb lens for animal & bird work, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I also have the 300mm f/2.8L IS, and without doubt it deserves all the accolades it receives, but to my mind, the difference in image quality I'm getting from this new DO is negligible. I was asked why I didn't just add the 1.4x converter to the 300mm, and the reason being is that it is just not a walk-around set-up like this 2kg, being far too bulky and significantly heavier. I've been in this game for over 40 years, and I can tell you without a moment's hesitation that this is a cracking good lens, and worth every cent. Forget the nay-sayers..... they've probably never owned one for long enough to find its true value.
