B+W 65-014341 overview

  • 1Description

The B+W 77mm Strong UV Absorbing 415 Filter is designed to help maintain image sharpness when photographing subjects that emit fluorescence while being exposed to a UV excitation light.

Fluorescence is a process that begins with chemical compounds called fluorophores as they absorb light energy from an outside source. Atoms and molecules within the fluorophores then emit their own light at lower energies and wavelengths that correspond to the original light source, making the fluorophores appear to glow. The proteins in various plants and animals contain fluorophores, creating the opportunity for unusual or unique images. Similarly, minerals distributed within rocks can produce a wide variety of fluorescent reactions and patterns. Since UV wavelengths with their relatively high energy levels can help yield intense fluorophore reactions, UV light sources are frequently considered ideal for producing colorful and easy-to-photograph fluorophore effects.

However, reflected light from a UV lamp used to excite the atoms and molecules within fluorophores may not fully converge with the visible light entering a lens and the camera it is attached to, resulting in chromatic aberrations within an image. Upon close inspection, such chromatic aberrations can appear as purple fringes along the edges of a subject or other photographed objects. When viewed from a distance, these purple fringes also have the overall effect of decreasing contrast along those edges, making an image affected by chromatic aberrations appear unsharp, or slightly out of focus. The B+W 77mm Strong UV Absorbing 415 Filter helps capture sharp images featuring fluorescing subjects by blocking reflected light from a UV lamp being used to provide the energy needed to initiate a fluorophore reaction, while allowing the resulting glow into your lens and camera.

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter features an F-Pro brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

Helps maintain image sharpness when photographing subjects that emit fluorescence while being exposed to a UV excitation light.
Blocks UV light used to trigger fluorescence that could also result in chromatic aberrations, causing an image to appear unsharp or slightly out of focus while allowing the fluorescent glow to be photographed or recorded.
Does not require adjustments to exposure while in use.
Constructed from Schott glass for optical clarity.
F-Pro brass filter ring helps to prevent jamming and provides additional strength.
77mm front filter threads allow use with other filters.
Plastic case for storage and transport.

    B+W 65-014341 reviews

77mm Strong UV Absorbing 415 Filter is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from High-performance protection Bought this filter to protect my EF 100-400 zoom lens. Have used B+W filters (polarizing, ND, color grad, UV) for over 20 years with great satisfaction. Their brass construction really hold up to hard use in sometimes extreme environments. I've had some 'lesser' filters get stuck on my lens in very cold temperatures here in Colorado. I have performed test shots on another lens using the same UV filter and found no color shift at all when comparing photos w/ and w/o the UV filter--just what I would expect from B+W. The filter removes a great deal of haze when shooting panoramas in the mountains where I live. Though among the more expensive, B+W UV filters provide great protection for expensive lenses without affecting image quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved me over $1000 While this filter is a hefty initial investment, I can certainly attest to its construction. I was photographing on some slippery ice when I took a fall while holding my camera. The lens hit the ice hard. The filter cracked significantly but the lens was perfectly fine. This little guy saved me over $1000. That's why I bought another. I would not want anything else on as big an investment as a pro-level lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome!! I bought this item for my Canon 100-400mm for my railroad photography. its helps create more of a blue sky and is helps out in low sun angles. All around worth the price. Sometimes get a reflection with the headlights from the train but not always.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor Anti-reflection Coating I bought this filter for astrophotgraphy as it is often thought that cutting out the short blue leads to sharper images. However this filter is either uncoated or has at most one anti-reflecction coating. In comparison with a Hoya UV HD multi-coated filter the reflection from this B&W filter is at least 3x stronger, perhaps more. It is way more reflective than the front surface of my modern Canon lenses. Note the lack of any anti-reflection coating details in the description of the filter. Thus I judge that any gain in sharpness from cutting out the short blue is likely to be lost, and more, from internal reflections and flare. Not recomended except for very special applications.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great glass, blocks UV in NYC I visited NYC and was shocked as to how disgusting this place looked. After putting on the UV blocking glass filter by B+W it cleaned it up quite a bit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from it seems to be rather effective I know it is very difficult to review a filter outside a lab, basically brecause of the lack of propper instrumentation to review the results, but i do believe this one is worth it. It is extremelly well build, and i think this time antireflex coatings won't come off as it happened to me with Hoyas and Marrumis...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love It! B+W is worth every penny! Super sharpe images, nice coloring. And when my lens hit the floor it saved me!
