Acratech GP-s Ballhead with Lever Clamp
Key Features
  • Functions as a Gimbal Head
  • Functions as a Leveling Base
  • Reduced Base Diameter for Travel Tripods
  • Lever Quick Release for Arca Style
The Acratech GP-s Ballhead with Lever Clamp is an updated version of the existing GP-s head. Rather than a rubber knob, this model features a locking lever for securing the Arca Swiss-style clamp that constitutes the quick-release element.

Featuring first-class construction, the GP-s Ballhead also functions as a gimbal head for lenses up to 400mm f/4.0, and it can be positioned upside-down to function as a leveling base for panoramic photography. Even if you're operating on rocky or otherwise uneven terrain, you can pan absolutely parallel to the horizon, so you won't need to carry a separate leveling base to create accurate stitched panoramic imagery.

With all that functionality, the GP-s Ball head is designed with a small base diameter of 2.08" to allow it to be used with travel-type tripods whose legs fold up 180°, reaching to the top of the tripod head. The smaller base diameter allows the tripod legs to fold more compactly.

The ballhead also features a bull's-eye level on the quick-release clamp and a detent pin, which prevents the plate and anything attached to it from sliding out of the quick-release clamp when it's partially loosened. Lightweight at only 0.9 lb, the GP-s Ballhead supports loads over 25 lb from any position, including tilted 90° and mounted upside-down.

question

Will the Acratech GP bullhead w/ lever B&H ACGPLC . MFR # 1158 work with Gitzo 1544T tripod? will the legs fold completely and what plate would be best with Nikon750
Asked by: Stephen A.
I can't speak to that specific tripod, I do know that the maker sells plates which are designed for specific cameras. Check the manufacturer's web site or give them a call.

question

Perhaps I am missing something, but as a design issue, why place a bubble level where the camera plate covers it up? Final leveling is not possible, particularly when can't mount the hotshoe level attachment due to flash or radio triggers occupying the hotshoe. Seem to be a design flaw including level where it is.
Asked by: Lawrence
Hi Lawrence,This clamp was designed to fit the large variety of sizes of Arca-Swiss quick release plates. The lever clamp had to be designed in a way that would allow both sides of the clamp to move. This only left the inside of the clamp for the bubble level. If you want the level visible when the camera is attached we do offer our knob style quick release clamp.

question

I have a Manfratto 290 and I find 3 way head difficult to work with. Is this ball head too much for my Manfratto or should I go with a better tripod?
Asked by: Wayne C.
We use the Acratech GP-s ball head with the Manfrotto 190CXPRO3 and are extremely happy with the setup. I would certainly expect that head not to be too much for the Manfrotto 290 series. We also found the bushing on the side of the Acratech to be very useful.
