Acratech 1165 Overview

The Acratech Panoramic Head is designed to facilitate precise panoramic photography with DSLR cameras and lenses as long as 600mm f/4.0. With laser-etched degree markers on both the pan and tilt dimensions, the Panoramic Head is suitable for multi-row stitched imagery, facilitating the broadest views possible. The head has separate controls for pan and tilt, and there's also fully adjustable tension control.

Sturdy construction is a hallmark of the Panoramic Head – it's based on Acratech's Long Lens Head so heavy lenses will be well served. The head is composed of CNC-machined aluminum, which is anodized for a black-satin finish. Hardware is made of long-lasting stainless steel, and all knobs are secured so that they can't vibrate loose and fall off.

Use your existing Arca-type camera plate – the quick release clamp features a classic knob clamp and is compatible with plates from several manufacturers (plate sold separately). The clamp is not removable but is indexable, and it locks in at 90° increments.

Acratech 1165 Reviews

Fantastic!

Why do photographers chose a ball head when they can pair this with the Acratech leveling base? A breeze to set up for a perfectly level pano. If you need to recompose the shot up or down, or take multi-row panos, it is easily done without having to re-level the base. Sturdy construction. Easily manages my 400mm lens. Highly recommend.

I would recommend the Acratech Panoramic Head to anyone. I needed a well built panoramic head for a 4x5 field camera. I will add the Acratech Nodal Rail also.

Solid and well made. Very securely hold DSLR and medium telephoto lens. Matches well to Leophoto tripod with leveling head.

Excellent tripod head for those frustrated with ball heads

Very well constructed in every detail. Certainly very good for horizontal panos. Vertical panorama action really requires a gimbal rig. But this head is excellent when combined by a base leveler. No more frustrating ball head leveling. Set it once and its ready. This mount features very precise leveling bubble beneath the mount, a base that rotates to accept your L bracket and long lenses, a clutch to keep lenses and cameras from flopping downward, and a tightening knob which holds fast.

Well made lightweight panoramic head made in the United States. Bought this based on a recommendation from a professional photographer that I follow on You Tube. I wanted a light weight set up for hiking and this will be perfect. Easy to use and I am looking forward to taking this on my next trip. You get what you pay for. Would definitely recommend.

This is a fantastic head for general and panoramic photography. I will never go back to a ball head after using this head. It is so smooth and really built very well. The quality is awesome.

Does anyone know how to loosen the index knob ...

Does anyone know how to loosen the index knob with the included Allen wrench so I can change the orientation of the top clamp?
Asked by: James
There is a wheel underneath the quick release clamp. If it is too tight to loosen by hand, you can use the supplied allen wrench to insert into one of the holes. Remember, right is tight and left is loose.

Can anyone give suggestion as to how to loosen the index knob, it won't budge at the moment?
Asked by: James
There is a flat round turn wheel below the quick release clamp. It has holes on each lobe. Turn to the left to loosen. If it is too tight, insert the supplied allen wrench for added leverage if needed. As you loosen, the clamp can be lifted and rotated to re-position.

What is the difference between this 1165 vs 1160 ...

What is the difference between this 1165 vs 1160 ? It looks different though.
Asked by: Hiromu
The 1165 has degree marking on the tilt axis and the 1160 has none. The 1165 also has a pointer ring on the pan which the 1160 has none. They both can function as a Long Lens Head but the additional parts on the 1165 allow the photographer to shoot multi row panoramas. They both have the index-able clamp which allows you to orient the clamp for a lens or a camera body.

Can the the Acratech locking lever clamp be used on this head?
Asked by: brent
No, it cannot. We have a unit that will work but it has to be bought directly from us. It requires disassembly that is not recommended to be done by the customer.

question

I'm always looking for ways to get multiple uses from a piece of equipment. How would this head compare ergonomically to a regular gimbal head for spontaneous panning and wildlife work?
Asked by: Nolan J.
You can pan and tilt just fine with this head. Its almost my full time head because its rock solid. If you want to compose quickly with a large range of motion use a their ball head.

question

How does one use a camera vertically on this Acratech panoramic head? With an L Plate only?
Asked by: Bruce
I use the Acratech L bracket. You could rotate the the head by 90 degrees so the mounting plate is vertical however the camera would not be aligned over the pivot point of the head.I would highly recomend the lL bracket the Acratech makes.

It is possible to use this with a Really right stuff B5D3-LC L-bracket and acratech nodal slide? (I want a camera specific L-bracket, but there isn't an acratech one - they are all universal/adjustable ones)

question

If used with a nodal slide and leveling tripod, will this produce accurate and properly aligned multi row panos? Some of the reviews seem to indicate that there is a problem with this. I am looking at the RRS multi row package but am curious about this one.
Asked by: Eric
We have many customers using our Panoramic Head (1165) and are very satisfied with the results. There is theoretically some parallax error when the head tilts, but we have found that the error is so small that the images still stitch together correctly. The head provides good results and a light weight solution.
