Panasonic TH-42BT300U overview

  • 1Description

The Panasonic TH-42BT300U 42" HD Professional Plasma Display is primarily designed for broadcast and post production use, and with those types of environments, the plasma display is designed to be a workhorse. The 100,000 hour rated panel will satisfy the busiest of users while reducing image retention when running program material for long periods of time.

The TH-42BT300U boasts HDMI, component, DVI, PC and RS-232C inputs/outputs but also allows the addition of more mounting boards like SLOT 2.0, which is developed to defeat obsolescence and promote expandability.

The 1920 x 1080 panel features a wide color gamut backed by an unheard of 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio which recreates crisp detail in any installation regardless of viewing angle. Speaking of color gamut, the TH-42BT300U includes the ability for users to customize their color gamut response to their needs as well as many other studio grade features never found before on a plasma display monitor.

The TH-42BT300U treats viewers to steady, blur-free, fast moving images and is the perfect fit for any environment that needs 24/7 operation.

Designed primarily for broadcast and post production use, the TH-42BT300U includes the ability for users to customize the color gamut response to their needs as well as many other studio grade features never found before on a plasma display monitor
The TH-42BT300U offers superb images with stunning colors for displaying materials in all their natural beauty. Six modes are provided, including the color gamut modes for broadcasting and post production use including SMPTE-C/EBU/BT.709 and Digital Cinema Color and Native. Custom mode allows you to set the hue for each RGB color while viewing a simplified chroma diagram
In addition, a variety of markers can be used when editing images and when used as a broadcast monitor; the standardized gamma characteristics can be reproduced when γ1.0, γ2.2, γ2.35, γ2.4, or γ2.6 is selected
It also provides a motion-image performance that is 1.5 times that of conventional models. The full HD moving picture resolution speed index is 1200 pps (1080 lines of moving picture resolution). This treats viewers to steady, blur-free, fast moving images such as sports scenes and action films

    Panasonic TH-42BT300U reviews

TH-42BT300U 42" HD Professional Plasma Display is rated 1.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Flickers with 23.98 PsF, needed firmware We purchased along with Dual Link input card as a client monitor for a post production color grading suite, but it had some serious deficiencies in our scenario. Unlike other pro displays (or cheap converters), Dual-Link HDSDI is not menu-configurable, so if the signal doesn't match SMPTE specs exactly, the input card will fail to detect the the B signal, giving only the content of the A channel. Display of HDSDI signal at 23.98 PsF flickers badly, especially on bright areas of high contrast scenes. The originally installed (Nov.2011), older firmware didn't allow for rec709/BT1886- matching calibration. For target gamma of 2.4, peak luminance was just over 80 (not 100) nits with very loose RGB tracking at low IRE that gave an effective gamma of about 2.2 up to 60IRE. The Monitor setting suggested for post/broadcast use simply knocked down peak luminance, instead of seemingly disabling ABL. Perhaps this is improved somewhat with the new firmware with 16-point adjustments. But even with new firmware (thanks to on site visit from Panasonic tech), with PsF signal, ghosting motion artifacts on leading/trailing edges were intolerable. If using for post, flicker and motion artifacts may be minimal if signal is converted to progressive, but getting full BT1886 performance may be tricky. Since the firmware upgrade failed to fix the flicker and motion artifacts, we didn't bother to calibrate a 3rd time. B&H, who referred me to Panasonic for tech support, provided great service, no complaints.
