Panasonic DMC-GX1 overview

  • 1Description

The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm Lens (Silver) puts a remarkable Micro Four Thirds camera, with a bevy of features and functions, and a groundbreaking interchangeable power zoom lens at your finger tips. The G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm / F 3.5-5.6 ASPH. / Power O.I.S. lens boasts extreme compactness, reminiscent of the famed "pancake" lens. Other highlights of the lens include HD video support, a nano surface coating, Light Speed AF and shortened shutter time lag, and, of course, Power O.I.S. The Optical Image Stabilizer suppresses large slow movement 2x more effectively than conventional MEGA O.I.S.

The GX1 embodies the hallmarks of a Micro Four Thirds camera - a compact body (thanks to its mirror-less design), stellar resolution with the 16.0Mp Live MOS Sensor, and the aforementioned multiple lens compatibility with LUMIX G and Leica DG lenses. Additionally, the Venus Engine provides for fast processing of files, noise reduction, and smooth operation of the camera's many modes. The GX1 also boasts a sleek design with easy to operate dials and buttons. Other design considerations include the 3.0" touch enabled LCD, the built-in flash, and the right-side grip.

The shooting functions of the GX1 are centered around the ultra high-speed, ultra-precise autofocus options. They allow you to take accurate, in-focus photos, without having to manually focus, with an emphasis on motion photography. This is evidenced with the 0.09 second Light Speed AF which is achieved by reducing the detection time for focusing by syncing the lens and the sensor at 120 frames per second. High-precision Contrast AF grants high accuracy, even when shooting at small F value, because focusing is controlled by the image sensor. Additionally, you can use Full-area Focusing with Touch AF, which allows you to set focus on any point in the field of view using the touch screen LCD. Other AF features include Pinpoint AF options, Touch AF in video recording, a flexible AF/MF mode button on the camera, and high-speed consecutive shooting.

Like its predecessors in the Micro Four Thirds genre, the GX1 also captures high def video. Boasting 1920 x 1080 HD video in the AVCHD (MPEG4/H.264) format, the camera produces movies that look great on HDTVs, HD monitors, and the like. Within the video features the camera can do a number of useful, fun, and creative things. One such example is its ability to capture 11.5Mp stills from video. Others include high quality sound with the Dolby Digital Stereo Creator, Touch AF for video recording, multiple creative controls and photo style options - including miniature effect, and Intelligent Auto Mode, which takes the guesswork out of capturing video. Of course, the in-camera editing options and the included software allow for manipulation, sharing, and more.

Numerous other features give you a creative edge when shooting with the GX1. These in-camera features and functions help you take normal snapshots and turn them into unique works of art! The aforementioned Creative Control mode works with still photos as well as video. Enjoy the options within this feature, including Expressive, for a pop art style, Retro, for the appearance of a tarnished photo, Sepia, for an antique look, and Toy Effect, which creates the same type of vignetting produced by a toy camera. Other options are available with this feature too. Additional functions of the camera include Touch Defocus Control, for artful focusing, and Photo Style, for manually choosing from 6 color types, among others.

16.0Mp Live MOS Sensor
The 16.0Mp Live MOS sensor plays a big role in high quality image rendering. With the dedicated circuit, which reads out signals with minimum noise, the level of noise is significantly suppressed by more than 66%. In shooting at high ISO setting, S/N (Signal-to-Noise) value is improved by approx. 200% compared with the conventional 12.1 megapixel sensor. The sensor performance improves by 6db at ISO 3200 and max. 9db at ISO 6400, resulting in the dramatically flawless image without noise
High-Sensitivity Shooting Up to ISO 12800
Taking full advantage of the Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine, images can shot in low-lit situations at with clarity and quality. The 12800 high ISO sensitivity setting is stunningly clear with sharp resolution
Venus Engine
In addition to the high-speed signal processing, thanks to the 3 CPUs, the image processor Venus Engine boasts its excellent performance with an adoption of noise reduction technology for an even higher quality image. By separating chromatic noise from luminance noise even more accurately by applying the optimal noise reduction to each, you can capture clear and beautiful images even when shooting at high ISO sensitivity levels
Micro Four Thirds System Standard
By adopting the Micro Four Thirds System standard, the DMC-GX1 features a mirrorless structure that eliminates the mirror box and optical viewfinder unit. This carefully preserves the image quality while maintaining a compact profile, and provides you with even higher levels of performance in a digital interchangeable lens system camera
LUMIX G / Leica DG Lenses
The main appeal of an interchangeable lens system camera is the ability to achieve a wider range of expression by changing the lens. The DMC-GX1 lets you use the versatile lineup of Micro Four Thirds System standard lenses, including the LUMIX G / Leica DG lenses
Intelligent D-range Control
The Intelligent D-range Control offers even more natural looking images by optimizing the exposure for each part of a photo, preventing blocked shadows and blown highlights and helping ensure that gradation and details are reproduced beautifully, including the blue color of the sky. An automatic backlight compensation function is activated whenever the camera detects the subject in backlight
Intelligent Resolution Technology
With the Intelligent Resolution technology, 3 areas - outlines, detailed texture areas, and soft gradation areas - are automatically detected. Apart from the uniform enhancement of sharpness, the innovative technology, Intelligent Resolution precisely performs signal processing pixel by pixel in the most effective way for a particular area. As a result images are naturally clear and crisp in both photo and video recording
Sophisticated Design, Functional Beauty
  • One: Panasonic crafted a mode dial that is supremely easy to grip and turn. Additionally, the characters are laser printed, making them easy to see and able to stand up to the test of time.
  • Two: The ergonomically designed grip fits the DMC-GX1's flat profile, yet is easy to hold. Its tactile feel offers the shooter comfort thanks to its resin construction
  • Three: Optimum layout of control buttons and the mode dial, turn-and-press dial, and dedicated function buttons make the operation of the DMC-GX1 smooth and easy
Thoughtfully Designed Camera
As a camera from the premium GX line of the LUMIX G Micro System, the external design of the camera has been developed with no compromising in any detail. Available in silver and black, the DMC-GX1 offers luxurious comfort for the shooting experience with stunning performance and a host of functions
Level Gauge
The Level Gauge lets the camera detect the horizontal / vertical angle of view with its internal level, which works with the acceleration sensor. Photos shot in a portrait aspect will be automatically displayed vertically no matter which lens is used
Built-In Flash (GN7.6 Equivalent)
In spite of its compact size, the DMC-GX1's built-in flash has a light intensity that is equivalent to GN7.6, and you can adjust the intensity within a range of +/-EV 2 in 1/3 EV steps. It also lets you use 1st curtain sync. flash and 2nd curtain sync. flash to capture nightscapes with a natural flow of light

LUMIX's acclaimed Intelligent LCD function also automatically adjusts the brightness in 11 steps, according to shooting conditions. It lets you share the fun of viewing images with family and friends, too
Double Live View for the LCD and the Optional LVF
Both the LCD and the optional DMW-LVF2 (Live View Finder) give you a Full-time Live View of what you're shooting, with a field of view of approximately 100%. The viewing method can be selected to match your shooting conditions and composition, which makes them ideal for active shooting. You can confirm the depth of field and shutter speed effects by pressing the function button, if you select the preview mode
Dust Reduction System
If dust or other foreign matter gets inside the camera when you're changing lenses, it could cling to the image sensor and show up as a spot in your photos. The Dust Reduction System in the DMC-GX1 helps eliminate this possibility by placing the Supersonic Wave Filter in front of the Live MOS sensor, between the low-pass filter and shutter. Vibrating vertically around 50,000 times per second, the filter repels dust and other particles effectively

Flow of the Dust Reduction System:
1. Power off
2. When the camera is turned on, the filter vibrates to shake off dirt and dust
3. The dirt and dust adhere to the absorption part to prevent it from appearing in the sensor image

Extended Battery Life
With further optimization of the electric design, the DMC-GX1 excels in energy consumption and features approximately 11% longer battery life than the DMC-G3, which complies with the same battery pack, the DMW-BLD10
Compatible with UHS-I Standard SDHC/SDXC Memory Cards
The DMC-GX1 is compatible with the UHS-I standard for SDXC/SDHC memory cards, taking advantage of its high-speed data transmission
0.09 Second Light Speed AF
The DMC-GX1 features 0.09 seconds of Light Speed AF, which is achieved by reducing the detection time for focusing by the synchronization of the lens and the sensor at 120 fps. Not only the accuracy, but also the speed, surpasses high-end digital SLRs with phase-difference AF with the advanced contrast AF system in the DMC-GX1
High-Precision Contrast AF System
Compared with the phase-difference system AF, the contrast AF of the DMC-GX1 boasts higher accuracy even when shooting at a small F value. The phase-difference AF system is susceptible to mechanical margin of error. However, in the contrast AF system, focusing is controlled by the image sensor so that no mechanical margin of error occurs, resulting in precise focusing

    Panasonic DMC-GX1 reviews

LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Silver) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from love the body Love the aesthetics, handling, and IQ from the body so far. The PZ 14-42 has a lot of bad buzz regarding blur at the long end. I have not used the PZ 14-42 enough to have an informed opinion yet, so I reserve judgement for now. I hope the lens turns out to be good because a compact, zoom lens is the perfect pairing for the GX1. Also love the pop up flash that can be angled for bounce and I love the touch screen. Touch shutter is great. So glad they omitted a built-in EVF and variable angle LCD. Small size is more important to me. If you want those features, Panasonic can oblige. It's called the G3. Overall, this camera is a great balance between IQ and size. I like it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Will I leave my APS-C sized camera home? As someone who wears a size large size I find the GX1 full of buttons I often hit inadvertently. This is a matter of familiarization with the camera itself and practice with it. In addition, I did not find the menu items intuitively obvious. Therefore, reading the extensive manual was often necessary, but it's relatively well written and with a good index, answers were usually easy to find. My first 12X18 print from this camera, a skyline of Chicago, was amazingly sharp and full of detail, despite being taken hand held.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Delivers exactly what I wanted My wife bought me a Canon T3i Rebel for my birthday but I opted to swap it for the mirrorless system and have absolutely no regrets. I sweated the sensor size lack of viewfinder. The sensor size wasn't even worth worrying about and the quality of the shots speak for themselves. As for the viewfinder, every time I pick the camera up, I bring it up to my eye so I'll be buying the accessory viewfinder as soon as my budget affords it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Upgrade from my GF1 I use my cameras mostly for landscapes, architectural photos, and travel. I never shoot movies or use many of the art features on these new cameras, so why did I bother to upgrade from my old GF1? Three features of the GX1 were the attraction. First, the 16mp resolution is probably about optimum for the 4/3 sensor. This increased resolution also improved low-light (high ISO) performance. Second, the level gauge in the viewfinder is very useful especially when using the ultra wide lenses. And the compact 14-42 power zoom lens should be great for travel. This lens appears to be about as sharp as my old 14-45 but not as good as the 14 and 20 mm primes. It may be a little soft at the telephoto end, but a 16 x 20 print looks fine. I would also have preferred manual zoom, but the power zoom works OK so far. I did not get the external viewfinder for the new camera. Hardly ever used the one for the GF1 and it makes the camera harder to pack in a bag. Definitely recommend a protective filter the glass is right there when you remove the lens cap.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed I would recommend buying the body only. I expected to have sharp clear pictures exceeding my old camera's results. I find pictures taken with the telephoto lens I bought to go along with this camera are much sharper leading me to believe the lens is the culpret. I got the power zoom but don't like the inconvenient location of the lever. The zoom range isn't very long so it is probably just as easy to do it manually and save the money. I do like the increased resolution and the exposure control. I bought the Lumix because my last two cameras were Lumix and I thought it would be easy for me to learn which it has been. I also bought this camera because of the lighter weight, but if you can handle a heavier camera I would recommend you do so or get a better lens to go with this camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very pleased with size and photo quality Great quality photos. Fast auto-focus. Great low light performance. Sturdy build quality. Small lightweight compact size that fits in my pocket. We've wanted a DSLR for years, but knew with the weight and bulk we'd never carry one with us except in special situations. But we can take this one almost anywhere. A delight to use for family and vacation photos. Flash is a bit harsh and limited in range, but low light performance means we usually don't need flash indoors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Fun Camera My wife and I travel for 2 weeks with a carry on and small backpack. I wanted a camera that was light and small enough to put in a jacket or cargo pant pocket for travel and hiking. But I also wanted artistic control, good resolution, RAW data, and sharp lenses. A point and shoot was simply not sophisticated enough, a small DSLR too big, a Leica too expensive. Although I rarely feel the need for a long range zoom, in the future, I wanted the capability. This camera fit the bill. After several hundred photos, I am impressed. The lense is a little slow, but a small gorilla pod worked great in low light. The pictures were sharper at the outer ranges then I expected. I did not have the GX Visio PZ 14-42 clarity problems described in other review sites at 200% on PS: likely it's fixed, maybe I got lucky. The camera is comfortable with my very large hands and feels solid. It won't fit in a shirt pocket, but it was light around the neck, fit in my jacket and was far more accessible than my 300S when traveling. I love my Nikon lenses, but I took pictures that would otherwise have slipped by. A replacement? No. A smaller camera that is still fun to shoot with good results and very few compromises? Yea, this fit the bill. The Sony NEX wasn't much different in size then a Nikon consumer small DSLR matched with one of the kit lenses that I already own, except the Nikon would cost less.
