Digital Foci Photo Safe II Reviews

PST-251 Photo Safe II (320GB) is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Little Gem Travels 2745 Miles! I took this little baby on the Tour Divide; the worlds longest mountain bike race from Banff Alberta Canada all the way to the US/Mexican border in southern New Mexico. It was in a padded dry bag and it handled the full gauntlet of weather ranging from freezing to 100+ degrees. It did everything I wanted it to do and that was to keep my video and pictures safe. The only complaint I have is that it doesn't have a download complete confirmation and the interface is a little clunky, but it handled the 2745 mile journey just fine. If it can sit in my bike bag and handle the bouncing and weather that it did through two territories and five states I'm pretty sure it will be sufficient for any normal means of travel to the greatest of adventures..............

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ok For The Price I purchased this device so that I could quickly and easily get the photos off of the card of my second photographers that I use at my weddings. The card connection pics are a bit flimsy and will bend if you look at them wrong. Words instead of symbols would be nice on the face of the device so that I wouldn't have to explain to my assistants every time what combination needs to be pressed to start uploads. Other than these minor flaws it can be very useful to location photographers, no doubt!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast, quick, and Easy After the initial charge, the Photo Safe II was easy to use. It was able to download 5Gb of photo's from a compact flash card with no problem. I then uses a mini card, and it again preformed excellently. When I connected to my computer, it showed two files. The first was a Raw files from the CF card. The second was a Jpeg file from the MS card. All the photo's were there, and I was able to label the files so I can tell at a glance what is in the files. This unit also is useful as an auxiliary hard drive.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from slow but works It works fine but take a long time. Five GB from an SDHC took about 8 min. Considering the price I can live with that

Rated 2 out of 5 by from OK but no incremental backup I was looking for a reliable, simple autonomus data storage to dump my large CF Cards. This is an OK product but for me it has 2 major drawbacks : - No incremental backup - Quite slow (I compare to the Hyperdrive Colorspace I also own)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Total rip off Unfortunately there's not much else that dumps CF cards in the field with no PC interface. But this device is a total piece of junk. You CANNOT reply on it to dump your images on. DO NOT BUY THIS if you are expecting reliable back up of your images in the field. You're much better off doing a tablet PC and an external USB powered solid state HD, which would cost about the same and WORK WHEN YOU NEED IT. The battery on the Photosafe dies and has to be replaced (I'm on my third). The CF card slot is so poorly designed that I've bent the pins in there THREE DIFFERENT TIMES. Calls to Digital Foci prove fruitless as nobody there speaks English. Instead they send you form letters asking if you've turned the device on, etc. It's been in for service more than I've used it. TOTAL RIP OFF, SAVE YOUR MONEY. ZERO STARS.

    question

Downloading to a PC is with a USB port. Does the port stick out of the device so that one plugs the port into the PC, and the device hangs down from the port connection. I am having trouble visualizing it. Thanks, Doug
    Asked by: Anonymous
The USB cable that comes with the Digital Foci PST-251 Photo Safe II will stick out of the device, but will be long enough that the actual device will be able to be placed on a flat surface.

    question

Is this compatible with gopro files? Does it basically copy any files over that fit on the supported card types?
    Asked by: Anonymous
As indicated under the Specifications tab, the Digital Foci PST-251 Photo Safe II (320GB) is compatible with all formats including RAW and video files. As it is simply a storage device, it will copy any file (including GoPro video files) from any supported memory card for later transfer to a computer or laptop.

    question

I have plans to buy next week Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7 Digital Camera (Black) of course in B&H! and a SDXC 128 GB card so my question is if this device is compatible with this kind of card and my second question is:My new camera accept SD SDHC SDXC cards, which is the fastest (better) of all of it, so I can get the better performance and at the same time use PST-251 as a temporary storage.I don't want to carry my computer for a month in Europe.ThanksCarlos Ysunza
    Asked by: Anonymous
The Lumix DMC-LX7 Digital Camera by Panasonic is compatible with SD, SDHC & SDXC memory cards. An SDXC card will be incompatible with the Digital Foci PST-251 Photo Safe II, as SDXC cards are only usable in host devices that are specifically SDXC. If a device such as this one can only read up to SDHC, then SDXC cards will be unreadable. An SDHC card will be compatible with more devices than SDXC cards, and the main difference between them is just the amount of space available. SDHC cards go up to 32 GB, where SDXC cards can go from 64 GB up to 2 TB. The important things to look for in a memory card is the speed class rating, and the fastest cards are rated at class 10, with minimum write speeds of 10 MB/second. This SDHC card will be your fastest and best available option: http://bhpho.to/1adnrIS

    question

hi, i am thinking of getting this, will it be compatible with newer memory cards specially the SanDisk Extreme Plus 32GB SDHC UHS-1 Flash Memory Card Speed Up To 80MB/s- SDSDXS-032G-X46 ?i been reading up and people say it takes for ever to transfer of that the battery dies before it finishes.
    Asked by: Anonymous
Yes it will be compatible with newer memory cards, (up to SDHC capacity - i.e. no larger than 32gb). The device has a set transfer speed for transfering files from memory card to it, at a rate of 5mb per second, or 1gb of data in 3.5 mins (this is irregardless of how fast the card is). The battery is rated for 80 mins of continuous uploading. Keep these parameters in mind when in the field and you should be ok to avoid it dying during a transfer.
