    Nagra Nagra SD reviews

SD Handheld Digital Audio Recorder is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Professional Quality & Very Compact I haven't found too many reviews for this amazing little gem of a recorder. Nagra blows me away again. I own several Nagras, and to be honest, I was concerned that maybe the SD would't be able to compete with some of their other recorders... I was completely WRONG!Hands down- this recorder is the best in it's class. The preamps are full, clean, sensitive, and amazingly detailed. IMHO - no other handheld unit comes close to the SD's sound quality. I use the Green Band clip on mic mostly to capture ambient sounds, cityscapes, and sound effects. (the mic is not included w/ the SD) The results are stunning and delicately detailed. It fits perfectly into a pocket and is super stealth for those recording from da hip moments..This is not some Prosumer recorder. The SD is strictly pro and puts pro sound in the palm of your hand. The only issue I have is with the flimsy plastic battery door. The rest of the unit is finely finished metal... It's not a big deal, but I'd have preferred a more solid material (metal) battery door.I know the SD is expensive, but I'm glad I took the plunge... The sound is purely amazing and surpasses any other handheld PCM recorder I've used. Hope this review helps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very small, very effective The most discrete and completely portable hand-held recorder. Paired with Nagra's green band microphone (or my Sennheiser ME 64, it delivers excellent results once you understand both its strengths and limitations. The pre-amps set it apart from the lower priced competition. I was willing to pay the price for superior sound quality in an extremely portable package.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nagra SD The Nagra SD is a fairly priced, discreet, well built, remarkable hand held PCM recorder. When matched to the top end stereo MIC is capable of capturing stereo sound with a good delta and very low inherent noise. The full & clean natural sound captured positions this machine truly apart, it goes beyond the much acclaimed Sony PCM-D1. The sound quality contrast with the PCM-D1 is easily discernible. The reproduction of a recorded performance through good headphones can almost transport you to the live listening experience,. It is that good! Nagra impresses with their fine expertise in professional sound recording. There is a useful SD card speed test feature that allows you to determine adequate SD card write/read speeds for a chosen sampling frequency and data density. Can be useful to determine minimum essential SD performance, avoid overkill and save money. It is also very easy on two NiMH batteries, which easily last over five hours of continuous recording. It is clear, when it comes to hand held PCM recorders, the Nagra SD is La Jefa.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Naagra solid-state recorder I bought the Nagra because my Sony PCM recorder had begun (again) sporadically dropping one channel. I recorded choral a cappella singing with both machines. Both are very good, but on repeated listening I decided that the Nagra sound was somehow warmer, more natural. It's also smaller and lighter, uses batteries more efficiently and has more memory.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sound quality This is by far the cleanest audio I have heard for a portable recorder. The green band microphone gives great stereo background sound. The white band is great for interviews. If placed directly in line with the camera, the stereo sounds clearly travel in the direction of movement in the camera. It is clear and the motion is clean and clear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Extremely well built, easy to use, and great stereo sound with the green capsule. Very good preamps.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Stellar Playback, Very Good Capture First, the bad: the moment I unboxed the SD the center power button fell off. This wasn't a problem as a little super glue made it good as new -- better even.Overall the build quality is very solid. As others have noted, the all metal construction gives the unit some heft and structural integrity. With the exception of the buttons, which seem to be made of thin aluminum and do not match the body in terms of build quality, the SD is a well built unit. The DAC is nicely paired with the headphone/line out. As a playback device the SD is stellar. It drives my Sennheiser HD 25 ii and 600 really well. Do note that the unit lacks gapless playback. As a capture device, the SD is very good. I've only tested the ext mic in with a Schoeps CMBI, the battery powered mic body for the Collette capsules. I've been running this setup for nature recording and sound effects. Even in very quiet situations, the SD has just enough gain to secure a good capture. Nagra recommends the hi gain setting for ext mics, and I've found that this holds. By my non scientific experience, 24bit/96Khz produces the best results.
