    Nissin MF18 reviews

MF18 Macro Ring Flash for Canon is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great I was surprised at just how easy it is to get good exposure using this flash. I was hoping that the flash functions would be accessible through the menu on my 5D3. They are not. The good news is that the menu on the LCD of the flash is intuitive to use and faster than the camera menu. Moreover, I do not have to carry the instruction manual around in my pocket in order to use it even though it has the full range of adjustments needed on macro flashes. Hopefully, this is the last macro flash I will need to buy because of the USB update capability.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good option I used to have a sigma flash and I' much happier with this one! It tells you when you are running out of batteries and that's important because with the sigma I never new until my pictures where getting dark! Slightly cheaper than canon, but I can't compare with canon as I have never used one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good, versatile ring flash I had some reservations about buying an off-brand ring flash, but the Nissin is serving me well so far. The function keys are intuitive and it comes with all the adapter rings needed for a wide range of lens diameters, which the Canon equivalent does not. Also, it's large enough to accommodate the Canon 24-70 L, which is a great macro lens, but at 77mm, the Canon ring flash won't fit on it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Competitive Ring Flash This is the third ring flash I've owned. When I first decided to buy a ring flash for macro work for my business, I was shocked at the cost and ended up buying a much cheaper Canon knock-off (B&H doesn't carry it; that should have been my clue). I thought it was great until it broke. After (luckily) getting my money back, I replaced it with a genuine (but pricey) Canon unit, which most reviewers consider to be the gold standard and which continues to work great. When I added another camera set-up (EOS 70D) to my business I needed to add a second ring flash to my kit. I still had a hard time with the Canon price, though, and I came across this Nissin MF18 Macro Flash which has a good reputation. So, I am able to compare this Nissin flash to both the good and the bad. Some users really like the Nissin control interface, but I found it a little less engaging and intuitive than that of the Canon. After a few minutes with the instruction manual, however, I was good to go. It's all about the photograph, after all. Subjectively, the flash seems to perform as well as the Canon for my work. It feels robust, and while I think the Canon has a slightly more refined look and feel, the Nissin is not bad at all. Only another macro flash user will be able to tell a difference. The Nissin kit comes with six precision aluminum adapter rings, offering more savings over going with the Canon flash which doesn't come with any adapters (as luck would have it, though, the Nissin kit didn't have the right size for my Tamron 100mm f/2.8 macro lens so I had to buy an inexpensive step-up ring). All in all, I'm pleased so far with the Nissin ring flash. It's definitely competitive to the gold standard, and the money I saved will go a long ways towards another lens (that I probably don't really need)!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not Only For Macro Finally! Someone is making ring flash that fits also professional lenses with big filter diameter, like 77mm. I actually use ring flashes for portrait photography as a source of fill in light. Until now my problem was that available ring flashes (Canon, Sigma or Vivitar) could only be used with lenses of up to 58 mm diameter thread. I wanted to use it mounted on Canon L lenses like 24-105 or 70-200. Eventually I found this Nissin and got it immediatelly. Yesterday I was using it for the first time during beauty pageant and here is what I found. Its solidly and aesthetically built. Looks better than Sigma. Love the simple and very easy to understand and use menu. Displayed is small but colourfull and it rotates depending on which position speed light is. No matter if you shoot in portrait or landscape mode you can always easily read what display says. Really love the ease of use. If I will ever need to buy another speedlight I will probably go for Nissin because of that. I owe Sigma ring flash for years and often had to navigate the menu back and forth to find what I was actually looking for. On my first use of this Nissin I was able to adjust whatever I needed within a few seconds, even though I never read a manual! You don't need manual to figure out everything you need to know to use it properly. Actually it is not even provided by manufacturer, only quick guide, but I think we cut enough forest anyway. It is definitelly strong enough to be used as your main speedlight for the events. Since the source of the light is all around the lens, all parts of the picture are equally exposed, something that never happenes when you use traditional speedlight with burner that sits on top of the camera. With this kind of flash however, you use direct light, it can't be bounced off the ceiling. That causes very strong red eye effect which requires post editing. Actually You can take the burner off the lens and pointed it towards the wall or ceiling but that's not how this kind of flash supposed to be used. Why only 4 stars? Because I noticed white vignetting on some pictures. You have to make sure burners are in away from the center position when you use it for portraits on 77mm lenses. Even then sometimes corners are white-ish. I still have to figure out when it happenes. I assume it might have something to do with used apreture or/and lens optical length. I wish it could be even bigger actually, fit 82mm thread lenses. Maybe then there would not be vignetting on 77mm thread lens. However then it probably wouldn't be a macro flash anymore.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Long wait - good product .........The product works as stated. The LED focusing lights work very well and were a key feature that I needed for extreme macro work. The menus are good although not entirely intuitive. The unit is shipped with numerous, well-made adapter rings for mounting the device on the lens. The right and left sides of the strobe are adjustable for creative effects. I am very pleased with this purchase ............

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Control and Use The controls on the falsh are easy to understand and use right out of the box. Works great with 430EX as slave with Canon 100M 2.8L. It is bulky but as a special use flash, you would expect that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Redefines intuitive The controls on this flash unit are the most intuitive that I have ever seen. Yes, you can go into the menus for more control, if you really need it.
