Nikon 2171B overview

  • 1Description

The AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8G ED VR Lens from Nikon is a premium, fast telephoto prime lens for the Nikon autofocus system. It is designed for full frame DX format DSLRs and is also compatible with FX format cameras, providing a 600mm focal length equivalence on crop sensors. It is a very robust and durable lens, incorporating a magnesium die-cast barrel and professional-grade dust and moisture sealing for use in rugged situations.

This lens features the Nikon Vibration Reduction image stabilization system to reduce the blur caused by camera shake, enabling confident handheld telephoto shooting, even in low-light conditions. In addition, this lens offers Tripod Detection mode to reduce the vibration that may occur due to shutter release when mounted on a tripod.

An internal focus system and Nikon's Silent Wave Motor provides fast, precise and near-silent autofocus action and focus modes, including the A/M mode, enable fast switchover from auto to manual focus. Manual focus override allows immediate control over exacting focus with just a turn of the focus ring. Minimum focus distance is 9.5' and the focus memory recall function is supported.

The inclusion of three extra-low dispersion lens elements control chromatic aberration while enhancing color, contrast and sharpness and Nano Crystal lens coating and a meniscus protective glass element combine to reduce ghosting and flare. The durable lens barrel provides a wide, rubberized focus ring, a rotatable tripod/monopod collar and includes a drop-in filter holder, two piece lens hood and hard trunk case.

Fast, telephoto lens with f/2.8 maximum aperture, optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness on both the Nikon FX- and DX-format image sensors. On DX sensor cameras, the 35mm focal length equivalence is 600mm.
Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens, enables handheld shooting at up to 3 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper still images and video capture.
Exclusive Nano Crystal Coat and a meniscus protective glass element combine to reduce ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity. In addition, Super Integrated lens coating controls distortion.
Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables ultra-high-speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and powerful, super-quiet operation.
Rugged, reliable and lightweight, this lens features a magnesium die-cast barrel and professional-grade dust- and moisture-resistant construction.
Three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements control chromatic aberrations while enhancing color, sharpness and contrast, even at the widest aperture settings.
New A/M focus mode provides fast, secure switching between auto and manual focus operation.

    Nikon 2171B reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8G ED VR Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent 400mm - perfect delivery I use the lens for long distance photography and aircraft photos. The last 400mm that I used was and older manual Nikon lens on an F3hp. This lens blows that one away for clarity, color, and above all stability and focus. The VR feature works incredibly well. I leave it on normal rather than on tripod. I find that it works better for taking pictures of fast moving aircraft as well as stills that I take in high winds. The AF memory recall feature is a life-saver when it comes to shooting aircraft with a mountain background. One push and you are back to the same focus setting. I recommend a wimberley tripod head to balance the weight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lens Lust at its best This is not a hand hold job. It even showed flaws in my old monopod. My best advice would be to invest in a sturdy mono like the RSS offerings with a matching foot. It has transformed my shooting. Focus is fast and accurate, not as fast as the 200 f/2.0 but fast all the same. Colour saturation is excellent. Used it with a D300 and 1.7TC and has produced great results. The weight to me is a non-issue, it's very well built and that is reflected in the feel and controls layout. I mostly have VR off so can't comment on the VR performance, but I assume it works well. If you are after more reach when the sun is not out this lens is a light thief, you won't be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Fast-Action Powerhouse Auto-focus is lightning fast. Lens provides amazingly soft bokeh, and the subject jumps right out of the background. Images are as tack-sharp as any lens in the Nikon lineup. Haven't tried hand-held shooting with it, mostly because I believe this lens could single-handedly cause arthritis in my shoulders if used consistently without a tripod or monopod. It is not a light lens...but that's part of what I love about the top-shelf Nikon lenses. They feel like they are made from recycled WWII Sherman Tanks, but have the precision and sophistication that rivals a true work of art. It's expensive, but nothing this good comes at a discount.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again and again Bought that lens about 5 months ago and used it first on my Africa Trip to Tanzania Wildlife shooting. Oh what a trouble i thought at first use - its heavy, sturdy, bulky! Yes its weight is not to be underestimated! and i was always afraid of breaking it.But with a little practice and then i also added good tripod from Gizo & a Wimberly Head and now this piece is such a marvelous one. The pictures you make with that lens - just FORGET to do that with something else - I have tried many lenses for the last 25 years and must say only one thing - BRAVO Nikon. For proof - go and see my latest pictures of the Huskies i just shot few days ago in deep snowy Winter on Swiss High Montain under very bad weather conditions.... from Switzerland

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I AM ON TOP OF THE HILL. I am not a proffessional photographer. I bought the lens mainly to take action pictures of my 9 years old son. We took a ski trip to Kirkwood,California. On day one I took about 500 shots. I took the shots starting from niddle of the run all the way to the bottom without nissing an action. I caught every fall, every mistake and every smile he made. At that night when I looked through my commputer all the pictures I took that day. I can't beleive my eyes. I loved enery picture I took. they are sharp, crisp from corner to corner. For me it worth every penny I spent on this lens.I thought I was in a dream. By the way my camer is a Nikon D3S

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible lens performance Absolutely incredible lens performance, the Nikon 400mm AF-S VR F/2.8 lens is a benchmark standard for the sports or wild life photographer. I bought this lens for field sports especially for the fast aperture due to low light on Friday nights. This lens delivers phenomenal photos each and every time. Auto focus is dead accurate and super fast, my perception is this is one of the fastest focusing Nikon lenses available and I've got numerous experience with the Nikon line to compare it against. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't delay, buy today Very, very fast focus. The lens is large and heavy but that is what you expect with an F2.8/400mm lens. Photos are crystal clear with my D800. Image quality appears to be equally good with Nikon 1.7x teleconverter giving me a 680mm lens at F4.4. I debated and debated due to the price, but once clicking the shutter, the images beg for a good answer to: why did it take so long to decide and buy? If 10 pounds is too heavy and you can live with slower f-stop, maybe the 200-400 zoom would work for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow ! What A Lens Wow what a lens (Big) did I mention big? But this lens is wonderful, crisp, fast focus, a must for outdoor sports. It will focus faster than players can move, so tracking is no problem. This is a light gathering monster. You can shoot in light so low they can't play the game. No more grainy pic's because of high ISO setings needed by higher F stop lens. I feel like I'm cheating but I'm not. I paid the price $ and bought it. I use fast shutter speeds in low light and stop action for great shots. We recently went to Yellowstone what an opportunity to test this lens. Equipment, Nikon D-3 body, 2.0 Teleconveter, mono pod, and Nikkor 400mm F/2.8 lens. Subject Mother Grisley with cub's adout 300 yards out at dusk in the rain. Pic's look great like we were standing in front of her face. But we were at a safe distance This is what the 400 is made for, capturing the impossible. We spent a week in the back country doing just that, capturing 7 Grizley bears total.
