Acratech GV2 overview

  • 1Description

The Acratech GV2 Ball Head / Gimbal Head with Lever Clamp is an updated version of the existing GV2 head. Rather than a rubber knob, this model features a locking lever for securing the Arca Swiss-style clamp that constitutes the quick-release element.

The GV2 is a sturdy, heavy-duty, yet compact ball head that is similar in design to most conventional ball heads (unlike Acratech's unique Ultimate head). However, the GV2 model can be locked down when the head is in the 90° orientation (in the "gimbal slot"), which effectively turns this ball head into a gimbal-style head. This allows the camera to pivot around its center point. A bushing on the ball's stem and a pin on the bottom of the ball enable this smooth rotation – free, gimbal-style movement.

The built-in industry-standard Arca-Swiss-style quick-release clamp makes it compatible with the many different plates available from Arca-Swiss, Kirk, Wimberley, Really Right Stuff, Foba, Novoflex, etc. The clamp also features a spring-loaded detent pin that projects into the pockets or windows that are cut into the bottom of most manufacturers' (Acratech, Kirk, Really Right Stuff, etc.) quick-release plates. This detent pin will prevent the plate from accidentally sliding out in the event that the knob is partially loosened.

In addition, this model uses a "leveling" q.r. clamp, which features a large 15mm bullseye bubble level that extends out of the side of the clamp.

The GV2 features a low-profile design, and sports all-rubber knurled knobs that are comfortable to use, even in extreme weather.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lever clamp: In case QR isn't QR enough First and foremost, if you don't need or want the near instantaneous speed the lever clamp offers over the twist knob, buy the regular GV2. Otherwise, they are exactly the same... and since they are literally exactly the same, all the reviews about the GV2 apply here so long as they aren't about that knob. Thus, the first thing I'm going to talk about is the lever clamp as that is really all you're getting in this model. - The lever clamp is fast. Very fast. Click my camera is free of the ball head. Click its back on the ball head. - The lever clamp is very sturdy and smooth. No catching, creaking, scraping, or give. - The lever clamp is NOT prone to randomly coming off. You must actively depress the center latch or that thing isn't going anywhere. The center latch isn't in a place you are ever likely to accidentally brush against in such a way as to fully depress it while simultaneously pulling the whole lever in the opposite direction. It's one of those things that requires something that can actively pinch (e.g., an opposable thumb and finger) to use, immediately necessitating a thinking organism to de-latch the Arca Swiss clamp. Now, I won't say an accident beyond mindlessness will never happen, but I'd be very surprised if it happened in the next decade. Now, onto the head itself. The GV2 is great. It's firm, strong, very well made, simple to use, and a real dream. You're getting exactly what you're paying for. I definitely like how it looks, but that doesn't really mean much in terms of performance... just my happiness with the product, which counts on some level. They call this a ball head/gimbal head. For smaller lenses with a tripod collar, like a 70-200, or cameras with an L-plate this is actually pretty neat. The 'gimbal' feature requires it to be set at 90, which will put your gear hanging over the side of the tripod's mount but within the support base depending on the length of the lens' foot or height of the camera. Thus, be gravely aware of the physics of this setup. DO NOT attempt to use gimbal mode with a super-telephoto or other high weight equipment. May the gods of photography have mercy on your gear if you do. A few pounds is alright, but more than that is asking for a reason to buy a new super-telephoto. Having about a twelve pound top load suspended six inches from the center of gravity is just a few dynes short of keeling over. I tested this with an 800 and gripped 5D III. When the legs on my CT-3442 are fully retracted (smallest base; worst case), nothing budged... until I gently -- and I stress *gently* -- poked the side with a finger. When legs are fully extended, it is more stable, but nowhere near enough to instill a sense of confidence in using it out and about. Bottom line: This thing won't disappoint. Is the lever worth the premium? Not sure, but if spinning a knob really gets on your nerves...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best tripod head I've ever owned The Acratech GV2 Ball Head is beautifully crafted. I've fitted it on a Gitzo tripod for wildlife photography. The gimbal capability makes it very easy to balance and use. It is the best and most versatile ball head I have ever owned. Well worth the money.
