Floppy

It does what it's supposed to, which is provide a quick and easy way to level the tripod base. And as long as your tripod is reasonably close to level (which you want to do anyway since you don't want your tripod out of balance), this thing has plenty of range to get perfectly level. What I don't like, though, is that even after you think it's tightened, it has a tendency to flop down unless you REALLY tighten that clamp screw. I've had a number of times where I'm shooting and the lens gradually sinks down, meaning I have to reset it, tighten the clamp way past tight, and start over. And once you pick up and throw the tripod with camera over your shoulder, the camera will flop down as there's absolutely no way it can hold it. Not a big deal since obviously you're not shooting, but I have wondered on more than one occasion whether it'll still be attached when I get where I'm going. Despite that, it's on my tripod all the time, and never comes off (unless I'm using a star tracker, which there's no hope it would be able to hold).

I ordered this some time ago with two other items. This one was on backorder. It was on backorder for a LONG time. However, I can't even lower a star because of the obvious reason why it was long (Covid) and it wasn't really their fault. I questioned a few times, even though I felt a little embarrassed to do so, but I was just making sure that B&H didn't forget me. As I'm over the other side of the world, basically I got answered the next working day. All the staff were very polite and as soon as it came to B&H, they sent it straight away. And Iove this product. I'm assuming this will last me a lifetime. Very happy!

Speeds up process of levelling my camera on a tripod when it is not on perfectly level ground. Easy and quick. Does not move when I clamp it down. I only mention this because others may not have had the same experience.. Works for me.

So easy for panos!

Well this just made my life so much easier to get a level playing field instead of going up and down with tripod legs.... Acratech is solid and holds my gear steady as a rock.

Allows bubble level to be observed with Manfrotto’s large mag 057 ball head. It does require a good tightening when level is set using 600mm lens.

Very well made

I've owned this base for years and it's been supporting a Manfrotto MVH500AH the entire time. Tripods have changed, but this combo has not. The Acratech base is well made, compact, and easy to use. Well worth the investment.

This is the second Scratch Large Leveling Base to put on my second tripod. I like to shoot stitched panoramic and video with my DSLR. With this leveling base I don't waste time fiddling with my tripod legs to level the tripod, just put down the legs to something close to level, the use the 10 degree ALLB to level my ball head. The tightening knob works well to hold the ALLB in place. Then if I am shooting Panoramas or video the camera ball head stays level when panning.

question

Still trying to get my hands around. Would this make sense for ball head tripod heads at all? Or is it mostly for pan and tilt heads?
Asked by: Albert
The Leveling Base works perfectly with a ballhead. It allows you to level the base of the ballhead and then you can level the to top of the ball so that when you pan the base you are perfectly level. This is necessary if you want to shoot panoramic images.

question

My camera has a virtual horizon built in. Do I need this product?
Asked by: George M.
Hi George, The Leveling base is used to level the bottom/base of the head. If you use the virtual horizon feature in your camera it will be fine for single images, but if you want to do a stitch panoramic you will have to level the base and the top of the head. It all depends on what you want to do. If your tripod has a level on the base you can level the base by adjusting the legs. Our leveling base is designed to make it easier for photographers to level the base. I hope this helps.
