The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens is an incredibly versatile, lightweight, and compact lens designed specifically for digital SLR cameras with APS-C size sensors. The lens has a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range. It features a construction of 17 elements in 13 groups with glass that corrects for flare, ghosting and all types of aberrations. It produces high contrast and sharp images throughout the zoom range even at its maximum aperture.

Sigma's OS (Optical Stabilization) feature allows you to shoot at shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. This means your images will look sharper, even when shooting without a tripod in low existing light or at maximum range with a flash. This lens is also equipped with Sigma's Hyper-Sonic Motor (HSM) which provides for fast and quiet autofocusing.

The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 is ideal for many photo opportunities particularly landscapes and portraits, but with its wide focal range and a close focusing distance down to 11" (28cm) you can capture images with unique perspectives. It will quickly become one of the most important lenses in your gear bag.

Note: Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras.

This lens is for use with digital cameras with APS-C size sensors only. 1
The DC designation on the barrel means that this is a special lens designed so that the image circle matches the smaller size (APS-C) of the image sensor of your digital SLR. Its specialized design gives this lens the ideal properties for digital cameras, including a compact size and lightweight construction.
The 17-50mm f/2.8 offers Sigma's OS System (Optical Stabilization) that allows shooting at shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would be otherwise possible, for sharper handheld photography even in low-light situations.
Constructed with 17 elements in 13 groups, it features FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass which is the highest level low dispersion glass available with extremely high light transmission. This glass has a performance equal to fluorite glass which has a low refractive index and low dispersion compared to current optical glass. FLD glass offers superior optical performance, equal to fluorite, at an affordable price.
Its HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) ensures a quiet & high-speed auto focus.

17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Canon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 377.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect fit for 7D I was very upset with my new 7d images, very poor iq or image quality. after weeks of research and reading reviews I head my heart set on a new Canon 15-85 lens. So I spent hours trying different lenses from Canon, Sigma and Tamron. and walked out with this lens. it was the fastest on AF and the sharpest of all plus easier to see my adjustments in manual then all the rest. there's no manual focus in AF mode, plus limited range but the sharpest pictures I have been waiting for and expected from a two thousand dollar camera. I love my 7D now and the images from this lens hands down over all others in this price range, test your equipment before you by!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Brilliant but flawed The optics in this lens are very impressive and it is a nice size and build quality. Unfortunately the autofocus mechanism did not play nice with my Canon 7D at all. It back-focused most dramatically in the middle of zoom range and using the focus squares farther from center. I've never seen anything like it and hope I never do again! I had to send it back ... Will definitely be using B&H again, but I am at a loss to decide which lens in this class to try next. Should I take a chance and order another one or pay twice as much for the Canon equivalent which might also be flawed? Autofocus is surely the achilles heel of current DSLR systems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! The negatives you read about are not apparent in my lens. Many complaints I think come from not understanding the many control aspects of a DSLR and photography in general, but that is my guess. At any rate, this is a must buy if you have a crop sensor Canon. Makes all the difference in the world with my Rebel XSI and is the focal range I work with most. Looks good on the camera a produces the photos I wanted but was not always getting with the kit lens (in low light without the speedlight) Glad I made this purchase. It will be a keeper even after I move beyond the Rebel to another Canon crop sensor camera someday. Get yourself one from ...!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good, but not great, for the money I own the Canon 15-85 3.5-5.6 zoom, and purchased this as a faster alternative due to this having a constant 2.8 aperture. However, I found it a big soft wide open and needed to stop down to f4 to equal the quality (sharpness, contrast, and saturation) of the Canon wide open. The Sigma is almost as large and heavy as the Canon, but of course does not cover the 51-85mm range. So, for about half the cost of the Canon this is a very good budget alternative, but it's not a step up. In lower light I'll just increase the ISO by a stop. I returned the Sigma.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Returned due to focusing motor noise I liked the picture quality on my 70D but returned it due to squeaking focusing motor noise. The replacement lens works fine so far. I give B&H 5 starts for making it a hassle free transaction. I have no issues with auto focus as some reviews suggest. It's as sharp (if not sharper) as the Canon 17-40mm f/4 and the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 that I tried and returned. At $400+, this lens is a good value and a worthy upgrade from variable aperture Canon kit lenses. Couple of nit picks: The lens doesn't have full time manual focusing and the focusing ring turns on auto-focus. You need to be careful not to hold the lens by the ring. I can see the hood holding grooves can wear out easily over time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Buy I bought this lens because i wanted a wide angle zoom, but couldn't afford L-series glass. There was a slight clicking type of sound when focusing manually with the lens pointing up, but that has seemingly gone away with a day of moderate use... hope it's not a broken piece of gearing or something, but it seems fine now... other than that it's a sturdy build, takes great pictures with what my novice eye sees as good color and good contrast... I've seen a little bit of color aberrations on edges towards magenta, but it also could be sensor related... new camera body, and new lens.. For the money you can't beat it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best zoom lens for APC-S I bought this lens for inside photos, weddings and walk around wide angle shots. It is great for all those purposes. At 2.8 it's really sharp. You only need to stop it down if you want wide shots with sharp edges. Otherwise, 2.8 works great for almost any situation. Focus motor is a little noisy but not too much like, for example, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II. Other than that, it is acceptable fast, and most important, very accurate. Construction is a little weak, cheap plastics compared to my previous Canon 18-135mm, but it doesn't feel like if you will break it. Zoom and focus rings move smoothly. Optical stabilization works fine. The only bad to me is its weight. It feels heavy!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lots of Rattling and Autofocus Issues I'm not sure what the hype is on these lens, but I received two different copies of these lens and both made a ton of rattling while trying to autofocus on a shot for pictures and film. B&H photo has the best customer service and allowed me to exchange my first defected lens for another. However, I found that both had the same issues. I will stick to canon as their lens never rattle and autofocus quietly for me. The aperture brings in so much light for the shots and I love that but I could not get past the rattling noise. Try this lens and see if you like it! I'm not dissuading anyone from buying it. It just didn't work out for me.
