Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

The Tamron 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III VC Lens for Sony E Mount Cameras (Silver) made for the Sony E mount camera system incorporates a stepping motor that is optimal for the contrast-detection AF system of Sony mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras. This will also improve AF when shooting video. With the motor built into the lens, focusing will be quieter and more responsive.

The 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III VC is a high power zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras using the more compact (APS-C) digital size image sensors. The focal length of this lens is equivalent to approx. 27-300mm in 35mm format.

Designed as an "all-in-one" lens, it meets almost all photographic opportunities without changing lenses.

The 18-200mm zoom lens realizes an MFD (Minimum Focus Distance) of 1.5' (45 cm) over the entire zoom range by the employment of a new optical/mechanical design configuration. Since the maximum magnification ratio at f=200mm is 1:3.7, you can enjoy close-up photography easily and conveniently.

Note: Di-II lenses cannot be used with digital SLR cameras using image sensors that are larger than that of an APS-C size imager, or with 35mm film SLR cameras.

High-power 18-200mm lightweight and compact zoom lens weighing 460g with a 62mm filter is designed for the Sony mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera series. Equipped with Tamron's acclaimed VC (Vibration Compensation), the lens enables easy handheld shooting from 18mm wide angle to 200mm full telephoto.
Striking appearance worthy of the Sony mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera series design.
Stepping motor adopted for the AF drive, a construction that accommodates contrast-detection AF and shooting video.
The autofocus mechanism uses a stepping motor that is an ideal match for the contrast-detection AF system used in Sony mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera series. The stepping motor's actuator allows finely tuned control of angular rotation, and since it drives the focusing mechanism directly without an intermediate reduction gear, it also provides superbly quiet performance.
The Vibration Compensation (VC) mechanism employs a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance that eliminates the blur from handheld shots for cleaner, crisper shots. The VC has a moving magnet system with heavy magnets in the vibration-compensating lens--the new VC mechanism adopts a lightweight moving coil system that reduces the load on the drive system. This allows the drive to be operated with smaller coils and magnets, reducing the weight and size for the entire VC unit.

    Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 reviews

18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III VC Lens for Sony E Mount Cameras (Silver) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from OUTSTANDING LENS FOR SONY NEX 7 I had originally planned to buy the NEX 7 kit, with the Sony lens included. However, I decided to buy the body by itself, and purchase this Tamron lens. I have been very pleased. Even when the images are enlarged to full resolution, color, sharpness, and contrast look great. Additionally, compared to the similary Sony 18-200mm lens, Tamron's is more sveldt and its black color better matches the NEX 7. My only complaint is that the size of the lens causes a shadow on the image when the pop-up flash is used. This will either mandate that you use this lens without flash, or that you purchase the Sony F20AM flash. Otherwise, great lens.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor light focus with Sony A6000 I've had the 18-200 as my only lens for a new A-6000 for about 3 months. I'm disappointed. In any but bright conditions the lens seeks or hunts in autofocus. To achieve focus and shoot, I must either go to manual focus or move the focus select from the shutter to the AEL or other back button so I can de-select autofocus prior to shooting. Sony has released a camera body software upgrade that may partially address this problem in conjunction with a complementary lens upgrade, but Tamron has no corresponding lens upgrade available and while willing to examine the lens under warranty, has no specific fix for the focus difficulty. The lens is, in my opinion, a 4 star or better in high light but drops to unacceptable in low light conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp, versatile, balances the camera. Even the kit lens makes the NEX7 essentially unpocketable, so I use it on a neck strap, and this super zoom is not too heavy or bulky for strap use. The shiny surface matches the camera very well, they look like they were made for each other, which of course they were. The lens feels solid and functions smoothly. It is very sharp. It balances the camera well since the left hand has something substantial to hold on to, but like all (except the pancake) NEX lenses it's size looks a little disproportionate to the camera body. I think it is good value for the money; less expensive than the Sony offerings, with essentially the same specs as the new Sony zoom.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nice superzoom relative to other superzooms, this is probably tops. i've extensively used a nikkor 18-200vrii and tamron 18-200 for sony aps-c slts. this lens is as sharp as the nikon and sharper than the other tamron. what puts it over the top is its great build (metal on plastic, nice zoom ring), tight feel, and the best image stabilization i've seen on a lens. given that nex bodies rely on the lens for stabilization, a superzoom really needs it and this lens has better implementation than either the sony 18-55 kit or the 50 1.8. 1/10th sec handheld zoomed in a decent amount has no blur (unless the subject is moving of course). a little large on a 5n, pretty good proportionally to a 7 (i use both). for the price, its a very good all-in-one solution. great for travel and when you don't want to carry all your lenses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well suited for its purpose I use this product as a sort of catch all lens. I normally shoot prime lenses, but, sometimes need a zoom for practical reasons. Rather than try to guess between the two 18-55 and 55-210 lenses, I wanted one that covered that same basic range. I shoot any subject with this lens.So far, it's a good size. It handles fine. I have no problems using it for hours at a time. The only minor quibbles are that the manual focus ring may be a little more sensitive than I'd like (though with practice I no longer bump it on accident, sending myself into DMF manual focus mode) and the motors are a bit noisier than the regular kit lens.Optically it's as good or better than any other super zoom I've used. It's almost identical to the Sony E 18-200 in most respects with slightly better aberration control. The vibration control seems very effective, almost as if the lens was stuck in mid air.I have nothing particularly bad to say but will point out that this is obviously a super zoom lens and behaves like one. That means you're getting optical quality compromises in order to achieve a small and flexible package. It's heavier than most lenses and you'll need to expect that to impact handling. That said, if you ever used any super zoom from Nikon or even other Tamron lenses, then you can understand what to expect and having the right expectations will leave you satisfied with this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it - Just want I was looking for I wanted a travel lens for my Sony Nex7 as I was tired of changing lenses on the run. The Sony lens that I was considering was too heavy and made my camera clumsy. I found this lens at the Tamron Expo exhibit and returned the following day for a second look. As soon as I held the lens it felt right. After I attended a lecture from a professional photographer that uses the lens with his Nex7 camera I made the decision to buy it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GREAT FOR AIRSHOWS I have a Sony Nex 5N. The 18-55mm lens is good for local photography but not for distant stuff eg events like airshows etc. In these circumstances the 18-200mm lens is great. The wide zoom range makes it easy to locate moving objects with wide angle before zooming in with telephoto. It is portable and powerful. The stabilizer works well and detail / definition of the photos is great. It is a little too big for everyday use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A nice surprise - worth getting Super super nice - do not get a NEX body with a kit the 18-55 mm lens - get this lens. It is slightly longer than the kit lens retractet and it is not that heavy - it is slightly narrower then the Sony silver 70-200 so it suits the body better - it is also in black - it is a nicer lens then the black Sony 70-200 e-mount which is even more money.I compared all 3 lenses - it was a toss between the older silver Sony and the Tamron as far as speed and quality and use - but with the ligher weight and narrower and being black to match my NEX 7 it was a no brainer. It is not fair to compare this allaround 18-200 lens with a prime lens at its focal lenght - but this lens is absolutly close to the best allaround 18-200 out there - all 18-200 have some weaknesses compared to primes and narrower focal lenghts like 24-70 - but this is a good as it gets - Nice build quality and very quiet.adjusting focal lenght is a bit firmer than the Sony but the great advantage over the Sony is that the Tamron has no lens greep lile the Sony has.The vibration control works well and gives you at least a Stop when hand holding in low light. For events now I can unload the full size DSLR with my Nikor 70-200 2.8 for some periods and just use my 2 Sony NEX bodys - NEX 5n with a 16mm 2.8 for group shots etc. and the NEX 7 with the Tamron - even though I do cary with me the Sony 50mm 1.8 for very low light situations - so a varied aperture lens of course cannot compare with a constant 2.8 lens - but when possible there is a great advantage of the small size of a NEX body and a small lens like the Tamron - not just weight but also when taking candit shots - people feel more relaxed with a smaller camera kit verses the full size DSLR body and say the long 70-200mm 2.8 So allaround a superb allaround lens - not to mention for street photography - traveling with a NEX 5/6/7 and this Tamron 70-200 verses a full size DSLR us a drean - safe your back :)It is about $ cheaper then the silver Sony - and much better then the black Sony and less money - I only hope that Tamron come out with more lenses to get the e-mount lenses down in price.Compared to the 18-55 mm Sony kit lens this is just a tad heaver and a tad longer detracted - but what a differense in build quailty and reach and out of focus blur - An absolute must have for your NEX body -
