VuPoint Solutions PDS-ST415-VP-RB overview

  • 1Description

The handheld Magic Wand Portable Scanner (Black) from VuPoint scans documents, photos, newspapers, and virtually any smooth surface onto a microSD card. With a scan area of 8.27 x 25" (or up 98" inches at lower resolutions), the scanner can store any letter or legal size document or image. Take the portable scanner with you to the library and scan what you need for later, no need to waste paper or money on photocopies. When you get home, simply connect the scanner to your computer with the supplied USB cable to transfer your scans. If you scanned a text document, once your file is on the computer, you can use the included OCR (optical character recognition) software to convert any printed material into editable text (Windows only; not compatible with Mac OS).

The scanner runs on 2 AA batteries so you can easily replace them when they run out; no need to carry a charger around with you. Using standard AA batteries, the scanner can perform at least 180 color scans or 200 monochrome scans. The LCD displays the device's status and other important info. The scanner weighs only 6.9 oz (including the batteries) and is only 10 x 1.2 x 1 inches, making it a great way to store documents and photos on the go.

Please note that the Magic Wand requires a microSD card to operate

    VuPoint Solutions PDS-ST415-VP-RB reviews

Magic Wand Portable Scanner (Black) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does an excellent job We use the product to store photos and forms on the computer that we don't need to have a physical copy of. This product is very easy to use and understand. It's actually very difficult to not scan correctly. It stays very much on track and gives good resolution to the end product. Downloading it to the computer is easy and I was able to do it right away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very handy gadget I had my doubts about gadgets like this that tout all kinds of features, but I thought I would take a chance on this one because of reviewers' ratings. I am not disappointed with the performance of this little scanner. It fits into my briefcase (i.e. backpack) perfectly, and I can use it in libraries as well as on my desk with equal facility. I have scanned a dozen documents so far and the batteries still show that they are strong, but I carry a back up pair just in case. I like the ability to adjust the resolution. I have not tried the OCR feature yet, so I can't comment on it. But even if that fails to perform properly, I find that for the price the scanning feature alone is a great deal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truly a magic wand! The VuPoint portable wand scanner produces results even better than I'd dared to hope for, with a choice of resolutions at 300dpi, 600dpi, or 900dpi. The first-time setup is straightforward, and the wand is easy to use for scanning both documents and photographs. I bought three for our team of oral-history interviewers to use in copying photos and other memorabilia when they visit oldtimers in their homes to record their memories of days gone by. There aren't any cords to get in the way, and images are then smoothly downloaded into the USB port on any computer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So close to perfect I am a historian and use the Magic Wand in archives and libraries to scan books and other documents. The portability is great and it saves me from having to leave the table to find a copy machine. And it means I don't have to carry around hundreds of pages of copies. This thing has saved me a lot of time, energy and money (do the math with copies at $.25 per page)! And, the scans are great quality. The only downside is the battery life. This thing EATS batteries! You only get 175-200 scans per set of batteries. For a normal user this would not be an issue, but for someone who scans as much as I do (several hundred pages in a day sometimes) it is a drawback. I have overcome this by using rechargeable batteries that have a fast charge time. Were it not for the battery issue, I would have given the Magic Wand 5 stars without hesitation!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Need help getting started..... First off I agree with one writer that the instructions are way too limited for those new to this scanner. Secondly, every time I try to install the ABBYY Software, I get a message telling me it will UNINSTALL said software if I click on the CONTINUE button. I've been working with computers in/out of the military for over 50 yrs., and I've never heard of any INSTALLATION S/W that UNINSTALLS itself during the INSTALLATION process. If I wanted it UNINSTALLED, Windows has a program that can take care of that!! Additionally, the software should include a SIMPLE program to allow us to copy & display whatever we've scanned with the Magic Wand to our computers. As seen attached, the first two scans I tried were an article fm. the Daytona Beach News-Journal about local bears roaming through neighborhoods north of the world's greatest beach!! Not the greatest contrast, etc., but it gets the job done.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great on small, but poor on large images This scanner does a superb job on documents that fit the scanner width (8.27). It does a terrible job on newspaper articles or documents that extend beyond the scanner width. It took me hours to scan just one newspaper article because I had to scan it in pieces and there is no way to easily join the pieces together. It needs stitching software. The scanner lens should extend all the way to the edge so that it can capture documents in bindings that don't lie flat or that can't be removed from the bindings.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Magic Wand Scanner Review Do not buy this scanner. I will be returning mine. Simple pages from a workbook did not scan crisply. Pictures are better than type. Better to spend your money on a real scanner. Also, directions for converting pictures from Picasa to files is not given. First choose to save in Picasa (with caption), then you have to export file to somewhere on your computer (desktop), then you can attach document to an email. Very cumbersome process. Also, try, try again to make the page straight and clear. Many attempts.
