Sigma 180mm f/2.8 APO Macro EX DG OS HSM Overview

Optimized for close-up work, this Canon EF-mount APO Macro 180mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM from Sigma is a unique medium telephoto lens, also characterized by a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture and apochromatic designation. The optical design employs three FLD elements to virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the focusing range for improved clarity and color rendering. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied for greater contrast when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the optics, this macro lens is also of course distinguished by its 1.5' minimum focusing distance and life-size 1:1 maximum magnification ratio, as well as a floating internal focus design that maintains consistent performance throughout the focusing range. A Hyper Sonic Motor affords quick and quiet autofocus performance while an Optical Stabilizer minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, a removable, rotating tripod collar is included to better support working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 288mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in available light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Ideal for macro shooting, this lens offers a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 1.5' to suit working with close-up subjects.
Apochromatic optical design utilizes three "F" Low Dispersion (FLD) elements to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM), along with an internal focusing design, realizes quick and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range.
Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
A removable, rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
Compatible with optional APO 1.4x EX DG and APO 2x EX DG teleconverters.

Can this lens be used on Canon APS-C (smaller sensor) bodies? If so what would the effective focal length be?
Asked by: Cecil
Yes, it can be used on APS-C sensor cameras. The focal length will not change, the angle of view will be similar to that of a 280mm lens. It will be cropped but the magnification will not change.

question

Lens is 8 long and has a mfd of 18.5 . The sensor to lens mount should be roughly 1.5 . That must leave a working distance of 9 when not using the lens hood. Is something in my calculation off or the working distance is truly 9 ?
Asked by: Ramin
The subject can be no closer than 1.54' from the sensor of the camera.

Hi, I know this lens is optimized for macro. Would there be any drawbacks to shooting other distant subjects, such as birds in flight? I am using the Nikon D850 and D500.
Asked by: Ray
I use a Nikon 200-500 for birds. I bought the Sigma Macro 180 for butterflies, bugs, flowers, etc. But the 200-500 is on my camera so much that I end up trying to use it for butterflies. The 180 is a great macro lens, but I when I have tried to use it for birds, I am always left wanting the 200-500.

This lens is not compatible with the Sony A9; this lens is an A mount battery (for Sony dslr) and the Sony A9 is an E mount camera. It can be used with the Sony adapter: https://bhpho.to/2bxLTPa

Any drawbacks or trade offs in using this lens on an APS-C camera body? Any potential advantages?
Asked by: Cecil
The Sigma 180mm f/2.8 APO Macro EX DG OS HSM Lens (for Canon), B&H # SI18028AMEOC, would be compatible for use on both Canon full-frame cameras and Canon APS-C sensor cameras. Do note that, as with all Canon APS-C sensor cameras, when comparing the angle of view of the lens on a full-frame camera to that of the same lens used on an APS-C sensor camera, there would have a 1.6x crop factor. As such, the Sigma 180mm f/2.8 APO Macro EX DG OS HSM Lens would have the equivalent angle of view of a 288mm lens on the APS-C sensor camera.
