  • 1Description

Decking out the versatile telephoto prime, the Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM Lens with LensCoat Cover and Hoodie Kit from B&H bundles the flexible, long-reaching lens with a protective black LensCoat Lens Cover, black LensCoat Hoodie Lens Hood Cover, and a microfiber cleaning cloth.

  • Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM Lens

Blending a versatile telephoto focal length with a modest form factor, the EF 300mm f/4L IS USM is a long-reaching prime and member of Canon's elite L-series of optics. Two ultra-low dispersion elements are used to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve a high degree of clarity, and a Super Spectra coating has also been applied to maintain contrast and color fidelity when working in difficult lighting conditions. Complementing the imaging attributes, this 300mm f/4 also features an Image Stabilizer to minimize the appearance of camera shake by two stops for sharper handheld shooting. The ring-type USM is employed, too, to deliver quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus control. Additionally, a removable rotating tripod collar is included for stable use of the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Telephoto prime 300mm f/4 lens is compatible with full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs as well as APS-C models where it will provide a 480mm equivalent focal length.
Two ultra-low dispersion (UD) elements greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to two shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. In addition to the single-shot standard IS mode, a second mode is also available that it optimized for panning.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with a rear focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contribute to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Built-in lens hood prevents stray light from causing ghosting or flare and also protects the front element from accidental impacts or scratching.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Canon 300mm f/4.0 reviews

EF 300mm f/4L IS USM Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 254.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Leave The Tripod Collar On I have used on my 5D, 20D and Rebel XT with nice results. Never felt the the need to use a monopod. The Tripod Collar notch is perfect to balance between camera body and lense when hand holding. Used this lens with my rebel XT from the Upper Deck At UT/Neyland stadium & could crop down to see eye expressions during coin toss /8 by 10 photos. Have used shooting at amphitheatre at night. 1/20 second f4 sharp photos possible with image stablizer and firm brace. The focusing/electronics could be better (This lens was realeased in in 1997 I think) Still i give it five stars. Am looking forward to a new version with refined electronics/focusing technology.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I recommend this lens. I own a Canon 300mm f/2.8L is USM but feel that it's too bulky and heavy to carry and shoot in the field without any supports. 300mm f/4 is light and the autofocus is reasonably fast. The images are sharp even the aperture is fully open. The first generation of IS feels a bit older but still helps a lot though. It can also be used as a macro lens because of the 1.5m closest focusing distance. Pros: 1. Lightweight. 2. Good price when comparing the competitors. 3. IS does help. 4. Fast focusing. 5. Sharp images. 6. 4.9 ft. closest Focusing Distance. 7. Built-in lens hood. Cons: 1. A rubber ring is needed for dust and water resistance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding images at 300mm I needed a 300mm telephoto lens for some well-lit indoor and outdoor events. The Canon 300/4 is just fast enough to be able to handle my indoor requirements, and of course works wonderfully outdoors. (Going to f5.6, like on some 70-300 zooms, would be insufficient for my indoor application.) Image stabilization works well; I can see a marked improvement with it turned on when hand-holding the lens. Have used it taking pictures of a border collie; should be great for larger wildlife and zoos. When the focal length is what you need, and when the f4 aperture is sufficient, the image quality is outstanding. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens - Very Glad I Bought It I debated for months over this lens and the f2.8 version which costs four times as much. Rented both lenses, shot with various cameras that I own (20D, 40D, 5D, Mark IIn). I got great results from both lenses. In addition I also used the 1.4 II and 2.0 II extender with this lens and was happy with the results when using the 1.4 II extender. The 2.0 II extender results were good but not great like the 1.4 II extender. This lens is very lightweight and easy to hand hold if need be. I also own a 70 - 200L IS USM and I have to admit, cropped images are much sharper with the EF 300 versus the 70 - 200.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased with my decision! I rented the Canon 300mm f/2.8 IS but decided to buy the f/4 IS instead. The f/2.8 was just too heavy and I was afraid I would have a tendency to leave it at home plus the f/4 focuses much closer than the f/2.8. The f/4 did not disappoint. It is much lighter and I love being able to use the lens for macro photography. The autofocus is a little slower in some situations but well worth the trade-off in reduced weight. Over the years I've rented a number of Canon lens and have found them to be over-priced for what they actually deliver. The Canon 300mm f/4 is the exception. I simply love shooting with this lens!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rock solid Canon workhorse This is my first Canon L series lens purchase. I shoot trains and have been doing so for 9 years now. I was turned onto the Canon L series by a railroad photographer who used to run a photo website. I have had the lens for 2 weeks, and am still in the learning process. For the most part, it turns out great pictures with OUTSTANDING color and backbround blur. My only concern is that I have noticed that some of my photos though are not as RAZOR sharp as pictures shot with less expensive lenses. I have been using the IS feature, and wonder if I dont have something set right?? I am shooting the lens on my EOS 40D body that I purchased in January.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Telephoto Macro Lens I bought this lens because of its close focusing cabability compared to the other 300's available. I have not been disappointed. It has replaced the 180 L Macro for hand holding situations because of its light weight, IS capability, and greater working distance to subjects. Don't get me wrong, my 180 L Macro is still my go to lens for really close up work, but for general field use, this lens is super. And it is a 300 telephoto too. Wish they made a 400 or 500 with the close focusing capability this lens has. Added bonus - MSRP. A real sweet lens, with L quality, at a real sweet price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I may as well weld this to my 5D3 I have owned this lens for eight months and it, together with an EF 1.4x III, stay on my 5D Mark III more than 90% of the time. I absolutely love this lens, and picked it out to get a bit more reach over my EF 200 f/2.8L II (also a superb lens). The autofocus is fast, dead accurate, and the color and contrast are outstanding. With the teleconverter image quality is still excellent. I shoot wildlife, birds large and small, flying and still, turtles, dragonflies, and it handles them all superbly. The detail rendered by this lens is astonishing, and the bokeh is beautifully creamy as you would expect from a lens of this length. The image stabilization works also very well. For the price you can't beat this lens if you want fantastic quality in the 300-400mm range.
