    Sigma 300mm f/2.8 reviews

Telephoto 300mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sigma 300-Sharp and Fast AutoFocus(HSM) High levels of brightness and color saturation. Flare well controlled. Autofocusing very fast and very accurate, even in relatively low light levels, thanks to the speed of the lens (HSM). Sharp and detailed images. This lens gives up very little to the Canon 300L IS USM except Image Stabilization and a much higher MSRP. Tracks fast moving subjects with ease. The Canon 300L IS USM does not focus any faster than the Sigma 300 EX DG HSM. I have used both and currently own several Canon L lenses. The Sigma 300 EX DG HSM works flawlessly with the Canon Extender EF 1.4 II. Ruggedly Built and slightly more compact than the Canon 300L. I use this Sigma with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IIN and a 7D. Great lens and a great value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens and completely reliable I have had this lens for many years. I have used almost every lens in this focal length and this is the one I go to. I have sold my long Canon lenses because I could not see the extra expense when the Sigma does everything I ask of it. I shoot sports, wildlife, action, astrophotography, and most anything else, and this lens has never let me down. It is sharp, and excellent contrast. Every once in a while it will miss focus, but so did my Canons. A big plus is how compact this lens is. It is easy to store in a bag or a small case. I also like the finish. It less attention grabbing then the look at me Canons, and it is far less likely to show bumps and abrasions than the white Canon finish. Save your money, buy the Sigma.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Sleeper Lens of the 300mm f2.8 kind. I shoot from motorsports to high school football and I knew that I was going to have to eventually invest in a 300mm 2.8 to be able to take on more projects but I did not want to go broke making a lens purchase. What I find great about the lens is that it is affordable, and it appears to be somewhat more compact than other 300mm f2.8 that are on the market. The Sigma 300mm f2.8 has a fast focus and reasonably priced and the color(Black) allows me to blend in with the activities on the sideline. The only thing that was not great about the lens is that it is not readily available and it had to be ordered online I could not just walk into the store and purchase the lens my only complaint, however the staff @ B & H fixed that as well, the lens was ordered on a Friday and I received it bright and early on a saturday morning(very next day) just in time for my next event.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fast * Sharp * BUT... At about half the price of the Canon EOS 300 f/2.8 this lens in 100% worth the money. I have used mine for high school, college and professional sports as well as news and events with my Canon 1D. I like that just like my Canon lenses this lens features full time manual focus. Nice for sports when your trying to focus on an area when there isn't a subject there (yet). I love using it with the sigma 1.4x converter! Images are just as sharp as without and the focus is just as fast. Problems Encountered: There are two things that remind me that this is NOT a Canon. (other than it is black)First, and most annoying, is the lack of a focus limit switch. Without this when the lens jumps focus... GONE! The lens racks all the way trying to find the subject again. Second, the tripod (monopod) mount and bracket are really stiff and yet loose? the camera and lens don't rotate very smoothly when the lock nob is released and when the lock knob is locked the lens will still turn... Go figure? This is particularly annoying when you have mounted the camera for remote shooting in the vertical position and the weight of the battery slowly rotates the camera and lens. Previous Equivalent Items Owned: Nikon 300 f/2.8 Canon 400 f/2.8 Items I Recommend: White gaffers tape. Tape over the black to keep lens cooler in the sun

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rivals Canon's 300mm I mainly use the Sigma 300mm lens for sports and wildlife shoots, although the bokeh makes it nice for tight portraiture shots as well. The quality rivals that of it's Canon counterpart at nearly half the investment which makes it very attractive to the budget-conscience photographer like myself. The one thing I'm not a huge fan of is the filter assembly at the rear of the lens. I have had my filter cartridge fall out multiple times for no apparent reason.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing for my uses Bought this mostly for night field sports (baseball, football, etc) and was disappointed with the lens. The same / similar issues others have noted. The focus was sometimes off (front focused) or just too slow to get the shot. I also had a problem with the lens rotating within the tripod lock ring -- after tightening the lock ring the lens tends to drift slightly. Sort of frustrating but tollerable. I shot a night baseball game at a stadium with the Sigma a week after renting the Canon 300/2.8 to shoot a game in the same stadium so I was able to compare the results from the two lenses. While Some of my images were off with the Canon the ratio was about what I'd expect from a night game but I had far fewer keepers with the Sigma. Its frustrating to lose shots to shoddy equipment. I have returned the Sigma. This lens would probably be ok for more stationary uses but that is not what I need it for. There is no doubt that I'll save up and buy the canon. On the plus side, the soft case is easier to carry than Canon's hard case.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good bang for your buck.. Got mine and it was very front focus on the 40d and 1D Mark III. Sent just the lens to Sigma now a +20 is required on Mark III but images as very sharp, i am pleased. AF is slow(er) that a EF 70-200 2.8 L USM but this is not a problem with correct setting on MK3 i can work around this. I have both the sigma and canon 1.4x and i think this works better with the sigma 1.4x. There is no loss in AF speed and IQ is great as a 420mm F/4 lens. I would have given it 5 start but chances are the copy you get might be front focus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Qualiry Lens I photograph wildlife primarly. The 2.8 F stops really has impproved the clarity of my photos and ability to shoot in liwer light circumstances.
