Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Overview

A highly desirable focal length for portraiture, the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G from Nikon is a short-telephoto prime featuring a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. This design finds balance between a lightweight, compact form factor while also being fast enough to effectively control depth of field and suit working in low light. Individual lens elements feature a Super Integrated Coating, which controls flare and ghosting to produce greater contrast and color fidelity when working in bright and backlit conditions. Additionally, the Silent Wave Motor affords fast and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Short-telephoto prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 127.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture helps to achieve shallow depth of field imagery and also benefits working in low-light conditions.
Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Does this lens focus to infinity? I’m considering it as my fast glass for sports. Does it let in enough light to be handheld at a night baseball or football game?
Asked by: Silas
I would recommend something longer than 85 for sports. Anything with a low aperture would be great for night time. I would recommend the 70-200 f/2.8 but that is a more expensive lens, for great reason.

Does this lens work with the Nikon d7000?
Asked by: Landon
Yes. While this lens is optimized for FX (full frame sensor) Nikon DSLR camera bodies, it will also work on DX (APS-C sensor) Nikon DSLRs, such as the D7000, D7200, D7500, D5600, and others. Nikon FX and DX DSLRs and lenses share the same F-mount. In general, FX lenses will work on DX cameras.

Using the FTZ adapter on the Z6, would this perform similar to a 105mm for macro work?
Asked by: Claudia
The minimum focusing distance of this lens is 2.62 feet, which is well above a macro lens such as the Nikon AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens at a 1 ft focusing distance. Unfortunately, the FTZ adapter would not shorten the focusing distance of any lens placed on it.
