Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Overview

A highly desirable focal length for portraiture, the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G from Nikon is a short-telephoto prime featuring a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. This design finds balance between a lightweight, compact form factor while also being fast enough to effectively control depth of field and suit working in low light. Individual lens elements feature a Super Integrated Coating, which controls flare and ghosting to produce greater contrast and color fidelity when working in bright and backlit conditions. Additionally, the Silent Wave Motor affords fast and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Short-telephoto prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 127.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture helps to achieve shallow depth of field imagery and also benefits working in low-light conditions.
Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Bought this as a gift for my daughter, she's getting into photography and needed a solid lens for general purpose and portrait use.. using our old, reliable Nikon D40.. so far, she's taking great photos, is it the lens or is it her talent? Time will tell, I suppose.

The portrait lens with excellent bokeh

With it's f/1.8 capability, this lens supplies excellent bokeh for your portrait work. Focus is fast enough for me....lens locks in a little tight IMO but not a concern. This Nikkor uses 62mm filters that are used in many of my other lens. Using it with the D750. The only negative might be it's limited close up focus ability...rated at .8M/30 but that isn't it's intended primary use. 1 year warranty. China manufacture.

This lens, is light and FAST, High quality optics of a fixed portrait lens and it's affordable. I've found it really great for low-light photography and the shallow depth of field really helps isolate subjects from the background, Fuzzy backround highlights are COOL and totally isolate your subject. I'm really happy with this lens!

Save money and buy this lens

You will keep this lens forever, trust me. Do not spend a lot of money on a 24-70 2.8 lens. I bought both lens at the end of that spectrum (the 24 and this one), both 1.8 instead, and my portraits and wedding pictures are STUNNING. Plus I saved a lot of money. This 85mm is all I use unless I need a wide open lens. Otherwise, this is the only lens I use on my D780 for events and outdoor portraits. Bokeh is AMAZING.

This is the Lens for Professional Portraiture. Razor sharp portraits with stunningly gorgeous background bokeh at wide apertures. Fast enough for general photography even in low light situations, indoors or outdoors.

This lens is a dreamy creamy for shooting the head shot/portrait or the small indoor sport and games. It's fast and having more wiggled-room for outdoor portrait. I am very happy to this lens in my camera bag. With its price that wasn't outrageously broken your pocket I highly recommend to get this lens and pairing with a 50mm, you're having yourself a happy shooting family of lenses !

I Am Embarrassed I Did Not Expect This

By Ken

I purchased this lens because it was much lighter than my other options in this focal length range. I have many beautiful optics: Sig 50mm 1.4 art, Tam sp35mm 1.4, the latest version Tam sp90mm 2.8 and many more to B&H's profit. And to be sure I have enjoyed owning these optics as well as the excellent experience of doing business with B&H.( I mean that ) More importantly, I am serious about creating images. When it's time to pick up the gear and to go out to shooting it helps when you can carry the equipment. (without an attendant hernia ) So I expected OK optical results from this plastic feather. But, I was blown away by just how crazy good this lens truly is. Ok I'm an f5.6-f7.1 scenic shooter. Not fair since most of you will be say f2.0 to f4.0 portrait shooters. So, to be fair, I ran a bunch of tripod mounted studio lit tests between 4ft to 8ft and from f1.8 to f4.0. Once again I am blown away. Not so fond of f.8, but all the fest from f2.2 on is truly excellent. Really! Color, contrast and oh yes yes sharpness. So I can say that if you are still shooting DSLR say 24 to 36 mega pixel FX or 20 to 24 mega pixel DX ( bodies used for these tests )then I can only give a strong thumbs up to this device for anyone contemplating its purchase. Also, right now, switching my systems to mirror-less would not get me anywhere in real world results. But even if one does make the change and they would prefer all Z lenses then this one did not break the bank and will produce like crazy for you for as long as you choose to use it.

question

What is the significant difference between this lens and the 85mm f/1.8daf; 1931 lens
Asked by: Anonymous
The AF-S 85mm 1.8G lens doesnt have an aperture ring (as it is a G lens). It is also an AF-S lens (meaning it has a built-in motor for focus) which typically makes the autofocus on the lens quicker. Also the AF-S G version of the lens has a special coating and extra elements, compared to the AF D counterpart, which increases the image quality of the lens. And it has rounded aperture blades, which lends toward more pleasing bokeh.

What does the .12 magnification factor calculate? ...

What does the .12 magnification factor calculate? How is it measured?
Asked by: Richard
I am fairly sure that this represents the size of the image in the viewfinder or final image vs the actual image size. So if an image is 10" high, the largest it will be in the digital images is 1.2" You might want to verify this, but I think this is it. You might compare it to a macro lens where the magnification factor might be 1:1...so if you are photographing a ring, the size in the digital image would be the actual size of the ring.
