Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Overview

  • 1Description

A highly desirable focal length for portraiture, the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G from Nikon is a short-telephoto prime featuring a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. This design finds balance between a lightweight, compact form factor while also being fast enough to effectively control depth of field and suit working in low light. Individual lens elements feature a Super Integrated Coating, which controls flare and ghosting to produce greater contrast and color fidelity when working in bright and backlit conditions. Additionally, the Silent Wave Motor affords fast and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Short-telephoto prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 127.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture helps to achieve shallow depth of field imagery and also benefits working in low-light conditions.
Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

    Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Reviews

    AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 601.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Bang for the Buck For it's price, this lens delivers on so many levels. Its constructed well, yet its not too heavy and cumbersome. Auto focus is quick and accurate. No AF adjustment was needed on my copy, even wide open. The lens has not flaws that I can tell even when shooting wide open (though in some situations I did get some CA at 1.8). It is tack sharp at wide open. Bokeh is creamy and dreamy. The 1.4 is creamier and dreamier... but the performance between the two is so unbelievably close that its hard to justify the extra thousand dollars or so just to get 2/3 additional stops of light and a creamier and shallower depth of field.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Investment in Beauty Last spring, I decided that I wanted to get off my iPhone, take better photographs and actually learn how my camera works. Currently, I'm taking a photojournalism class and have begun working on a photographic portrait series. So far, I'm heavily considering the Nikon D500. In the meantime, I'm investing in some prime lenses. This 85mm lens renders beautiful photographs on my old D40X. I can't wait to see how it performs on a newer Nikon DSLR. B & H offers exceptional customer service. The reps are so knowledgeable, as they are instrumental in helping one make the right gear decisions with confidence. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic must-have I finally bought this to have an easy to pack medium-tele lens to compliment the Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 that I use every day. I shoot a lot of indoor presentations and formal events where this bright 85mm comes in very handy. It is a sharp lens. Not razor sharp as some reviewers say, but very sharp with the ability to resolve really pleasing levels of detail even at f/2. The images are sharp across the entire field with both DX and FX sensor cameras. It makes for a nice bright viewfinder and the autofocus is quick and accurate. I'm also using it for casual outdoor and formal studio portraits and like the way the pictures look. A classic, must-have, very good quality lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sharp, Affordable, but no VR It's hard to say anything negative about this lens because by all accounts it's a very sharp and mostly affordable lens though the lens that it's replacing, the 85mm 1.8D lens was no slouch either. I mostly upgraded because I wanted a more pleasing bokeh and am happy. A couple of negative things however: for the life of me I can't understand why the absolute cheapest lens that Nikon has, the 18-55mm kit lens comes with built-in vibration reduction and neither this lens or the 1.4 version don't. It would be very handy. Another negative thing is that the focusing speed is rather slow and even slower than the screwdriver version.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Terrific lens The optics are sharp, sharp, and sharp. The bokeh as you can see is gorgeous. I've used this lens for a variety of tasks, portraits, scenics, in and out of the studio and it has proven reliable. I have not yet exposed it to serious inclement weather, so I won't comment on that.. The lens does fail to auto focus at times, but you'll quickly learn when it will potentially happen and you can over ride the autofocus quickly. Additionally, for $ the build quality could be better. It's plastic, thus light, and consequently does not feel terribly durable. Lastly it's auto focus is acceptable, but not fast. Forget using it for sports.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great portrait Lens This a bargain lens that is very close to the 85MM 1.4 in bokeh. This is not a fast focusing lens, so this is not for shooting professional sports, but you get beautiful portraits with it. Please check out the photozone review of it, and proceed to purchase. This is classic focal length on FF, and you can also shoot it on DX (127.5mm 35mm eq). I am very happy with the sharpness of the lens. Please do AF fine tune if you notice the liveview focus differs from regular focus. The focus band at 1.8 is razor thin and you want to make sure that your camera is not back or front focusing. To know how to do that check out the article on the D800E in luminous-landscape.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This lens blows me away I was a bit skeptical that I wouldn't use this lens that much given it's focal length. But recent I started doing in studio fashion/beauty shots and I have to say, the images I get with this lens and my D750 are just unbelievably sharp, almost to a fault (not really), but yes, with some people post processing is necessary to dull things down a bit. This lens has quickly risen to the top of the list of my go-to lens. When I bought it I was nagged by thinking I need to spend 3X more for the 1.4 - nah. I can't image there could be that much difference between the two. I love this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Fast Medium Telephoto Although I have at least three other Nikkor lenses that cover 85mm (classic 85mm manual focus f/2, 24-120mm f/4, and AF-S 80-400mm G) the f/1.8 provides a large aperture and very fine Bokeh for selective focus work. Very good resolution wide open, even the corners, and excellent resolution corner to corner from f/2.8 until diffraction softening starts at about f/11. And this lens has virtually no distortion. Optical performance and mechanical feel are excellent -- manual focusing is precise with no play in the focus ring, and auto-focus is very fast on a D800e.Definitely a 'must' prime lens for any photographer wanting an excellent short-medium telephoto.

Have any of you used this lens for low-light photography or concert photography? If so, how did it perform? Thanks.
    Asked by: Doug
The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens has a wide f/1.8 aperture. So it is good in low light. As long as you are close enough to the stage it is good for concert photography.

    question

Does anyone regret not going with the 1.4? I already own the holy trinity and am looking for a high quality 85mm to add to my arsenal.
    Asked by: Benjamin H.
That would come down to personal preference. Both lenses are excellent options and have similar performance. The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G lens is slightly sharper and brighter, while the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G has slightly better chromatic aberration performance. Otherwise, the optical quality of the lenses are basically equal regarding distortion and vignetting.

I'm pretty sure this will fit on the Nikon F5 35mm... Can someone confirm for me? Thanks!
    Asked by: Ben H.
It works on my F100 so there's no reason it shouldn't work on the F5. It's a great lens BTW.
