Each tool contained within the Wave+ is suitable for multiple tasks, making this an incredibly flexible addition to any professional tool kit. Flipping open the multi-tool reveals a pair of spring-assisted needle-nose pliers that can also accommodate the tasks that would normally require a set of standard pliers; they also sport handy wire cutters at the crook. Each arm holds an array of tools that lock into place for safe operation. One handle carries medium flathead and Phillips screwdrivers, while the other holds a combination bottle/can opener with an integrated wire stripper, a serrated knife, and a wood/metal file that terminates in a small flathead driver. The file is also etched in order to double as a convenient 1.5" ruler. When closed, a 2.6" and a straight blade of the same length are easily accessed. Both the straight blade and its small serrated counterpart are machined from 420HC stainless steel.

Leatherman multi-tools are great, but build quality has declined significantly over the years. They simply are not as solid. And why so many varieties? Why?

This replaced by ancient, original Leatherman which is still fine, except the tip of the knife blade snapped off. Good features of this new model = the knife and one other blade can be opened without opening the entire unit; both of these blades lock open = much safer; there is a small catch to keep the pliers open. On the downside, tools other than the knives are harder to open than on the original Leatherman.
