Polaroid PLFILFDND77 overview

  • 1Description

The Polaroid 77mm Neutral Density Fader Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing a reduction of about 1.3 to 8.6 stops. The ND 3x to ND 400x density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, allowing you to previsualize the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to dial in differing amounts of density scene to scene.

Polaroid PLFILFDND77 reviews

77mm Neutral Density Fader Filter is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 44.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from linited uses For the price I wasn't expecting a amazing filter with this in mind I was still dissappinted, for still photography if you are after long day time exposures such as smooth water effects it is completely useless, the filter has horrible uneven exposures and over exposed and underexposed in different blotches and also has a strong color cast, the only use is to gain a few stops control while shooting video wide open, don't expect to be using this nd filter at its larger nd settings

Rated 4 out of 5 by from best value for the buck It does what it is expected to do. Blocks brilliantly the light, but... when I was using it on my Rokinon 35mm T1.5, it seams like if I was trying to block a huge amount of light (somewhere between 6 to 8 stops of light) the ND Fader would appear to slightly have a vignette coming from left and right, but not from the top or bottom... just a loooong degrade from the left and right edges to the inside. So, I tried to keep it under 6 stops of light blockage. But it's worth the price. Also, even being 77mm, the actual size of the ring on the outside it's more like a 79mm so it's impossible to put a cap on the lens with this ND fader on it. Tha'ts kind of a bummer, to always take it out, and put it back on, every time you want to use the ND fader... Not the perfect scenario, but I learned to live with it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible I bought this ND Filter for rushing water and for moving clouds. I tried it out yesterday on the clouds. It was a perfect day. The spring clouds were streaming pretty quickly over an old barn in a Kansas prairie. I wanted to show the movement of the clouds over the barn and green field. The ND filter was an absolute failure. The effect was very inconsistent. No matter how hard I tried to even out the effect of the filter, there were underexposed spots/blobs - or overexposed spots/blobs. I would highly recommend not purchasing this item. It's nearly impossible to get an even exposure with this. If you're a stickler for quality, like I am, then DO NOT purchase this item. Spend the extra money on something good because this is a waste of money for sure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from works well Seems to work well with out careful evaluation. I have not tested, or looked closely enough to say if it gives of a slight amount of purple or not, but I can say that this ND filter works great for everything I am doing. I mostly use it for doing video out side on my DSLR. It helps me keep a fast aperture, with out increasing the shutter speed, which gives me nice smooth footage with great depth of field in bright light. The only thing I done like about using this filter is that I can not fit my lens hood on while using it because it is wider than the opening of the lens hood. Otherwise, it works great for me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a good choice I wanted to use a dark ND filter to slow down exposures during the day, such as coastal shots with misty water and so on. I thought this may do the trick. Unfortunately it does not give an even darkening and so the center of the image will be the correct exposure and the edges will be overexposed. Or the other way around if you turn the fader a little more. I would not recommend and would strongly encourage people to buy a single (non-adjustable) ND filter to get the job done.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Economical Choice I bought this ND Filter recently and have been extremely happy with it.I shoot all the video and photography for our company and am shooting on a 5D MarkII for both. The ND works as advertised. I prefer to shoot wide open as often as possible and when trying to keep the shutter at 1/50th on a bright sunny day, it is impossible without some ND. Even on a full sunny day you'll have plenty of ND to compensate for the sun with this filter. This filter is an economical approach if you don't want to spend the money on a full matte box and filter set.The only thing I notice that is negative is that I see a slight softness to the edges when used. But its a slight drawback to a huge gain so I wouldn't consider this a deal breaker in any way. Here is a sample of a video I did were the filter was used for everything except the interior shots. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Vdg20XroREMAlso, for example, when I am using my 24-70mm, I have to attach the filter before I attach the lens hood because the filter is wider than the opening of the hood. Again, small inconvenience for a big gain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the photos I get with this!!! This filter is one of the most creative filters I have ever owned. At its maximum setting, I can shoot a 1 minute exposure in bright sunlight without overexposing any highlights. Anything moving through the scene either disappears (people) in the final image or has a beautiful, soft motion blur (flags). Super easy to use, just set it to minimum to get your focus, twist to maximum, and expose!!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cheap Glass = Lower Quality I used this ND filter for both photo and video purposes on professional DSLR cameras and I was not impressed. The filter made images and video soft. There was also a bit of discoloration and a lot of inconsistent shades that were particularity noticeable with camera moves. This is okay for soccer mom's photographing soccer games, but I would not recommend this to anyone doing work professionally. When it comes to camera gear you typically get what you pay for. Good glass is always expensive, but it's worth the quality.
